For non-native English speakers, learning programming presents unique challenges, particularly in languages like python, which heavily rely on English syntax and documentation. This study explores the challenges faced by non-native English-speaking Japanese university students enrolled in introductory python programming courses. A survey was held to examined various aspects of their learning experience, including their programming proficiency, English fluency, use of translation tools, and the impact of bilingual resources on their learning. Clustering analysis was employed to group the participants into three distinct clusters: beginners, intermediate learners, and advanced learners. Cluster 0 (beginners) had low programming experience and English fluency, relying on non-English materials and translation tools. Cluster 1 (intermediate) showed moderate skills, using bilingual resources and translation aids. Cluster 2 (advanced) had higher proficiency but faced challenges with debugging and code optimization. Our findings highlight the need for tailored resources to support students navigating English-based programming environments. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Utilizing python for numerical analysis of bioconvection in magnetized Casson-Maxwell nanofluid systems with gyrotactic microorganisms: An investigation of dominant factors

This study numerically investigates bioconvection in a magnetized Casson-Maxwell nanofluid with gyrotactic microorganisms using the Buongiorno model to analyze thermophoresis and Brownian motion effects. The Casson-Maxwell fluid model captures the complex rheological behavior of non-Newtonian fluids and the dynamics of microorganism motion. Boundary conditions and governing equations are transformed into dimensionless forms for simulation via python, using similarity and solve_bvp functions. Key findings show that increasing the magnetic parameter (Ma) from 0.1 to 0.5 reduces the velocity gradient near the surface by 20 %, while higher porosity (Pm = 0.5) decreases flow velocity by approximately 15 % due to increased medium resistance. Radiation (Ra = 0.5) and heat generation (Qm = 0.1) parameters enhance temperature profiles, raising the normalized temperature by 12 % at eta=5. Due to reactive species consumption, higher chemical reaction rates (Kc = 0.1) and Schmidt number (Sc = 10) reduce concentration profiles by 18 % near the surface. The Peclet number (Pe = 10) decreases microorganism density by 25 % over the domain, balancing advective and diffusive transport. The study highlights the magnetic field's impact on skin friction for Casson and Casson-Maxwell fluids, providing valuable insights into bioconvection in reactive nanofluid systems for applications in thermal management systems, bioreactors, and energy devices.

Automated numerical modelling for the control of EPB technology

Tunnelling is often considered an exclusive field of experts with countless years of practice mostly because of a grey area existing between design carried out with sophisticated theories and construction ruled by practical judgement. Despite the auxiliary actions carried out during execution are acknowledged to affect significantly the interaction between soil and lining, limited effort is made to analyse their effects with an appropriate theoretical support, often preferring to perform broad estimate with arbitrary coefficients. The present paper aims to establish a common field between designers and executors, trying to take advantage on one side of the increased power of numerical computation, on the other side of the accurate control of equipment nowadays available. A three-dimensional numerical model is then built to simulate tunnelling with Earth Pressure Balance, characterising with great detail the properties of the various materials and the geometrical and mechanical characteristics of excavation. The calculation is superintended by a script that automatizes the assignment of input and the interpretation of output, allowing in this way to perform repetitive parametric analyses. The tool is firstly tested on a real case study, a section of the MRTA project of Bangkok, then applied to quantify the effects of the pressure applied on the tunnel face and of the gap left between lining and soil. The calculation shows the time evolution of the mechanisms induced by excavation and lining installation and their modification induced by a parametric change of the main technological factors.

A Lightweight DFT-Based Approach to the Optical Measurement of Displacements Using an Open-Source python Code

Commonly available digital image correlation (DIC) tools are designed to evaluate displacement/deformation fields using well-optimized correlation functions and computational procedures. However, real-time monitoring at high sampling rates or tracking motion at predefined locations from large sequence images can be hardly accomplished due to extreme computational costs. As shown in this paper, a lightweight approach based on the registration of subpixel subset shifts using discrete Fourier transform (DFT) can easily tackle large sets of images if the measurement is limited to discrete locations. A simple open-source python software designed for evaluation of displacements using virtual extensometers is described in this paper, along with the analysis of its performance. It is shown that the DFT-based algorithms outperform a commonly used DIC package in terms of computational efficiency and required user interactions, without sacrificing precision and accuracy.

