The problem of regulation for a DC motor with autonomous voltage inverter is discussed. The considered control system consists of two feedback loops. In the first one, the armature current control for a DC motor is provided by means of pulse-width modulated control of such autonomous voltage inverter as the H-bridge. In the second one, DC motor speed control is maintained. Proportional-integral (PI) controllers are designed for armature current and motor speed control based on singular perturbation technique such that multi-time-scale motions are artificially induced in the closed-loop system. Multi-time-scale motions analysis allows getting analytical expressions for selection of controller parameters. Simulation results are presented as well.

Electric motors driven by pulse-width modulated (PWM) waveforms exhibit different power loss and heating characteristics than line-fed motors. Experimental results indicate that motor losses and heating increase as the drive switching frequency decreases. Motor power losses for low switching frequencies are described, and if the increase in motor power loss is high enough such that motor overheating is a concern, a three-phase line reactor between the drive output and the motor terminals may be used to mitigate the additional motor losses and possible motor overheating. This paper presents the effect of PWM waveforms on motor losses and demonstrates that the use of a small three-phase line reactor between the drive and the motor dramatically reduces the motor losses under low PWM switching frequencies.

Low-order harmonic pulsating torque is a major concern in high-power drives, high-speed drives and motor drives operating in over-modulation region. This paper considers the specific case of eliminating or minimizing the sixth-harmonic torque (T-6) with a PWM waveform having only two switching angles per quarter. A method for evaluation of harmonic torques in the synchronously revolving dq reference frame is presented. This expression is used to propose an optimal PWM which minimizes T-6. This paper also evaluates the frequency-domain based approximate solutions for elimination of T-6 (both theoretically and experimentally), and brings out the divergence in performances of the different solutions. A condition to identify the best among these approximate solutions is presented. The best solution obtained through the frequency-domain approach is found to be close to the above optimal PWM.

A new type of quadratic buck converter is presented, analyzed, simulated and experimented in the continuous conduction mode (CCM), the usual way that converters are used. Because of the static conversion ratio dependency on the duty cycle the new converter is ideal for applications where only a small voltage step-down is needed. The converter consists of one transistor, three diodes, two inductors and two capacitors.

A pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique has been applied for efficient supply power control in microwave wireless power transfer systems. For this evaluation, a high-efficiency GaN HEMT amplifier and rectifier operating at the 5.4-GHz band have been fabricated, which are used as a DC-to-RF and RF-to-DC converter, respectively. The fabricated amplifier and rectifier delivered a maximum drain efficiency of 82% at 5.43 GHz and a maximum RF-to-DC efficiency of 78% at 5.45 GHz, respectively. In the evaluation of the supply power control, a total system efficiency of more than 47% was maintained for a supply power change from 90 to 860mW by using the PWM technique.

The paper deals with use of numerical techniques implemented in ANSYS software package for simulation of synchronous electric machines with permanent magnets. The possibilities and advantages of simultaneous simulation of the electromagnetic processes inside the synchronous machine with permanent magnets and simulation of the electric processes in control circuit of the drive system with help of the software Maxwell 2D and Simplorer are demonstrated. Results of simulation of the synchronous electric motor drive system of the power steering of a passenger car were collected and discussed.

Carrier-based pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategies are commonly applied to modular multilevel converters (MMC). This paper proposes a modified PWM technique with unequal and varying carrier frequencies between consecutive levels. The variation between two consecutive carriers is calculated in order to maintain a constant average switching frequency regardless of modulation index and number of levels in the output. The proposed method effectively shifts the major harmonic content of output waveforms to higher frequencies at the cost of a slight increase in low order harmonics. Details on the derivation of the carrier frequencies as well as simulation and experimental results of the proposed method demonstrate the viability of the method as an alternative modulation technique for the MMC.

The paper describes the development of a micro-satellite attitude determination and control subsystem (ADCS) and verification of its functionality by software-in-the-loop (SIL) method. The role of ADCS is to provide attitude control functions, including the de-tumbling and stabilizing the satellite angular velocity, and as well as estimating the orbit and attitude information during the satellite operation. In Taiwan, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), dedicating for students to design experimental low earth orbit micro-satellite, called AFITsat. For AFITsat, the operation of the ADCS consists of three modes which are initialization mode, de-tumbling mode, and normal modes, respectively. During the initialization mode, ADCS collects the early orbit measurement data from various sensors so that the data can be downlinked to the ground station for further analysis. Particularly emphasized in this article, during the de-tumbling mode, ADCS implements the thrusters in plus-wide modulation control method to decrease the satellite angular velocity. ADCS provides the attitude determination function for the estimation of the satellite state, during normal mode. The three modes of microsatellite are adopted Kalman filter algorithm estimate microsatellite attitude. This article will discuss to use the SIL validation ADCS function and verify its feasibility.

In this paper construction of a system with the stabilization of the current value of the variable voltage and frequency based on AC-AC regulator with voltage boost with unity power factor function with PWM control is proposed. A mathematical model of the system is constructed. The investigation results concerning the properties of the offered AC-AC regulators and their possible applications for stabilization of voltage in power supply stand-alone systems characterized by dual-range of change of the generated voltage are presented. The approach is based on the introduction of a high frequency variable voltage-additive supply voltage.

This paper describes a novel concept to encode amplitude and phase information in binary waveforms for switch-mode power amplifiers (SMPAs). A combination of a phase-modulated delta-sigma modulation (DSM) and pulse-width modulation (PWM) makes it possible to adapt signal generation to the power amplifier limits. The proposed system overcomes the inherent signal quality limits of digital systems with fixed clock frequencies by applying a phase modulated clock. We demonstrate that it is possible to achieve the performance of conventional concepts at less than half of the bit rate. Simulation and measurement results are given for important figures of merit of mobile communication signals with high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). A proof of concept is implemented in a laboratory setting using a conventional FPGA.
