For the past few years we have been facing a great electricity crisis since the demand of electricity is more than the production. Hence it is very important to manage electricity efficiently. In this regard one of the major challenges in electricity management is misuse of the power consumption due to electricity theft in public area. In this paper we propose a technique that detects the electricity theft by remotely monitoring the electricity meter readings to see whether it is within the specified threshold value and thus minimizing the misuse of electric power consumption in public areas. It also aims in the reduction of manual workload by tracking the data automatically. The paper mainly focuses on the implementation of the concept using Internet of Things (IoT) as the underlying framework to achieve real time monitoring through Raspberry pi board.

GenEvaPa: A generic evaporation package for modeling evaporation in molecular dynamics simulations

This work presents a novel general tool for modeling the process of evaporation without the need for modifying existing software using python. The tool was developed based on the MDAnalysis package, which is used to import a Molecular Dynamics trajectory. The tool then removes solvent molecules and outputs a new structure file to be used for further simulation and analysis. This process is designed to be iterated by using the resulting dynamic simulation trajectory as the input file. The evaporation is designed to randomly delete solvent molecules while preserving solvation shells around solutes. The evaporation rate can be controlled by the length of the MD simulations and the number of particles removed between dynamic simulations. Validity of the tool was tested extensively using the Gromacs suite. Advantages of this tool include its genericness, simplicity and user friendliness, as no significant modification of existing software platform or Gromacs specific tools are needed. The production of designer-length tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) nanorods in plants has been problematic in terms of yields, particularly when modified coat protein subunits are incorporated. To address this, we have investigated the use of a replicating potato virus X-based vector (pEff) to express defined length nanorods containing either wild-type or modified versions of the TMV coat protein. This system has previously been shown to be an efficient method for producing virus-like particles of filamentous plant viruses. The length of the resulting TMV nanorods can be controlled by varying the length of the encapsidated RNA. Nanorod lengths were analyzed with a custom-written python computer script coupled with the Nanorod UI user interface script, thereby generating histograms of particle length. In addition, nanorod variants were produced by incorporating coat protein subunits presenting metal-binding peptides at their C-termini. We demonstrate the utility of this approach by generating nanorods that bind colloidal gold nanoparticles.

Estimation of evapotranspiration and its parameters for pine, switchgrass, and intercropping with remotely-sensed images based geospatial modeling

Intercropping switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) with pine can increase bioenergy feedstock production without land opportunity costs but can potentially alter water budgets. Measuring evapotranspiration (ET) and its parameters (stomatal conductance (g(s)), leaf area index (LAI), canopy temperature (T-c), and soil moisture (SM)) across cropping systems is costly and time-consuming. However, interpretation of remotely-sensed data can facilitate the effective assessment of relative ET demands among competing forest landuses. This study develops and tests geospatial models informed by a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), vegetation vigor index (VVI), and other spectral information to estimate ET and its parameters, which are measured on experimental watersheds with young pines and natural understory (YP), switchgrass only (SG), and young pine intercropped with switchgrass (IC). The treatment watersheds were replicated on three sites located across the Southeastern U.S. in Carteret, NC;Calhoun, MS;and Greene, AL. Despite the growth inconsistency for the SG only treatment, remote modeling estimation of ET parameters yielded an acceptable R-2 > 0.70, and the ET model yielded R-2 of 0.50 and a standard error of prediction of 0.94. However, ET and ET parameter model estimation for the IC performed somewhat less satisfactorily, with an R-2 of 0.47, 0.59, 0.56, 0.81, and 0.57 for ET, LAI, g(s), T-c, and SM, respectively, potentially due to inconsistencies in Landsat image pixel size and landuse homogeneity. Moreover, ET parameter models for the YP site performed rather poorly, with R-2 = 0.28, 0.63, and 0.76 for LAI, g(s), and T-c, respectively. Numerical characterisation of uniformity of fibrous networks

Basis weight uniformity can affect various properties of fibrous porous networks, including their porosity and mechanical behaviour. In this paper, a novel numerical technique based on the well-known quadrant analysis method is introduced to statistically quantify the uniformity of fibrous porous networks in the computer environment. First, four fibrous porous networks with different uniformity levels were generated with the in-house script. Then, uniformity was computed numerically based on basis weight analysis for various quadrant sizes for these fibrous porous networks. Uniformity parameter commonly used for quality control purposes turns into design parameter that can be used to optimise the microstructure of fibrous porous networks before manufacturing them with the developed algorithm.

Snow cover area analysis and its relation with climate variability in Chandra basin, Western Himalaya, during 2001-2017 using MODIS and ERA5 data

Glaciers and snow cover area (SCA) plays an important role in river runoff in Himalayan region. There is a need to monitor SCA on spatio-temporal basis for better and efficient utilization of water resources. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides less cloudy data due to high temporal resolution as compared to other optical sensors for high elevation regions, and its 8-day snow cover product is globally used for snow cover estimation. The main objective of the present paper is to estimate annual and seasonal SCA in Chandra basin, Western Himalaya, and analysis of its variation with elevation, aspect, and slope during 2001 to 2017 using MODIS Terra (MOD10A2) and Aqua (MYD10A2) snow cover product as well as to correlate the same with temperature and precipitation using fifth generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Atmospheric Reanalysis of the global climate (ERA5) data. The total average SCA observed is 84.94% of basin area during the study period. The maximum annual average SCA was found as 91.23% in 2009 with minimum being 76.37% in 2016. Strong correlation is observed in annual and seasonal SCA with temperature which indicate that SCA variability is highly sensitive to temperature.

