This paper explorers modulation strategies for diode-assisted buck-boost voltage source inverter and the relationship of voltage transfer ratio versus modulation index. Two kinds of improved pulse-width modulation strategies with high dc link voltage utilization are presented to obtain maximum voltage gain at given modulation index and minimize the voltage stress at the same time. The operation principle and realization of the proposed modulation strategies, the relationship of voltage gain versus modulation index and voltage stress versus voltage gain are analyzed in details. Simulation results are given to verify the theoretical analysis and demonstrate good performance of the improved pulse width modulation strategies.

Charging and discharging model of lithium-ion battery for charge equalization control using particle swarm optimization algorithm

This study presents a charging and discharging controller of a lithium-ion battery for charge equalization control of a battery storage system using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The charge equalization controller is designed using a bidirectional flyback DC-DC converter for exchanging the amount of energy from a battery series stack to an overdischarged cell to be charged and vice versa. The constant current-constant voltage charge proportional-integral (PI) control and discontinuous current mode control are applied to charge and discharge the lithium-ion battery on a flyback converter operation. This proposed system utilizes the PSO algorithm to optimize the values of the PI controller parameters. Optimization results produce the ideal values of the PI controller parameters with minimum error indices, thereby regulating the pulse-width modulation to the MOSFET switching drive of the flyback converter and upgrading the battery charge performance for charge equalization. The PSO algorithmic approach-based developed system is proven to be robust and competent for high-tech storage systems toward the advancement of sustainable electric vehicle technologies and renewable source of applications. Estimation of peak transient voltages at wind turbine generator terminals

This paper proposes equivalent circuits and a method for the estimation of the peak transient voltages at generator terminals in wind turbines equipped with back-to-back converters. Equivalent circuits as well as a way of phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground voltages estimation in back-to-back converter are presented. Proposed theoretical background is well confirmed by small-scale measurements. It is shown and proven that phase-to-ground voltages represent a dominating threat for the wind turbine generators insulation. Copyright (c) 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In sine-triangle (ST) pulse width modulation (PWM), the carrier frequency is chosen to be an odd-triplen multiple (e.g., 3, 9, 15... etc.) of the modulating signal frequency in order to maintain the three-phase symmetry among the three pole voltages. However, for ST PWM with non-triplen pulse numbers (e.g., 5, 7, 11... etc.), the three-phase symmetry is not maintained. This paper studies the influence of three-phase symmetry on the line current and torque harmonics in a motor drive, considering pulse numbers of 5, 7 and 9. Absence of three-phase symmetry is shown to result in balanced third harmonic/triplen frequency components in the three-phase line currents. These triplen frequency components interact with the fundamental flux to produce even torque harmonics of order other than multiples of 6. It is predicted that a pulse number of 5 would lead to significant torque harmonics of order 2 and 8, and that a pulse number of 7 would lead to 4th and 10th harmonics torques. Those theoretical predictions are confirmed by simulations and experimental results on a 3.7 kW induction motor drives.

An Analysis Approach for the Assessment of pulse-width Modulated Carrier Frequency Spectral Components in Power Distribution Systems with Photovoltaic Resources

Power distribution systems may have photovoltaic resources, and these resources may interface with the AC system via pulse-width modulated inverters. The pulse-width modulated currents have high-frequency spectra due to the switching frequency, which is typically 2.0-20kHz. These carrier frequency components are asynchronous to the power frequency (the baseband, which is 50 or 60Hz). Residential photovoltaic resources are in the 2-5 kW range, and utility-scale photovoltaic resources may be in the range of 500 kW. The pulse-width modulated carrier frequency components of voltage and current propagate in the power distribution system, and the details of this propagation are described. Note that the pulse-width modulated voltages are not harmonics of the 60-Hz baseband frequency, nor are the several pulse-width modulated voltages generally synchronous with each other. The objective is to describe an analytical approach for the assessment of carrier frequency spectra in distribution systems with photovoltaic resources. Analysis tools and experience with those tools are given. Information is given to distribution engineers faced with systems with pulse-width modulated inverter resources and advice on frequency ranges of study, potential modeling inaccuracies, and software tools. The results of a study on an actual high penetration solar photovoltaic feeder are given.

