Quasi-resonant dc-link soft-switching PWM inverter with active feedback clamp circuit for motor drive applications

A novel soft-switched quasi-resonant dc-link (QRDCL) inverter topology is derived using the concept of all auxiliary switch-assisted soft-switcher (AASS) employing the flying capacitor. This concept is known for its high efficiency at high power levels, and is used for soft-switching the boost switch in zero-voltage transition (ZVT) power factor correction (PFC) boost rectifiers. Also, an active clamp circuit configuration to clamp the dc-link and recover the energy stored in the clamp capacitor is introduced and is applied to the proposed inverter topology. The resultant inverter configuration gives high efficiency and is suitable for high power motor drive applications. The maximum dc-link voltage is clamped at around (1.05-1.1) times the input dc-source voltage. The proposed inverter is suitable for pulse width modulation (PWM) operation. A detailed analysis along with the design procedure of the proposed inverter is presented. Simulation and laboratory experiments are carried out to validate the analysis.

Multilevel single-phase rectifier-inverter with cascaded connection of two three-arm converters

The paper proposes a multilevel single-phase rectifier-inverter with the cascaded connection of two three-arm converters. A semisinusoidal PWM switching technique is developed to form a five-level switching pattern on the rectifier side and the inverter side simultaneously. The DC-link voltages of two converters are regulated with one voltage controller. Balance of two DC- link voltages is controlled with a feed-forward adjustment of the PWM control signal. Multiple-loop controller design of the system is presented. The feed-forward-plus-feedback control technique is employed for regulating both the rectifier current and the inverter voltage. A 2 kVA/220 V/60 Hz prototype system is set up and its control circuit is realised based on Matlab real-time control. Effectiveness of the proposed circuits is confirmed with some experimental results.

Impact of DG interface control on islanding detection and nondetection zones

Islanding detection of Distributed Generation (DG) is considered as one of the most important aspects when interconnecting DGs to the distribution system. With the increasing penetration and reliance of the distribution systems on DGs, new interface control strategies are being proposed. Aside from its main task of supplying active power, the DG could provide voltage support, improve the power factor, or mitigate other power quality problems. This paper examines the impact of the interface control strategy of inverter based DGs on islanding detection. The Non-detective Zone (NDZ) for over/under voltage and over/under frequency is derived analytically for each interface control and validated by simulation.

Induction generator hybrid applications with active power filter

A hybrid excitation system is presented, consisting of a capacitor bank with a small-scale active power filter (APF), to regulate the output voltage of the stand-alone induction generator (IG) by controlling its reactive current component and to filter the harmonic currents generated by a nonlinear diode rectifier load. A deadbeat current control structure for pulse-width modulation APF connected to a stand-alone IG working with variable speed and different types of loads is proposed to enhance the operating performance of the stand-alone IG. Sensorless control of the IG, meaning current vector control without voltage sensor and mechanical shaft sensor, is considered and the fixed command control for the IG line-to-line voltage is achieved with high accuracy. In the proposed system a new design of phase-locked-loop circuit is used to determine the stator voltage vector position of the IG. A 2.2 kW laboratory prototype has been built to confirm the feasibility of the proposed method. The measurement results validate the proposed power generating system with the deadbeat current controller as a good application for the IG to reduce the total system cost.

Generalised design methodology of second-order filters for voltage-source inverters with space-vector modulation

The paper presents a systematised and generalised methodology of second-order output filter for inverters that synthetise sinusoidal voltage waveforms through space-vector pulse-width modulation (PWM). The objective of this methodology is to determine the largest natural frequency of the filter that ensures specification of the maximum total harmonic distortion (THD) admissible in the Output voltages of the PWM inverter. The proposed methodology is discussed in detail, including the description of the steps needed to derive the design procedure for different topologies of voltage inverters, and the procedure for obtaining the design curves. To illustrate the use of the proposed methodology, detailed design procedures are given for single-phase, three-phase three-wire and three-phase four-wire filter topologies. Finally, examples are presented which include experimental results demonstrating the validity of the proposed design methodology.

Solution trajectories of the harmonic-elimination problem

The paper considers the problem of finding the notch angles which are required for implementing programmed-harmonic-elimination switching pulse-width-modulated (PWM) invertors. For a desired fundamental output voltage, the proposed methodology employs the Krawczyk-Moore test within a linear-programming-based search to determine, with mathematical certainty, a set of N-dimensional boxes enclosing all solutions of the harmonic-elimination problem. Each of these boxes contains a distinct and unique solution, and is a safe starting region for a Newton iterative method applied to solve the transcendental harmonic-elimination equations. Once all solutions for a given fundamental amplitude are determined, the solution trajectories for all feasible amplitudes are traced using a simple continuation method which is essentially a numerical adaptation of the implicit-function theorem. The proposed technique is used for optimising line-to-neutral quarter-wave symmetric PWM waveforms employed in three-phase applications. Switching-angle spreads from 0 degrees to 60 degrees and 0 degrees to 90 degrees are considered. Solution trajectories are computed for up to eight switching angles.

A novel soft-switching PWM utility frequency AC to high-frequency AC power conversion circuit, incorporating boost-half-bridge inverter topology, which is more suitable and acceptable for cost effective consumer induction heating applications, is presented. The operating principle and the operation modes are described using equivalent circuits with the operating voltage and current waveforms. The operating performances are illustrated and evaluated, including the power regulation and power conversion efficiency against duty cycle characteristics based on the power dissipation as compared with those of the previously developed high-frequency inverter. The practical effectiveness of the power converter is substantially proved, based on experimental results from a practical design example.

Three-phase three-level active power filter with a clamped capacitor topology

An eight-switch voltage source inverter for harmonic elimination and reactive power compensation is presented. The adopted inverter is based on a three-phase two-leg clamped capacitor circuit topology to reduce the voltage stress on the power semiconductors. Four active switches and one clamped capacitor are used in each inverter leg to achieve three-level pulse-width modulation. The adopted inverter is operated as a controllable current source to supply the necessary active power to compensate for the inverter losses, to eliminate current harmonics and to compensate the reactive power. Therefore, the sinusoidal line currents are drawn from the AC source. Three control loops are used in the control scheme to obtain the constant DC-link voltage, to track the line current command and to balance the neutral-point voltage. The redundant operating states in the adopted inverter can be selected to compensate the clamped capacitor voltage. A mathematical model of the proposed inverter for an active power filter is derived and the control scheme provided. Simulations and experiments based on a laboratory scale-down prototype are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

ZVS-PWM flyback converter with a simple auxiliary circuit

A novel zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) pulse-width-modulated flyback dc/dc converter with a simple auxiliary circuit is proposed. The auxiliary circuit IS configured in the presented ZVS-PWM flyback converter to perform soft-switching in the semiconductor devices and soft commutation of the main switches without additional current stress. Eight transition states for describing the behaviour of the ZVS-PWM flyback converter in one switching period are described. A prototype rated at 150W, operating 80kHz has been implemented in laboratory. Analysis, design, and the control circuitry are also presented.

Synchronisation method for three-phase PWM converters under unbalanced and distorted grid

A new open-loop synchronisation method for three-phase PWM converters connected to the utility grid is proposed, which gives good performance under distorted and highly unbalanced grid voltages. Moreover, it has a better performance in terms of distortion in the synchronisation signals when compared with other open-loop methods. It has a good transient performance for frequency, phase and amplitude disturbances when compared with closed-loop methods. In addition, a frequency adaptation algorithm is proposed for applications where large frequency variations are expected, such as in weak grids. Experimental results using a DSP TMS320F2812 are given to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed synchronisation method.
