In the path tracking algorithm of unmanned vehicles, pure pursuit algorithm is widely used in low-speed application scenarios because of its simple model and easy implementation. In the pure pursuit algorithm, it is difficult to choose a suitable look-ahead distance for the unmanned vehicle. And there is a problem of outputting discontinuous steering angle under two continuous control cycle. Therefore, large heading and lateral error exist and make the tracking unstable. To solve these problems, firstly the look-ahead distance can be calculated by using the vehicle speed and the path information. Secondly, the PID controller is used to optimize the target steering angle which is calculated by the pure pursuit algorithm and then output stable angle to implement path tracking. In the golf course environment, a golf unmanned vehicle is used to track the predefined path. The results of optimized method show that the lateral error is reduced by 15.13 cm and the heading angle error is reduced by 1.88 degrees.

A novel image fusion algorithm based on orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) is proposed, which is named IFOMP algorithm and can be used for noise free or noise images. The matching pursuit algorithm provides an efficient image representation using an overcomplete dictionary. Firstly, the source images are decomposed into sub-images at different scales through Laplacian pyramid transform. The OMP method is exploited for capturing and fusing edges and texture features in the high frequency domain. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves performance compared to traditional wavelet fusion with slightly increased computational complexity, and the fusion image has good robustness.

Sparse signal modeling has been considered widely in the literature. In this paper, we discuss an extension of the matching pursuit sparse modeling algorithm to the case of simultaneously approximating multiple data signals; we outline the algorithm for general and for sinusoidal dictionaries. We then apply multichannel sinusoidal pursuit (M-SP) to spatial audio coding (SAC). In most SAC schemes, multichannel audio is coded by forming a downmix signal, compressing the down- mix with a legacy coder, and adding side information about spatial properties of the input audio. In the proposed M-SP system, a multichannel model of the input is used to derive the spatial information as well as a parametric model of an appropriate downmix signal. This joint spatial-parametric approach provides a different multichannel audio coding paradigm than that of previously described SAC methods.

In this paper, we propose a novel system architecture that employs a matching pursuit algorithm for angle of arrival detection. Two different basis selection algorithms, namely matching pursuit and orthogonal matching pursuit are investigated. The complexity of the algorithms are comparable to that of a simple beamformer, however their resolution capabilities are shown to be much higher. The proposed system does not require a priori knowledge on the number of angles to be resolved and uses very small amount of snapshots for convergence. Also, the performance is not affected by the correlation of the signals to be resolved, and it does not have the maximum separation requirements that arise in the case of ESPRIT.

Sinusoidal models have proven useful for speech and audio analysis, modification, synthesis, and compression. We describe an adaptive multiscale overlap-add sinusoidal model based on the matching pursuit algorithm and various refinements such as conjugate pursuit and orthogonal subspace projection. The model is useful for scalable audio coding and signal modification.

Detection of visual evoked potentials (VEP) elicited by repetitive stimuli is valuable in both laboratorial research and clinical practice. Therefore, knowing the characteristics of VEPs is of fundamental importance for adequate design of a signal detector. Usually, the signal is modeled as a steady-state VEP (ssVEP) consisting of the fundamental frequency and the higher harmonics, while ignoring the information contained in its transients (tVEP). We propose here to characterize both tVEP and ssVEP by chirplet time-frequency representation of VEP signal using a matching pursuit (MP) algorithm. Compared to the time-frequency analysis with short-time-Fourier-transform (STFT) and linear-prediction-coding (LPC) method, MP with chirplet shows not only clear characteristics of ssVEP, but a clear spindle-like time-frequency component of tVEP as well, which is not obvious in the other two methods.

We introduce an image coding algorithm based on the cortex transform, matching pursuit and perceptual pruning that selects and codes only the most perceptually relevant image components, as determined by a new image indistinguishability criterion that derives from a maximum likelihood paradigm. We demonstrate that this method selects image components that produce images with higher subjective quality than matching pursuit with the same number of components. We also show that our perceptual quantization rule makes a substantial gain over uniform scalar quantization. Finally, we present image coding results of high quality at low encoding rates.

Sequence alignment is the positioning of primary biological sequences, such as DNA, RNA and protein sequences, to identify regions of similarity in large databases. Common signal processing techniques include cross-correlations in time or frequency. However, these techniques can result in many misalignments when capturing a grouping in local or repetitive portions of the sequence. We propose a time-frequency based alignment technique using the matching pursuit decomposition method and a mapping algorithm. The aim of this alignment technique is to identify local and global alignments more efficiently and with greater precision than existing methods. Its success is based on the fact that sequence elements are mapped to unique Gaussian basis atoms that uniformly sample the time-frequency plane.

We propose a new directions of arrival (DOA) algorithm which provides very reliable estimates in fast time-varying environments. Popular DOA methods such as MUSIC and ESPRIT cannot be used in these environments because of their reliance on the estimation of a covariance matrix. The algorithm uses a two stage approach. The first stage uses a matching pursuit based algorithm to process each snapshot and determine DOA. These DOA estimates are aggregated at regular intervals and a subset of the DOA are selected and fed to a second processing stage. This stage consists of a bank of least squares estimators which are used to determine the final DOA estimate. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated for closely and widely spaced DOA over a range of SNR values.

This paper considers the scenario that a team of autonomous robots pursues a smart evader while concurrently building a global map in an unknown environment. We develop a modular hybrid system architecture to implement the decentralized control and coordination of multiple pursuers. A probabilistic framework is established to integrate the map building process with evader detection. Taking account of the nonholonomic constraints of vehicles, we improve the global-max pursuit policy with a novel underlying navigation method. Experimental results with physical robots demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.