Stability analysis of digitally controlled LCL-type grid-connected inverter considering the delay effect

Owing to LCL-filter resonance, a single loop may not be adequate to stabilise the digitally controlled LCL-type grid-connected inverter, thus the capacitor-current-feedback active damping is usually introduced. However, the computation and pulse-width modulation delays of the digitally controlled system significantly affect system stability and damping performance. Moreover, the delay varies when the duty-ratio update instant and sampling instant are changed. In this study, the Nyquist diagram is used to investigate the system stability taking into consideration the delay effect in the continuous domain. Then, the general conclusions and formulas can be drawn: if the LCL-filter resonance is above the critical frequency, the Nyquist diagram of single loop may not encircle the critical point, and therefore stabilise the system;and if it is below, a damping strategy is required. However, given the delay effect, the active damping loop may be unstable, and two unstable open-loop poles will be generated in the grid current loop under certain conditions. Then its Nyquist diagram should encircle the critical point to ensure the system is stable. Furthermore, the restriction of the cross-over frequency discussed. Experimental results based on a 5 kW prototype have been provided to verify the theoretical analysis.

Analytical circuit oriented modelling and performance assessment of modular multilevel converter

This study presents a detailed time domain model of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) to provide an alternative form of evaluation of the converter dynamic performance, for example, during AC or DC fault conditions. The purpose of the model is to accurately reflect the converter behaviour to be used in control systems design. It can also be beneficial to predict the steady state or transient state of the converter with fixed or variable inputs. In an MMC, the capacitor voltages are modulated using pulse-width modulation (PWM) to fabricate a sinusoidal output voltage. With time, and because of the PWM action, the capacitors get charged or discharged. Therefore the circuit behaves as a time-variant circuit. The analysis is based on the equivalent circuit derived from the converter differential expressions at any time instant in a piecewise fashion. The usefulness and accuracy of the theoretical study is validated for the three-phase MMC topology by simulation results with respect to normal operation, start-up process, cell short-circuit fault, line-to-ground and DC-side fault conditions. Experimental tests are carried out through a scaled-down laboratory prototype.

An Operating Condition-Based Scheme to Alternate Between Control Strategies for Improved Steady-State and Transient Behavior

The control strategies that use modulation techniques have great acceptance in the current control of static power converters. Indeed, they offer a wide variety of alternatives to address the steady-state characteristics required by the system. Nevertheless, its computation and modulation delay negatively affects its dynamic performance. In order to improve the time response of the system, the modulator is avoided and the strategies of direct choice of the switching state have been presented. They can provide a very fast dynamic response;however, the absence of switching state sequences makes more complex the task of establishing specific switching features for improved steady-state performance. In this work, a control scheme that selects a specific control strategy according to the operating condition of the system is proposed. This allows using modulators to satisfy the switching characteristics required in steady-state and avoids its use when a rapid dynamic response is required. In addition, a soft transition method between the control strategies is presented to prevent unwanted behaviors when these are alternated. The proposed control scheme allows simplifying the design and keeps the main advantages of each selected strategy. To validate the scheme, experimental results are obtained for a control structure that alternates between a finite set model predictive control (direct type for rapid dynamic response) and a proportional integral (PI) control with sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) (modulated type for high steady-state performance).

The modelling of sliding mode (SM) based controlled DC-DC buck-boost converter operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM) with pulse-width modulation (PWM) based is represented in this paper. The model is simulated by Matlab/Simulink software package. The system is modelled and the SM equations for the PWM implementation are illustrated. The performances of the system are tested for the static and dynamic performance is investigated. The simulation results show good and accepted values for voltage regulation which makes the model suitable for common DC-DC conversion purposes.