Three-dimensional high fidelity mesoscale rapid modelling algorithm for concrete

This paper presents a novel computational algorithm to improve the three-dimensional (3D) mesoscale model of concrete, which provides several advanced features. As a key aspect, the traditional background mesh mapping method and material identification algorithms are ameliorated to make concrete model more consistent with its actual mesoscopic characteristics. Moreover, manual modelling and secondary development for modelling by ABAQUS/CAE are avoided because the finite element model is implemented by python script, which executed multiple tasks such as randomly modelling, meshing model, extract or output model information etc. The proposed algorithm prominently reduces the time consumption in modelling compared with ordinary mesoscopic modelling process. Finally, the reliability and validity of this algorithm were rigorously demonstrated by finite element case studies of concrete specimens subjected to uniaxial compression and uniaxial tension. It is noteworthy that this algorithm is an integrated framework for modelling materials of the concrete class as an exceedingly helpful computer-aided tool.

Vestige: Maximum likelihood phylogenetic footprinting

Background: Phylogenetic footprinting is the identification of functional regions of DNA by their evolutionary conservation. This is achieved by comparing orthologous regions from multiple species and identifying the DNA regions that have diverged less than neutral DNA. Vestige is a phylogenetic footprinting package built on the PyEvolve toolkit that uses probabilistic molecular evolutionary modelling to represent aspects of sequence evolution, including the conventional divergence measure employed by other footprinting approaches. In addition to measuring the divergence, Vestige allows the expansion of the definition of a phylogenetic footprint to include variation in the distribution of any molecular evolutionary processes. This is achieved by displaying the distribution of model parameters that represent partitions of molecular evolutionary substitutions. Examination of the spatial incidence of these effects across regions of the genome can identify DNA segments that differ in the nature of the evolutionary process. Results: Vestige was applied to a reference dataset of the SCL locus from four species and provided clear identification of the known conserved regions in this dataset. To demonstrate the flexibility to use diverse models of molecular evolution and dissect the nature of the evolutionary process Vestige was used to footprint the Ka/Ks ratio in primate BRCA1 with a codon model of evolution. Two regions of putative adaptive evolution were identified illustrating the ability of Vestige to represent the spatial distribution of distinct molecular evolutionary processes. Conclusion: Vestige provides a flexible, open platform for phylogenetic footprinting. Underpinned by the PyEvolve toolkit, Vestige provides a framework for visualising the signatures of evolutionary processes across the genome of numerous organisms simultaneously. The discriminant power of RNA features for pre-miRNA recognition

Background: Computational discovery of microRNAs (miRNA) is based on pre-determined sets of features from miRNA precursors (pre-miRNA). Some feature sets are composed of sequence-structure patterns commonly found in pre-miRNAs, while others are a combination of more sophisticated RNA features. In this work, we analyze the discriminant power of seven feature sets, which are used in six pre-miRNA prediction tools. The analysis is based on the classification performance achieved with these feature sets for the training algorithms used in these tools. We also evaluate feature discrimination through the F-score and feature importance in the induction of random forests. Results: Small or non-significant differences were found among the estimated classification performances of classifiers induced using sets with diversification of features, despite the wide differences in their dimension. Inspired in these results, we obtained a lower-dimensional feature set, which achieved a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 95%. These estimates are within 0.1% of the maximal values obtained with any feature set (SELECT, Section "Results and discussion") while it is 34 times faster to compute. Even compared to another feature set (FS2, see Section "Results and discussion"), which is the computationally least expensive feature set of those from the literature which perform within 0.1% of the maximal values, it is 34 times faster to compute. The results obtained by the tools used as references in the experiments carried out showed that five out of these six tools have lower sensitivity or specificity. Conclusion: In miRNA discovery the number of putative miRNA loci is in the order of millions. Analysis of putative pre-miRNAs using a computationally expensive feature set would be wasteful or even unfeasible for large genomes. In this work, we propose a relatively inexpensive feature set and explore most of the learning aspects implemented in current ab-initio pre-miRNA prediction tools

STSE: Spatio-Temporal Simulation Environment Dedicated to Biology

Background: Recently, the availability of high-resolution microscopy together with the advancements in the development of biomarkers as reporters of biomolecular interactions increased the importance of imaging methods in molecular cell biology. These techniques enable the investigation of cellular characteristics like volume, size and geometry as well as volume and geometry of intracellular compartments, and the amount of existing proteins in a spatially resolved manner. Such detailed investigations opened up many new areas of research in the study of spatial, complex and dynamic cellular systems. One of the crucial challenges for the study of such systems is the design of a well stuctured and optimized workflow to provide a systematic and efficient hypothesis verification. Computer Science can efficiently address this task by providing software that facilitates handling, analysis, and evaluation of biological data to the benefit of experimenters and modelers. Results: The Spatio-Temporal Simulation Environment (STSE) is a set of open-source tools provided to conduct spatio-temporal simulations in discrete structures based on microscopy images. The framework contains modules to digitize, represent, analyze, and mathematically model spatial distributions of biochemical species. Graphical user interface (GUI) tools provided with the software enable meshing of the simulation space based on the Voronoi concept. In addition, it supports to automatically acquire spatial information to the mesh from the images based on pixel luminosity (e. g. corresponding to molecular levels from microscopy images). STSE is freely available either as a stand-alone version or included in the linux live distribution Systems Biology Operational Software (***) and can be downloaded from http://***/.
