A high-efficiency video coding method using matching pursuits, which is a waveform coding technique, has recently been proposed. In this method, the motion compensated prediction error image is encoded by applying matching pursuits. In the present paper, we propose a matching pursuits coding method that encodes the sub-band images derived from motion compensated prediction error images. The complexity of the proposed method is reduced compared to the full-band matching pursuits because of lighter inner product computation due to reduction of both the resolution of the sub-band and the basis function length of the dictionary. We evaluated the coding performance and computational complexity of the proposed method via computer simulations

Different denoising schemes show dissimilar types of artifacts. For example, certain transform-based denoising schemes could introduce artifacts in smooth regions while others eliminate texture regions. Using different schemes for denoising a noisy image, we can consider the denoising results as different estimates of the image. Through linear combination of the results, we minimize the l 2 norm of the error to find the optimum coefficients in a least-square-error sense. We employ the wavelet transform, contourlet transform, and adaptive 2-D Wiener filtering as our denoising schemes. Then we apply the proposed method to the denoising results of the individual schemes. This approach eliminates most of the artifacts and achieves significant improvement in the PSNR values. We also propose averaging of the denoising results as a special case of linear combination and show that it yields near-optimal performance

The well-known shrinkage technique is still relevant for contemporary signal processing problems over redundant dictionaries. We present theoretical and empirical analyses for two iterative algorithms for sparse approximation that use shrinkage. The general IT algorithm amounts to a Landweber iteration with nonlinear shrinkage at each iteration step. The block IT algorithm arises in morphological components analysis. A sufficient condition for which general IT exactly recovers a sparse signal is presented, in which the cumulative coherence function naturally arises. This analysis extends previous results concerning the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) and basis pursuit (BP) algorithms to IT algorithms

We propose and study a new technique for efficiently acquiring and reconstructing signals based on convolution with a fixed FIR filter having random taps. The method is designed for sparse and compressible signals, i.e., ones that are well approximated by a short linear combination of vectors from an orthonormal basis. Signal reconstruction involves a nonlinear orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm that we implement efficiently by exploiting the nonadaptive, time-invariant structure of the measurement process. While simpler and more efficient than other random acquisition techniques like compressed sensing, random filtering is sufficiently generic to summarize many types of compressible signals and generalizes to streaming and continuous-time signals. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate its efficacy for acquiring and reconstructing signals sparse in the time, frequency, and wavelet domains, as well as piecewise smooth signals and Poisson processes

A progressive and scalable, region of interest (ROl) image coding scheme based on matching pursuits (MP) is presented. Matching pursuit is a multi-resolutional signal analysis tool and can be employed in order to progressively refine the quality of a set of selected regions of an image up to a specific grade. The computational complexity of this analysis method can be reduced by decreasing the size of MP dictionary. Thus, the proposed method provides a trade off between complexity, rate, and quality. By the suggested scheme, regions of an image with higher receiver's priority are refined in an interactive manner. The transmitter sends an initial coarse version of the image. Then, the receiver transmits its preferred ROI parameters. Afterwards, the reconstructed image is refined according to the ROl parameters, in a progressive way

A new imaging method is proposed for ISAR with multiple measurement vectors (MMV) based on sparse signal representation. As an extension of single measurement sparse signal representation, MMV can enhance the ability of suboptimal procedure to find the proper sparse solution and also offers potential robustness to noise, supposing the measurement vectors having a same sparsity structure. Simulations have shown its superior performance. Here it is first presented for ISAR imaging. Imaging result of real data shows it is a promising method for ISAR

Video coding schemes based on matching pursuits have been shown to have better coding efficiency and perceptual quality at low bit rates than DCT-based video coding schemes. Matching pursuit is a greedy algorithm that decomposes a signal into a linear combination of bases within an over complete dictionary. However, as the bases are not independent, the redundancy in linear combinations increases as the number of iterations of matching pursuit increases. In this paper, we introduce an orthonormal matching pursuit algorithm that reduces the redundancy between bases and represents a signal by a linear combination of bases more efficiently. Our proposed updated full search matching pursuit algorithm has been shown to be effective in both coding performance and computational complexity. Based on this algorithm, we present an orthonormal matching pursuit video coding scheme that achieves a more efficient coding performance. The coding efficiency and perceptual quality are evaluated and compared to traditional matching pursuit video coding schemes

Signal decomposition is usually used as a preprocessing step in signal processing. After decomposing an original signal, we can process each decomposed bases individually. Different decomposition methods result in different bases. Less number of bases could reduce the complexity of further processing. This paper shows a new method, which decomposes a signal into a mixture of continuous and discontinuous bases. The method decomposes signals into continuous and discontinuous bases separately first, and then select most significant bases by using sparse Bayesian learning. Our experiment results show that it can reduce the number of bases and improve the accuracy

In this paper, a novel approach to extract the features of radar emitter signals in the high density, complex and variable signal modulation environment is presented. Based on the over-complete time-frequency atom dictionary, the signals are decomposed into a linear expansion of atoms by the method of matching pursuit (MP). Then, improved quantum genetic algorithm is applied to effectively reduce the time-complexity at each search step of MP, and thus some optimal time-frequency atoms describing features of signals are obtained, which can provide some new feature parameters for the deinterleaving and recognition of the radar emitter signals subsequently. Experiment result proved the validity and feasibility of the approach and that the extracted atoms had the features of certain extent noise-suppression ability