In this research, we present a python-based solution designed to simulate a one-dimensional quantum system that incorporates multiple Dirac delta - potentials. The primary aim of this research is to investigate the scattering problem within such a system. By developing this program, we can generate wave functions throughout the system and compute transmission and reflection amplitudes analytically and numerically for an infinite range of combinations involving potential strengths, potential separations, and the number of potential centers in the form of the Dirac delta - functions. Furthermore, by modifying the code, we investigate the so-called 'transmission resonances' which yields the energy of the quantum particles undergoing a perfect transmission. Subsequently, our research is extended by considering impurities in the system.

Numerical analysis of influence of intermediate stiffeners setting on the stability behaviour of thin-walled steel tank shell

Cylindrical bolted steel tanks with H/D similar to 1 can be made from very thin steel courses the thickness of which is determined by tension. The important issue is to stiffen the whole shell with intermediate stiffeners to prevent from stability loss in situations when the tank is empty and exposed to a strong wind. The FEM package Abaqus with nonlinear Riks algorithm was used for analysis. A parametric study programmed in python, internal Abaqus language was conducted to establish the influence of number and position of intermediate stiffeners on buckling resistance of the tank. After calculating nearly one thousands tasks, results were gathered with python script and compared with classic design recommendations proposed in Eurocode 3, DIN 18 800 Part 4 and AWWA D103-09. Simplified analytical approaches present in current standards are rather conservative and one may want to look for more sophisticated methods of analysis of tank shells presented in this paper for more economical design of such structures. From the comparison of the results obtained with different numerical strategies such as linear budding analysis (LBA), geometrically nonlinear analysis of perfect (GNA) and imperfect (GNIA) structure a necessity of taking into account imperfections in GNA arises. Otherwise a capacity of the shell structure may be overestimated even over the value obtained from LBA. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Experimental Studies of Autonomous Sailing With a Radio Controlled Sailboat

Autonomous sailing has attracted many interests from both industry and academy due to its great potential in oceanography, research and education. Worldwide researchers have developed various kinds of unmanned sailboat platforms for their specific research purposes and applications. However, most of these autonomous sailing platforms are rather complex to build and to program. The aim of this study is to propose, to build, and to test a new compact sailboat platform using a unique combination of a 1-m class radio controlled model sailboat, a Raspberry Pi 4, a Navio2, and a Calypso ultrasonic solar-powered anemometer. The proposed new sailboat platform makes full use of the agility of the racing model boat with minimal mechanical adjustments as the system does not use electrical wires to connect with additional sensors and a mechanical anemometer. The software architecture of the proposed new sailboat platform is also simplified as it involves only python programming for the Raspberry Pi 4. The experimental results have demonstrated the feasibility as well as the functionality of the proposed new sailboat platform to conduct autonomous sailing operations successfully and it could become one of the most accessible, generic and flexible autonomous sailing platforms for advanced research and education in robotics, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence.

A new approach for sensitivity analysis of the StormWater Management Model applied in an airport

Sensitivity analysis of urban flood model parameters is important for efficient and accurate flood simulation. In order to explore the problems of large sampling parameters and nonlinear correlation between input and output variables, this paper proposed a new correlation analysis approach. The type, strength, and the order of sensitive parameters to the four outputs are analyzed using the proposed approach. The results show that the R values of Manning-N are biggest, its distribution is linear in heat maps, and the Manning-N has a strong linear correlation with Average Depth, Hour of Maximum Flooding, and Time to Peak. For Average Depth, the second sensitive parameter is Conductivity;it has a medium nonlinear correlation. For Hour of Maximum Flooding, the second and third more sensitive parameters are Conductivity and N-perv;however, there are certain nonlinear correlations from heat maps. For Total Inflow, the R values of each parameter are between 0.021 and 0.534. Most sensitive parameters are none;however, the more sensitive parameters are Conductivity, N-perv, and initial deficit. For Time to Peak, the second and third more sensitive parameters are N-perv and N-Imperv;however, there are certain nonlinear correlations from heat maps. The results can provide theoretical guidance for application and parameter calibration of the StormWater Management Model (SWMM) in airport.
