Matching pursuit (MP) uses a greedy search to construct a subset of vectors, from a larger set, which best represents a signal of interest. We extend this search for the best subset by keeping the K vectors which maximize the selection criterion at each iteration. This is termed the MP:K algorithm and represents a suboptimal search through the tree of all possible subsets where each node is limited to having K children. As a more suboptimal search, we can use the M-L search to select a subset of dictionary vectors, leading to the MP:M-L algorithm. We compare the computation and storage requirements for three variants of the MP algorithm using these searches. Through simulations, the significantly improved performance obtained using the MP:K and MP:M-L algorithms is demonstrated. We conclude that the modified matching pursuit (MMP) algorithm offers the best compromise between performance and complexity using these search techniques.

To reduce noise and speckles in the spectrograms of Doppler blood flow signals, a novel method, called matching pursuit with pulse coupled neural network (MPPCNN), has been proposed. The method considered is an iterative decomposition algorithm, which decomposes the Doppler ultrasound signals into linear expansion of atoms in a time-frequency dictionary using the matching pursuit (MP) for de-noising the Doppler ultrasound signal. Then, a simplified unidirectional pulse coupled neural network is used to calculate the firing matrix of the de-noised spectrogram. The Doppler speckles of the de-noised spectrogram are located and removed through analyzing and processing the PCNN firing matrix. Experiments were conducted on simulation signals whose SNRs are 0 dB, 5 dB and 10 dB. The result shows that the MPPCNN performs effectively in reducing noise, eliminating Doppler speckles, and enhancing the Doppler spectrograms.

Sound recordings include transients and sustained parts. Their analysis with a basis expansion is not rich enough to represent efficiently all such components. pursuit algorithms choose the decomposition vectors depending upon the signal properties. The dictionary among which these vectors are selected is much larger than a basis. Matching pursuit is fast to compute, but can provide coarse representations. Basis pursuit gives a better representation but is very expensive in terms of calculation time. This paper develops a high resolution matching pursuit: it is a fast, high time-resolution, time-frequency analysis algorithm, that makes it likely to be used far musical applications.

A learning automaton is an automaton that interacts with a random environment, having as its goal the task of learning the optimal action based on its acquired experience. Many learning automata have been proposed, with the class of estimator algorithms being among the fastest ones. Thathachar and Sastry (1986), through the pursuit algorithm, introduced the concept of learning algorithms that pursue the current optimal action, following a reward-penalty learning philosophy. Later, Oommen and Lanctot 1990) extended the pursuit algorithm into the discretized world by presenting the discretized pursuit algorithm, based on a reward-inaction learning philosophy. We argue that the reward-penalty and reward-inaction learning paradigms in conjunction with the continuous and discrete models of computation lead to four versions of pursuit learning automata. We contend that a scheme that merges the pursuit concept with the most recent response of the environment permits the algorithm to utilize the LA's long-term and short-term perspectives of the environment. We present all the four resultant pursuit algorithms, and also present a quantitative comparison between them.

A signal adaptive time-frequency decomposition to extend matching pursuit algorithm-probabilistic matching pursuit is studied. This method is firstly introduced into early fault diagnosis of rolling bearing. It adopts Gaussian wavelet to construct the time-frequency atoms dictionary. Applying probabilistic matching pursuit, we can accurately extract the early defect features by computing coherence between vibration signals of rolling bearing with inner or outer race fault and the dictionary elements. Comparing with matching pursuit, probabilistic matching pursuit represents vibration signal features with very fine resolution and sparsity in the time-frequency domain through computer simulations. Simultaneously, experiment results confirm that probabilistic matching pursuit is quite effective to facilitate the early diagnosis and identification of rolling bearing faults.

The adaptive matching pursuit (AMP) algorithm was proposed as a basis selection algorithm for time-varying dictionaries. We propose an adaptive orthogonal matching pursuit (AOMP) algorithm for estimation of time-varying channels with sparse impulse response samples. The performance of the AOMP algorithm is then compared with the AMP algorithm through mean squared identification error and by means of a decision feedback equalizer. It is shown, using simulation results, that the AOMP algorithm, by avoiding the re-selection problem that exists in the AMP algorithm, obtains more accurate channel estimates

We focus on the problem of compressive sampling of Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) signal via Matching pursuit. We designed an adaptive matching pursuit algorithm through dynamic dictionary optimization. Results from the sparse property of LFM under Chirplet Basis, we use Chirplet atom to generate dictionary. Then by feeding the information of signal back into dictionary generating process, the grid error can be reduced significantly. It also allows us to get better parameter estimation results and lower signal sampling rate. We demonstrate computing performance on a LFM signal sampling example.

Interference noising originating from the ultrasonic testing defect signal seriously influences the accuracy of the signal extraction and defect location. A hybrid artificial fish swarm optimization algorithm based on mutation operator and simulated annealing are employed to search the best atomic. it can greatly reduce complexity of sparse representations Experimental results to detect ultrasonic flaw echoes contaminated by white Gaussian additive noise or correlated noise are presented in the paper. Compared with the wavelet transform. the results show that the signal quality and performance parameters are improved obviously.

In this paper we propose a new approach based on energy-adaptive matching pursuits to improve sinusoidal modelling for parametric speech and audio coding. To reduce the complexity of the algorithm, an over-complete dictionary composed of complex exponentials is used. An analysis-synthesis windows scheme that avoids overlapping is proposed. For efficient quantization of sinusoidal model parameters, a new algorithm that largely reduces the side information required by the decoder is described. Experimental results show evidence of the advantages of the proposed method to be integrated into multi-parts models for parametric speech/audio coding.
