This paper develops the architecture of a digital PWM controller for application in multiphase voltage regulation modules (VRMs). In this context, passive current sharing and VRM transient response with nonzero controller delay are analyzed. A scheme for sensing a combination of the VRM output voltage and output current with a single low-resolution window analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is proposed. The architecture and IC implementation of a digital PWM (DPWM) generation module, using a ring-oscillator-multiplexer scheme, is discussed. Experimental results from a prototype VRM and a partial controller. IC implementation are presented.

This paper discusses the presence of steady-state limit cycles in digitally controlled pulse-width modulation (PWM) converters, and suggests. conditions on the control law and the quantization resolution for their elimination. It then introduces single-phase and multi-phase controlled digital dither as a means of increasing the effective resolution of digital PWM (DPWM) modules, allowing for the use of low resolution DPWM units in high regulation accuracy applications. Bounds on the number of bits of dither that can be used in a particular converter are derived. Finally, experimental results confirming the theoretical analysis are presented.

A novel repetitive controller directly combined with an open loop SPWM inverter is presented in this paper. To cope with the high-resonant peak of the open loop inverter that may cause instability, a zero-phase-shift notch filter other than the inverse transfer function of the inverter or a conventional second-order filter is incorporated in the controller. The proposed method has good harmonic rejection and large tolerance to parameter variations. To further reduce the steady-state error, low-pass-filter Q(z) algorithm is applied. DC bias problem is also taken into consideration and solved with the repetitive controller itself. The method is implemented with a digital signal processor and achieves low THD % (1.4%-1.7%) with nonlinear loads and fast error, convergence (3-5 fundamental periods). It proves to be a cost-effective solution for common UPS products where high-quality output voltage is more stressed than fast dynamic response.

Mixed-technology systems defined as networks of interconnected components may be simulated by imposing conservation of flow at each node. Given a library of physical component models in a standard form and the means to embed software algorithms for control, this approach to simulation requires little more from the user than to specify what types of physical components are present and how these physical components are interconnected to each other and to the control algorithms. This paper summarizes the technical foundations for this user-friendly simulation philosophy and reports in some detail its application to variable reluctance motor drive systems. Novel features include the development of both switched and averaged models of the pulse-width modulated inverter, and the design and demonstration of high-performance position control algorithms.

Multimodular systems based on the multilevel Flying Capacitor (FC) converter topology are discussed in this paper. Three control techniques are studied and their performance is compared against specific criteria. Different types of Multicarrier Sinusoidal PWM (MSPWM) techniques used for each module along with the Phase-Shifting (PS) concept among the different modules are considered. Techniques with high frequency modulation ratio and the Fundamental Frequency PWM (FFPWM) are studied. The Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the output quantities, the system's bandwidth, and the potential switching losses are discussed. Simulation results are given to support the findings.

When a Fuzzy Logic controller is used, the tracking error and transient overshoots of PWM can be considerably reduced. The simulations carried out show that the Dynamic voltage restorer provides excellent voltage regulation capabilities. A microcontroller-based multi-sensor temperature measurement and control system that uses a steady-state one-dimensional heat-flow technique for absolute determination of thermal conductivity of a rigid poor conductor using the guarded hot-plate method is described. The objective of this project was to utilize the latest powerful, yet inexpensive, technological developments, sensors, data acquisition and control system, computer and application software, for research and teaching by example. The system uses an ST6220 microcontroller and LM335 temperature sensors for temperature measurement and control. The instrument interfaces to a computer via the serial port using a Turbo C++ programme. LM335Z silicon semiconductor temperature sensors located at different axial locations in the heat source were calibrated and used to measure temperature in the range from room temperature (about 293 K) to 373 K. A zero and span circuit was used in conjunction with an eight-to-one-line data multiplexer to scale the LM335 output signals to fit the 0-5.0 V full-scale input of the microcontroller's on-chip ADC and to sequentially measure temperature at the different locations. Temperature control is achieved by using software-generated pulse-width-modulated signals that control power to the heater. This article emphasizes the apparatus's instrumentation, the computerized data acquisition design, operation and demonstration of the system as a purposeful measurement system that could be easily adopted for use in the undergraduate laboratory. Measurements on a 10 mm thick sample of polyurethane foam at different temperature gradients gave a thermal conductivity of 0.026 +/- 0.004 W m(-1) K-1.

The progress of semiconductor technology and control systems the last years has made possible the realisation of highly efficient and low priced microprocessor-based controllers for the control of asynchronous motors. This paper describes the design and realization of a microcomputer-based device for frequency regulation of an asynchronous motor. Through the regulation of motor's supply frequency is achieved regulation of its speed. The control is based on PWM method, with voltage feedback, and frequency regulation is performed in the range of 20Hz to 60 Hz. The application platform is an automatic industrial press machine in a machines constructions company.

This study is focused on the development of control unit of a tilt table designed for a rehabilitation patient who has been confined to bed for a long time and may be in orthostatic hypotension because blood vessels of the patient are not contracted by falloff of control function in the autonomic nervous system when the patient stands upright. The control unit of the tilt table suggested in this study monitors bio-signals of the patient and controls the tilting angle and speed so that the patient may not be in dangerous state.
