This paper presents a voltage balancing method for stacked multicell converters based on phase disposition pulse-width modulation. This method is based on minimizing a cost function to determine the optimum redundant state for capacitor voltage balance for each particular voltage level. The robustness of the proposed voltage balancing method is verified against static and dynamic unbalanced load conditions. Furthermore, a significant reduction in the switching frequencies of the power devices is achieved by using sawtooth carriers instead of standard triangular carriers without affecting the voltage balancing capability.

A detailed analysis of two pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods is performed in this paper for grid connected converters. The considered methods are: sinusoidal carrier regulated by the slope of a trapezoidal waveform PWM (SLPWM) and frequency modulated triangular carrier PWM (HIPWM-FMTC). The analysis of the two PWM methods is realized with four performance indicators: standard and weighted total harmonic distortion (THD and WTHD), fulfillment of the grid connection requirements and minimum pulse width. The results are compared with those obtained for the Space Vector modulation (SVPWM) and Selective Harmonic Elimination PWM (SHE-PWM). Experimental results are presented for a 1 kVA inverter prototype to validate the paper conclusions.

Diode-assisted buck-boost voltage source inverter (VSI) boosts the dc source voltage by introducing a diode-assisted capacitor network. The new topology extends voltage regulation range and avoids extreme duty ratio of switching devices in front boost circuit. As for the unique structure, various pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategies are provided to obtain the maximum linear voltage gain with regard to the chopped intermediate dc-link voltage of the inverter bridge in one switching time period. However, when the inverter supplies inductive or capacitive load with small load power factor, the uni-directional current flow of diode may limit the application of the converter utilizing small voltage vectors for ac output voltage extension. This new operation condition is not expected and has not been discussed before. This paper makes a detailed circuit analysis of the relationship between the undesired operation condition and load power factor. All the theoretical findings are finally verified by simulations and experiments.

This paper reports the analysis of a voltage balancing technique based on optimal switching transitions for a flying capacitor (FC) multilevel converter using phase disposition pulse-width modulation. Since multiple switching transitions between two consecutive voltage levels may be available, such a redundancy is used to regulate the FC voltages at their desired levels. For the selection of the transitions, two techniques are studied and compared in terms of capacitor voltage ripples and switching frequencies. In the first technique, called optimum transition voltage balancing technique, the transitions between two consecutive voltage levels that produce high switching frequencies are avoided. On the other hand, all the transitions between consecutive levels are considered in the second technique. It is therefore called unrestricted voltage balancing technique. Study analyses are conducted by simulation considering all the possible modulation indices and load power factors.

This paper proposes a voltage balancing method for a seven-level stacked multicell converter (SMC) based on phase disposition pulse-width modulation (PD-PWM) using reduced switching transitions. This method is called optimal-transition voltage balancing method. The selection of the optimal transition sequence is performed by minimizing a cost function and the transitions that would result in more switchings of the converter semiconductor devices are avoided. The simulation results show a significant reduction of the average switching frequency as compared to the use of the optimal-state voltage balancing method, while maintaining the balance of the FC voltages. Moreover, the proposed PD-PWM voltage balancing method is robust to unbalanced linear loads, non-linear loads and transients.

An ultrasonic telemetry and a neural stimulator are presented. The wireless charging, data transmission and neural stimulation are demonstrated in this work. A frequency-shift keying with pulse-width modulation is adopted for wireless charging and data transmission. The stimulator provides an output current of 0 mu A similar to 900 mu A. The frequency of the current pulse is from 60Hz to 320Hz. This ultrasonic telemetry with a neural stimulator is fabricated in a 0.35 mu m CMOS technology. It occupies the area of 4.84 mm(2). The total power dissipation is 2.1mW.

This paper describes the design of a fast response zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) pulse-wdith modulation (PWM) boost converter. The techniques employed in the design include a combination of a PWM variable gain control and zero-voltage switching (ZVS), to improve the switching speed and efficiency of the converter for high frequency operation. A prototype was built to verify the design and to compare the proposed variable gain controller and the conventional controller using PWM. It is shown that with the proposed controller, the ZVT boost converter has a much faster response than the conventional PWM control. Moreover, the proposed controller is easily realized with simple analogue circuitries.

The paper presents the functional capabilities of regulator based on superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). The dc-ac converter with space-vector pulse-width modulation (SV-PWM) control ensures the power transfer between SMES and power system. The functions of power quality improvement, uninterruptible power supply and also increase of power system transient stability are considered. The simulation results of several operation modes are presented to validate the effectiveness of proposed control algorithms.
