Single-Carrier Phase-Disposition PWM Implementation for Multilevel Flying Capacitor Converters

This letter proposes a new implementation of phase-disposition pulse-width modulation (PD-PWM) for multilevel flying capacitor (FC) converters using a single triangular carrier. The proposed implementation is much simpler than conventional PD-PWM techniques based on multiple trapezoidal-shaped carriers, generates the same results as far as natural capacitor voltage balance is concerned and offers better quality line-to-line voltages when compared to phase-shifted PWM. The proposed algorithm is based on reshaping the reference signal to fit within the range of a single carrier and assigning each crossing of the reference signal with the carrier to a particular pair of switches at any time. The proposed algorithm is suitable for digital implementation taking maximum benefit from the PWM units available in the processor. Simulation and experimental results are presented from the five-level FC converter to verify the proposed PD-PWM implementation.

The problems of the dynamics of sweeping converters with pulse-width and pulse-frequency-width modulation used in devices that provide optoelectronic potential separation of DC circuits are discussed. It is demonstrated that pulse-frequency-width modulation enhances noise immunity in the region of frequencies of noise signals above the carrier frequency of a sweeping converter. Structural methods that can be used to improve the temporal and temperature stability of characteristics of devices for potential separation and to considerably reduce inaccuracies in their operation with respect to those of devices with similar functionality are considered. The paper may be of interest to experts in power and information electronics, electric drives, and industrial process automation.

This paper presents a PWM strategy for the reduction of common-mode (CM) voltage generated by variable-speed motor drives composed of two-level, three-phase active-front-end rectifier and three-phase inverter. This method theoretically provides complete elimination of the CM voltage by synchronizing all inverter commutations with rectifier commutations, so that the resulting CM voltage does not vary. The degrees of freedom of this strategy are studied and an experimental implementation is provided on a 15 kW prototype to validate the method effectiveness. Taking into account dead-time compensation, measurements in time and frequency domains show that the CM voltage is strongly reduced and that more than 15 dB reduction is achieved in a wide frequency range.

This paper presents a new pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique for all-digital transmitters (ADT) that reduces the PWM harmonic distortion near the transmitted carrier frequency. This technique is used to shape the ADT's quantization noise by changing the PWM waveform patterns, avoiding the need of a high quality factor analog output filter. With this approach, the ADT gains an additional degree of flexibility for the carrier frequency since it is not bound to any fixed narrow-band filter. The results show the feasibility and advantages of the approach without increasing the complexity for the overall system. The noise peak power reduction shown is quite significant, reaching more than 50 dB reduction for the first PWM harmonic.

This article is devoted to the simulation of control system for power converter with voltage-source inverter and sine-filter. The control system is designed with active harmonics filtering and can produce output voltage with less than 5% THD under RL- or non-linear load. This paper describes the structure of the control system and its implementation in Simulink environment of MATLAB. The advantages of the software harmonic compensation are shown. The simulation results confirm the efficiency of control method. The working algorithm is suitable for software implementation in the real-time control system.

The problem of cascaded control system design for a Cuk converter is discussed where control system consists of three feedback loops. In the first one the input current control is provided by means of pulse-width modulated (PWM) proportional-integral (PI) controller. In the second one the voltage across capacitor for transferring energy is regulated by PI controller. Finally, in the third one the voltage across capacitor for storing energy is maintained by integral (I) controller. The both PI controllers are designed based on singular perturbation technique (time-scale separation technique) such that multi-time-scale motions are artificially induced in the closed-loop system. Numerical simulations are included in order to show the efficiency of the proposed design methodology.

This paper presents the development of an electric skateboard and with a flyback switch-mode rectifier (SMR) based battery charger. An interleaving DC/DC buck converter-fed DC motor is established and used as the propulsion actuator of the skateboard. Thanks to the interleaving approach, the armature current ripple is reduced, and the fault tolerance of power circuit is preserved due to the redundancy provided by paralleled converter cells. In addition, the simple random pulse-width modulation (PWM) control using pseudo random binary sequence (PRBS) signal is applied to randomize the armature current harmonic spectral distribution. For battery charging, a SMR is developed and utilized as a charger for the electric skateboard. By operating this SMR under discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), the inherent power factor correction (PFC) function of AC input is preserved without applying current mode control. Meanwhile, the controllable and well-regulated DC output voltage is obtained for performing the battery charging.

The large number of voltage levels and high quality of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) output voltage and current makes modulation at fundamental frequency a viable alternative. However, a staircase output voltage does not necessarily translate to fundamental switching frequency of the MMC sub-modules (SMs). This is because the voltage balancing algorithm usually requires several SMs to switch at any sampling period. This paper proposes a voltage balancing algorithm capable of controlling the exact number of SM transitions that are allowed within the arms of an MMC enabling improved regulation of the SM capacitor voltages. The proposed implementation can be extended to any modulation and circulating current control method. It is also shown that enabling the minimum additional transitions within the arm offers the best compromise between SM capacitor voltage ripple and increase in the switching frequency. The proposed method is verified for all operating points with extensive simulation results and demonstrated in an experimental prototype with five SMs per arm.
