Methods are developed for extending the unsupervised projection pursuit learning algorithm of Bienenstock, Cooper and Munro (BCM) (1982) to time-dependent classification problems. Recurrent and differential models of BCM which look for temporal structure in the evolution of high-dimensional inputs are described. Ordinary BCM obtains a 10db improvement in a noise tolerance study when compared with backward propagation (BP) for a database of simulated inverse synthetic aperature radar (ISAR) presentations. The recurrent and differential BCM models address the problem of classification from sequences of multiple presentations.< >

Pollution problem is getting worse in China's urban rivers at present. This paper, after analyzing the factors affecting urban river water quality and choosing such six principal evaluation factors as BOD 5 , CODcr, petroleum, volatile phenol, NH 3 -N and total phosphorus, establishes a Projection pursuit analysis model for evaluating water quality in urban rivers, optimizes the evaluation model with the help of Ant Colony Algorithm, and applies the model in the evaluation and ordering of the water quality in ten urban rivers in Nanning. The research shows that Projection pursuit Regression Analysis in water quality evaluation helps avoid the errors caused by the subjective reasons as manifested in traditional evaluation methods, and, as the evaluation results are accurate and the method is simple, it can serve as a new way to evaluate the water quality in China's urban rivers.

Performing real time note detection of multiple audio sources is a difficult task due to the complex nature of audio signals. Typically notes are close in pitch and the harmonic overtones of each note are strongly interlaced, thus preventing standard filtering techniques. In this paper, we develop signal-optimized harmonic atom matching pursuit algorithm, which will be used to decompose an audio signal in terms of elementary waveforms called harmonic atoms. Matching pursuit is an iterative algorithm that correlates the signal against a dictionary set of Gabor atoms and searches for the atoms that exhibit the highest level of correlation. The resulting matched atoms allow for accurate and efficient detection of a single note or multiple notes played simultaneously. In this paper prior knowledge of the signal is used to calculate a parameter set to avoid a costly research over the complete dictionary. The parameter set defined for our proposed algorithm includes time-location, decay rate, frequency, scale and phase, which are calculated at the onset of each note played. The onset (transient) is detected by using a fourth order digital difference then an appropriate interval and optimal window atom is selected. This optimized algorithm is demonstrated through synthesized analysis example. The application of this algorithm in multi-source audio signal can also be demonstrated.

The matching pursuit algorithm derives an expansion of a signal in terms of the elements of a large dictionary of time-frequency atoms. This paper considers the use of matching pursuit for computing signal expansions in terms of damped sinusoids. First, expansion based on complex damped sinusoids is explored; it is shown that the expansion can be efficiently derived using the FFT and simple recursive filterbanks. Then, the approach is extended to provide decompositions in terms of real damped sinusoids. This extension relies on generalizing the matching pursuit algorithm to derive expansions with respect to dictionary subspaces; of specific interest is the subspace spanned by a complex atom and its conjugate. Developing this particular case leads to a framework for deriving real-valued expansions of real signals using complex atoms. Applications of the damped sinusoidal decomposition include system identification, spectral estimation, and signal modeling for coding and analysis-modification-synthesis.

In this paper, a novel algorithm for low bit-rate image compression is presented. In this technique, we use a new image representation algorithm called segmented orthogonal matching pursuit (SOMP) (Rabiee and Kashyap, 1998) to encode the subbands of an image. Our preliminary results show that our algorithm performs better than the segmentation based matching pursuit (QTMP) (Rabiee et al. 1996) and EZW (Shapiro 1993) encoders at lower bit rates, based on subjective image quality and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

Joint time-frequency representations offer a rich representation of event related potentials (ERPs) that cannot be obtained through individual time or frequency domain analysis. This rich representation, however, comes at the expense of increased data volume and the difficulty of interpreting the resulting representations. Therefore, methods that can reduce the large amount of time-frequency data to physiologically meaningful components are essential. The method presented in this paper extends principal component analysis to the time-frequency plane to reduce a large set of ERPs to a small number of significant components. These components are then characterized using a Gabor dictionary to offer a succinct parametrization of the ERP data. The results show that the principal component analysis is successful at extracting components that can be described as the superposition of a small number of Gabor logons, and that the resulting set of logons succinctly represent physiologically meaningful ERP events

Advanced signal processing (SP) methods often lead to greedy algorithms that are time consuming, so useless in real time applications. However, nowadays, efficient implementations of such algorithms become more and more feasible, eventually with the help of concepts withdrawn from fields outside SP. This paper introduces an implementation for one of the most appealing signal analysis procedures based on a method devised about 10 years ago: the matching pursuit algorithm (MPA).

The authors consider the problem of a stochastic learning automaton interacting with an unknown random environment. The fundamental problem is that of learning, through interaction, the best action (that is, the action which is rewarded optimally) allowed by the environment. This paper proposes greedy numerical schemes to compute lower bounds of the restricted isometry constants that are central in compressed sensing theory. Matrices with small restricted isometry constants enable stable recovery from a small set of random linear measurements. We challenge this compressed sampling recovery using greedy pursuit algorithms that detect ill-conditioned sub-matrices. It turns out that these sub-matrices have large isometry constants and hinder the performance of compressed sensing recovery.

A novel image fusion algorithm based on orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) is proposed, which is named IFOMP algorithm and can be used for noise free or noise images. The matching pursuit algorithm provides an efficient image representation using an overcomplete dictionary. Firstly, the source images are decomposed into sub-images at different scales through Laplacian pyramid transform. The OMP method is exploited for capturing and fusing edges and texture features in the high frequency domain. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves performance compared to traditional wavelet fusion with slightly increased computational complexity, and the fusion image has good robustness.
