The influence of sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) voltage switching frequency and fundamental frequency on the endurance (lifetime) of polyimide film were investigated. Endurance tests at SPWM voltages with switching frequency from 6 similar to 18 kHz and fundamental frequency from 10 similar to 200 Hz were carried out on polyimide film insulation keeping the peak to peak voltage and rise & fall time of the square wave voltage at 3 kV and 260 ns, respectively. Experimental results show that, the endurance of polyimide decrease with increasing switching frequency and tends to increase with fundamental frequency at the SPWM with the same switching frequencies. When assessing the lifetime of insulation systems of inverter-fed motors by the endurance obtained at repetitive square wave voltage with 50% duty cycles, the above influence should be considered.

This work reports a Class-E pulse-width modulated RF power amplifier that uses multilevel discrete supply modulation for base station applications. This work quantifies the efficiency roll-off in multilevel PAs and proposes that pulse-width modulated (PWM) class-E PAs offer the best efficiency roll-off and dynamic range, based on the efficiency profile with power back-off (PBO). The presented technique significantly extends the PBO dynamic range of PWM PAs over prior state-of-the-art solutions. A proof of concept watt-level class-E PA is designed using a GaN HEMT and exhibits more than 65% efficiency at 15dB PBO. This design extends the dynamic range of a PWM class-E PA to more than 6dB for a 50 to 30 percent duty cycle variation, and offers an efficiency roll-off of less than 4% per dB. The proposed circuit demonstrates an increasing average drain efficiency with power back-off when reducing the PA supply voltage.

Fault tolerant control of electronically coupled distributed energy resources in microgrid systems

This paper proposes a sensor fault tolerant control (FTC) strategy for electronically-coupled distributed energy resource (DER) units in grid-connected microgrid systems. First, a fault dependent dynamical model of the DER unit incorporating sensor faults is proposed. The FTC strategy is then developed using a sliding mode observer (SMO) which has an inherent robustness property. The rational for using a SMO is the need to detect and reconstruct any fault that may occur in output measurements of the system as a result of sensor failure. The fault signals are reconstructed by using a robust approach that encompasses uncertainties in the system, such as frequency variation. This paper also represents the cyber attack as an unknown sensor fault, and consequently the DER current sensor measurements manipulated by a data integrity attack can be detected and reconstructed. The reconstructed fault signals are then used to modify the faulty sensor measurements, which are fed to the voltage source converter (VSC) controller. This ensures accurate generation of pulse width modulation (PWM) signals and consequently accurate tracking of real and reactive power references. Different case studies are tested on a detailed nonlinear model of the DER system. The impact of faults on the DER performance and the effectiveness of the proposed FTC scheme are evaluated through extensive simulation studies. Harmonic Issues Assessment on PWM VSC-Based Controlled Microgrids Using Newton Methods

This paper presents the application of Newton-based methods in the time-domain for the computation of the periodic steady state solutions of microgrids with multiple distributed generation units, harmonic stability, and power quality analysis. Explicit representation of the commutation process of the power electronic converters and closed-loop power management strategies are fully considered. Case studies under different operating scenarios are presented: grid-connected mode, islanded mode, variations in the Thevenin equivalent of the grid and the loads. Besides, the close relation between the harmonic distortion, steady state performance of the control systems, asymptotic stability, and power quality is analyzed in order to evaluate the importance and necessity of using full models in stressed and harmonic distorted scenarios.

This paper introduces and generalizes a class of multilevel dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) for voltage sags/swells compensation of high-power sensitive loads. Such a device can improve the power quality of sensitive loads located in stiff systems. The proposed DVR is based on three-phase bridge converters series-connected by means of cascaded transformers using the concept of open-end winding (OEW). Hence, two dc-links can provide either symmetrical (i.e., equal dc-link voltages) or asymmetrical (i.e., different dc-link voltages) operation of the DVR converters. A generalization for K-stages is presented as well. The proposed configuration is named DVR-cascaded open-end winding (COEW). Such a topology permits a generation of a maximized number of voltage levels per converter leg. An alternative solution with multiple dc-links (i.e., multiple dc sources), named DVR-MSCOEW, is briefly introduced. The multilevel waveforms at the output voltages of the converter are generated by using a suitable pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy associated with both dc-link voltage and transformers turns ratios. In the scenario, where common mode currents (CMC) for DVR-COEW are introduced, and if such currents are significant, a modified PWM strategy is described to compensate for CMC issues. Since it uses two-level cells, the modularity feature makes the proposed DVR-COEW an attractive solution compared with some conventional configurations. Modeling and PWM control are addressed in this paper. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

An analog method of cross-talk compensation for a RGB wavelength division multiplexed optical link

pulse-width modulation (PWM) over optical fiber can be a very advantageous data transmission approach when an electrically isolated data link is required. The use of wavelength division multiplexing allows multiple data streams to be sent through a single fiber independently. The present investigation aims to demonstrate a novel approach to reduce cross-talk in a three-channel RGB optical link without the need for complex optical componentry. An op-amp circuit is developed to reduce the cross-talk so that the resolution of the PWM data is preserved. An iterative Monte-Carlo simulation approach is used to optimize the op-amp circuit. The approach is developed for a set of three PWM Hall effect magnetometers with 12-bit resolution and 128 Hz sampling rate. We show that, in these conditions, the loss of resolution due to cross-talk is prevented. We also show that the cross-talk compensation allows the RGB PWM link to outperform other transmission schemes. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Grid-forming control for power converters based on matching of synchronous machines

We consider the problem of grid-forming control of power converters in low-inertia power systems. Starting from an average-switch three-phase power converter model, we draw parallels to a synchronous machine (SM) model and propose a novel converter control strategy which dwells upon the main characteristic of a SM: the presence of an internal rotating magnetic field. In particular, we augment the converter system with a virtual oscillator whose frequency is driven by the DC-side voltage measurement and which sets the converter pulse-width-modulation signal, thereby achieving exact matching between the converter in closed-loop and the SM dynamics. We then provide a sufficient condition asserting existence, uniqueness, and global asymptotic stability of a shifted equilibrium, all in a rotating coordinate frame attached to the virtual oscillator angle. By actuating the DC-side input of the converter we are able to enforce this condition and provide additional inertia and damping. In this framework, we illustrate strict incremental passivity, droop, and power-sharing properties which are compatible with conventional power system operation requirements. We subsequently adopt disturbance-decoupling and droop techniques to design additional control loops that regulate the DC-side voltage, as well as AC-side frequency and amplitude, while in the end evaluating them with numerical experiments. Highly digital 1 GS/s 7-bit PWM ADC in 65 nm CMOS using time-domain quantisation

A 2 x time-interleaved 1 GS/s 7b ADC is presented, which uses pulsewidth modulation and time domain quantisation for digitisation and is designed for wide channel bandwidths available at mm-wave frequencies. The area, resolution and power performance of the highly digital time-domain architecture is likely to scale with technology. The prototype ADC achieves 5.24 ENOB at a Nyquist rate while consuming 5.22 mW of power, resulting in a FOMWalden,nyq = 138.13 fJ/conversion step in TSMC's 65 nm GP CMOS process.
