In the present work, a constructive learning algorithm is employed to design an optimal one-hidden neural network structure that best approximates a given mapping. The method determines not only the optimal number of hidden neurons but also the best activation function for each node. Here, the projection pursuit technique is applied in association with the optimization of the solvability condition, giving rise to a more efficient and accurate computational learning algorithm. As each activation function of a hidden neuron is optimally defined for every approximation problem, better rates of convergence are achieved. Since the training process operates the hidden neurons individually, a pertinent activation function employing Hermite polynomials can be iteratively developed for each neuron as a function of the learning set. The proposed constructive learning algorithm was successfully applied to identify a large-scale multivariate process, providing a multivariable model that was able to describe the complex process dynamics, even in long-range horizon predictions.

In this paper, ultrawideband (UWB) channel estimation based on the novel theory of compressive sensing (CS) is developed. The proposed approach relies on the fact that transmitting an ultra-short UWB pulse through a multipath channel leads to a received UWB signal that can be approximated by a linear combination of a few atoms from a pre-defined dictionary, yielding thus a sparse representation of the received signal. The CS reconstruction capabilities are exploited to recover the composite pulse-multipath channel from a reduced set of random projections using the matching pursuit algorithm. This reconstructed signal is subsequently used as a referent template in a correlator based detector. Extensive simulations show that for different propagation scenarios and UWB communication environments, the CS detector outperforms traditional correlators using just 1/3 of the sampling rate leading thus to a reduced use of analog-to-digital resources in the channel estimation stage.

A matching pursuit followed by a cancellation (MPC) algorithm is proposed for channel estimation in time-varying multipath channels for asynchronous CDMA. The algorithm has low computational complexity and consists of two steps. In the first step, a basic matching pursuit algorithm that identifies the strongest channel taps, and successively cancels them is used. The second step of the algorithm uses the already estimated channel taps to remove interference from the received vector in order to identify the channel coefficients more accurately. Analytical insights in terms of the Cramer-Rao lower bound are developed in order to understand the benefit of the MPC technique over the conventional least squares (LS) approach. The MPC algorithm is found to outperform the conventional LS technique when the channel is sparse with large delay spreads and/or the users are highly asynchronous. Our simulation results show that the proposed approach is highly robust against the number of users and it performs very well in rapidly fading channels.

We describe the process of convolving a transmitted wide bandwidth chirp signal with a simulated target and then show how the result of this convolution can be decomposed using a basis optimization approach algorithm. We then show how the wavelet packet basis set can prioritize the bandwidth in the chirp signal to those frequencies that represent the target while removing other frequencies that might contain clutter and noise. Finally we compare the resulting radar signal to the signal not prioritized by the basis optimization and show improvements in the detection performance of the target at the reduced bandwidth.

We propose a computationally efficient technique for recovery of sparse signals, which is based on dichotomous coordinate descent iterations, homotopy, and reweighting. We derive optimal rules for adding and removing elements to/from the support, guaranteeing that the cost function is minimized. Numerical examples show that the proposed technique achieves a mean-squared error smaller than that of the YALL1 algorithm and complexity comparable to that of the matched pursuit algorithm.

The performance of the algorithm is characterized in terms of mean squared identification error (MSIE). The convergence behavior of MPC is described. A method to terminate the MP step of the algorithm successfully is proposed and is shown to perform well. Our results show that MPC achieves performance close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB).

Matching pursuits is proved to be one of the most efficient techniques used in video coding. However, its computation effort is so tremendous that it may not be affordable in some real-time applications. This paper presents an efficient algorithm for the implementation of matching pursuits. Simulation results show that the computation effort can be successfully reduced with the proposed method.

The fastest learning automata (LA) algorithms currently available fall in the family of estimator algorithms introduced by Thathachar and Sastry. The pioneering work of these authors was the pursuit Algorithm, which pursues only the current estimated optimal action. Later, the same authors introduced a more sophisticated estimator algorithm, known as the TSE algorithm. This paper introduces first a vectorial representation the TSE algorithm that shows more clearly the underlying concepts of the TSE algorithm. Furthermore, using this vectorial representation, we introduce a generalized TSE estimator algorithm (GTSE). We argue that this learning scheme minimizes the probability of pursuing a wrong action and it is proven empirically to be the fastest converging estimator learning algorithm known to date. To attest this, we present a quantitative comparison of its performance against the TSE and other existing continuous estimator algorithms.

Recently, coded masks have been used to demonstrate a thin form-factor lensless camera, FlatCam, in which a mask is placed immediately on top of a bare image sensor. In this paper, we present an imaging model and algorithm to jointly estimate depth and intensity information in the scene from a single or multiple FlatCams. We use a light field representation to model the mapping of 3D scene onto the sensor in which light rays from different depths yield different modulation patterns. We present a greedy depth pursuit algorithm to search the 3D volume and estimate the depth and intensity of each pixel within the camera field-of-view. We present simulation results to analyze the performance of our proposed model and algorithm with different FlatCam settings.
