Sparse modeling of signals has recently received a lot of attention. Often, a linear under-determined generative model for the signals of interest is proposed and a sparsity constraint imposed on the representation. When the generative model is not given, choosing an appropriate generative model is important, so that the given class of signals has approximate sparse representations. In this paper we introduce a new scheme for dictionary learning and impose an additional constraint to reduce the dictionary size. Small dictionaries are desired for coding applications and more likely to ldquoworkrdquo with suboptimal algorithms such as Basis pursuit. Another benefit of small dictionaries is their faster implementation, e.g. a reduced number of multiplication/addition in each matrix vector multiplication, which is the bottleneck in sparse approximation algorithms.

A novel decomposition of functions using generalized bit-planes has been recently proposed. Such a decomposition maps a function into a set of indexes, thus performing quantization and signal decomposition in a single step. In a previous work, this signal representation model has been successfully used replacing the decomposition/quantization operations in Neff and Zakhor's matching pursuits video encoder. In this paper we investigate good codebooks for such decompositions whose construction is based on ridgelets. We show that by combining products of properly scaled and rotated ridgelets one can obtain codebooks which provide improved rate-distortion performances. Also, we confirm the theoretical prediction that good codebooks are the ones that have a small maximum angle between any vector in /spl Ropf//sup N/ and the closest one in the codebook.

A very low bit-rate audio coding algorithm suitable for wireless mobile communications is presented. The codec is based on a sinusoidal model, with modifications to reduce bit-rate and improve reconstructed audio quality. The improvements include signal adaptive analysis length, psychoacoustic model used in both matching pursuits algorithm and parameter quantization, and phaseless frequency domain audio reconstruction. At general bit-rate of 0.5 bit per sample, AM broadcasting audio quality is achieved.

The emerging theory of compressed sensing (CS) enables the reconstruction of sparse signals from a small set of random measurements. Since CS samples the signals at sub-Nyquist rate, it is particularly suitable for impulse ultra-wideband (I-UWB) communications where Nyquist sampling of the signal is a formidable challenge. In our previous work, CS has been successfully applied for I-UWB channel estimation and symbol detection. In this paper, we show that the performance of the I-UWB detector based on compressive measurements can be improved by exploiting the signal sparsity model. The matching pursuit (MP) algorithm is used to estimate the signal sparsity model from compressive measurements and then a more effective measurement matrix is designed for unknown signal detection. Performance of the proposed detector is analyzed. Simulation results show that the proposed detector has comparable performance to the digital receiver sampling at Nyquist rate.

Based on the theory of linear transformations, a novel time-frequency representation is presented for the echoes of targets with rectilinear trajectories and constant accelerations in the scoring system. First, time-frequency atoms called Dopplerlets are constructed based on the characteristics of Doppler frequency of echoes. Second, the continuous and discrete Dopplerlet transform is derived and the matching pursuit algorithm is presented. Third, the miss distance parameters are estimated based on the Dopplerlet transform and matching pursuit algorithm. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method

Signal recovery techniques for compressive sampling, such as matching pursuit (MP), orthogonal MP (OMP), and linear programming (LP), have been developed and applied to the spare channel estimation problem in orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexed (OFDM) systems. In this paper, we first propose using a newly developed algorithm, subspace pursuit (SP), for the channel estimation problem. It is shown that the SP algorithm can outperform the MP, OMP, and LP algorithms. However, the SP algorithm will fail if the number of the pilots is small. We then propose a decision-feedback method, referred to as the pseudo-pilot assisted (PA) SP, which can be used in low pilot-density scenarios. Simulations show that the proposed PASP can significantly improve the performance of channel estimation when the number of pilots is small.

The performance of approximation using redundant expansions rely on having dictionaries adapted to the signals. In natural high-dimensional data, the statistical dependencies are, most of the time, not obvious. Learning fundamental patterns is an alternative to analytical design of bases and is nowadays a popular problem in the field of approximation theory. In many situations, the basis elements are shift invariant, thus the learning should try to find the best matching filters. We present a new algorithm for iteratively learning generating functions that can be shifted at all positions in the signal to generate a highly redundant dictionary

A matching pursuit decomposes any signal into a linear expansion of waveforms that belong to a dictionary of functions. These waveforms are selected in order to best match the signal structures. For dictionaries of functions that have a wide range of different time-frequency localizations, a matching pursuit yields an adaptive time-frequency transform. The authors derive a signal energy distribution in the time-frequency plane which does not include interference terms, unlike Wigner and Cohen class distributions. Signal components that are coherent with respect to the dictionary can be extracted. It is shown that time-frequency dictionaries yield adaptive decompositions where signal structures are represented by Gabor functions that match their time-frequency signature. The properties of the signal components are explicitly given by the scale, frequency, time, and phase indexes of the selected Gabor functions.< >

The theory of compressed sensing has shown that sparse signals can be reconstructed exactly from remarkably few measurements. In this paper we consider a nonconvex extension, where the lscr 1 1 norm of the basis pursuit algorithm is replaced with the lscr p norm, for p < 1. In the context of sparse error correction, we perform numerical experiments that show that for a fixed number of measurements, errors of larger support can be corrected in the nonconvex case. We also provide a theoretical justification for why this should be so.

The method of optimal directions (MOD) is an iterative method for designing frames for sparse representation purposes using a training set. In this paper we use frames designed by MOD in a multiframe compression (MFC) scheme. Both the MOD and the MFC need a vector selection algorithm, and orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) is used in this paper. In the MFC scheme several different frames are used, each optimized for a fixed number of selected frame vectors in each approximation. We apply the MOD and the MFC scheme to ECG signals, and do experiments with both fixed size and variable size on the different frames used in the MFC scheme. Compared to traditional transform based compression, the experiments demonstrate improved rate-distortion performance by 1-4 dB, and that variable sized frames perform better than fixed sized frames.
