This paper introduces a novel nonlinear low-level representation of an image with signal-dependent noise. For multiplicative noisy image, we introduce an algorithm called multiplicative matching pursuit decomposition (MMPD), that decomposes the signal containing the intrinsic variation into a nonlinear expansion of waveforms that are selected from a redundant dictionary of functions. These waveforms are chosen in order to best match the signal local structures. The convergence of this new multiplicative decomposition has been proved and tested in practice. An application to speckle reduction in SAR images is described.

A simple sparse approximation problem requests an approximation of a given input signal as a linear combination of T elementary signals drawn from a large, linearly dependent collection. An important generalization is simultaneous sparse approximation. Now one must approximate several input signals at once using different linear combinations of the same T elementary signals. This formulation appears, for example, when analyzing multiple observations of a sparse signal that have been contaminated with noise. A new approach to this problem is presented here: a greedy pursuit algorithm called simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit. The paper proves that the algorithm calculates simultaneous approximations whose error is within a constant factor of the optimal simultaneous approximation error. This result requires that the collection of elementary signals be weakly correlated, a property that is also known as incoherence. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the algorithm often succeeds, even when the inputs do not meet the hypotheses of the proof.

Matching pursuit is a powerful and flexible optimisation technique that has found applications in different areas, including image and video compression. This paper proposes an underlying probabilistic model for the entropy coding of the parameters generated by the matching pursuit algorithm in the context of image coding. It also distinguishes between orthogonal and fully-orthogonal matching pursuit, and provides a formulation for rate-distortion optimized matching pursuit.

Humans have an exceptional capacity to identify patterns, clusters and a variety of characteristics in 1- and 2-dimensional spaces. In recent years immersive techniques and virtual reality have provided a third dimension. However, we are usually intimidated if we go up to 4 dimensions and we cannot identify but the simpler patterns in 5 or 6-dimensional spaces (with the use of glyphs). Fuzzy data contributes to further complication and each pixel is not only associated with several spectral values but with several class membership values as well. Projection pursuit is a statistical method that seeks interesting projections of a high dimensional space into a lower one according to a measure of interestingness (projection index). Projection pursuit provides therefore a flexible and convenient framework that can include current approaches to the dimensionality reduction problem (principal components, discriminant analysis) as well as fresh approaches. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional projection pursuit algorithms have been developed for the visualization of multispectral data (7 band Landsat-TM) with projection indices, which maximize class separability. An immersive environment with a data-brushing tool has been incorporated for the visualization of the three-dimensional projection pursuit output. Mixtures of RGB triplets represent fuzzy memberships.

The matching pursuit algorithm in Radon space to achieve texture feature extracting is presented. The dictionary for matching pursuit is designed according to the human visual system (HVS). Since the matching pursuit is performed in Radon space, featuring the texture is more suitable to HVS behavior. Computer simulation and experimental results are shown to demonstrate the proposed method is outperformed to retrieve the texture.

Matching pursuit (MP) video coding has been demonstrated to attain a better coding performance than DCT-based video coding in terms of PSNR and perceptual quality at very low bit rates. However, because of its massive computational complexity, the MP algorithm is usually only approximated. By approximating a residual in a subspace, we propose a multiple blocks search and update algorithm in MP video coding to achieve a faster and better MP approximation. In this paper, we evaluate the performance and compare it to the traditional one-block search algorithms. The experimental results show that our proposed algorithm can significantly improve the coding performance and encoding time.

A new encoding algorithm is proposed for encoding matching pursuit parameters in image compression applications. The new algorithm is a block based coding approach that takes advantage of correlations in atom positions and inner product coefficients in a rate distortion optimal manner. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm significantly improves the performance of the existing encoding algorithms and outperforms JPEG2000 at low bit rates.

Projection pursuit (PP) techniques are used to search for statistically interesting low-dimensional projections of complex, high-dimensional data. These projections reveal data structure useful for automatic classification applications. We derive a novel class of PP algorithms, comparing them with known PP algorithms. Texture-based cloud detection in airborne visible/infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) imagery from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is provided as a basis for inter-comparison.

This paper mainly discusses multi-agent pursuit-evasion game: one team of agents pursues another team of agents. Contract net protocol is extended, including improvement of alliance decision and permissively dynamic alliance. The multi-agent cooperative pursuit algorithm is proposed based on the extended contract net protocol. Simulation results have shown the feasibility and validity of the given algorithm.

The orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm is an adaptive nonlinear algorithm for signal decomposition using an overcomplete dictionary. A tree-search based orthogonal matching pursuit (TB-OMP) has been proposed (Cotter et al. (2001)). Although the TB-OMP algorithm improves the approximation performance, its computation time requirement increases exponentially making the algorithm impractical for certain applications. In this paper, we propose the flexible tree-search based orthogonal matching pursuit (FTB-OMP). The algorithm provides design parameters that give flexibility to establish a tradeoff between approximation performance and experimental time complexity. Sparse signal representations are frequently required in problems related to signal processing and communication areas. The proposed FTB-OMP algorithm is a promising solution for such problems.
