A new GIS-based model for automated extraction of Sand Dune encroachment case study: Dakhla Oases, western desert of Egypt

The movements of the sand dunes are considered as a threat for roads, irrigation networks, water resources, urban areas, agriculture and infrastructures. The main objectives of this study are to develop a new GIS-based model for automated extraction of sand dune encroachment using remote sensing data and to assess the rate of sand dune movement. To monitor and assess the movements of sand dunes in Dakhla oases area, multi-temporal satellite images and a GIS-developed model, using python script in Arc GIS, were used. The satellite images (SPOT images, 1995 and 2007) were geo-rectified using Erdas Imagine. Image subtraction was performed using spatial analyst in Arc GIS, the result of image subtraction obtains the sand dune movement between the two dates. The raster and vector shape of sand dune migration was automatically extracted using spatial analyst tools. The frontiers of individual dunes were measured at different dates and movement rates were analyzed in GIS. The ModelBuilder in Arc GIS was used in order to create a user friendly tool. The custom built model window is easy to handle by any user who wishes to adapt the model in his work. It was found that the rate of sand dune movement ranged between 3 and 9 m per year. The majority of sand dunes have a rate movement between 0 and 6 m and very few dunes had a movement rate between 6 and 9 m. Integrating remote sensing and GIS provided the necessary information for determining the minimum, maximum, mean, rate and area of sand dune migration. Application of artificial neural networks for time series rainfall forecasting in the Loktak lift irrigation command area of Manipur, India

The primary source of water for irrigation and other agricultural activities is rainfall. It has an immediate effect on crop growth and productivity. Forecasting this rainfall in advance allows farmers to effectively plan their cropping pattern. In recent years, forecasting rainfall has become very popular due to the availability of the latest computation techniques. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are one such technique widely used for rainfall prediction by a number of researchers. These models are more reliable as they make better predictions because of their nonlinear data learning method. In the present study, an ANN model was developed to predict the annual, monsoon and postmonsoon season rainfall. The model was developed using 34 years of data from 1985 to 2018 in the command area of the Loktak Lift Irrigation Project in Manipur, India. The ANN model was trained using the rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation function. The 3-year input model excelled in all seasons, with the best model achieving a 0.36 coefficient of determination (R-2), 75.7 root mean square error, 0.60 correlation coefficient and 62.5 mean absolute error. These performance indicators were comparable with studies performed by other researchers. Thus, the model can be adopted for the study area.

Introducing a New Method to Convert a 2D Hand-Drawn Perspective to a 3D Digital Model

Nowadays, computer-models play an important role in the presentation of architectural designs. Despite the widespread computer advances, many architects still find hand-drawn sketches useful. Some designers use existing rules to draw a specific perspective view of the observer on the paper. In this research, the very first steps of this conversion are studied and introduced as a preface for further investigation into more complicated sketches. The authors try to use the python programming language to develop an interactive platform in Grasshopper. In this system, a 2D hand-drawn perspective can be imported and converted to a simplified 3D model in Rhinoceros software. By using various algorithms to correct the mistakes in manual design, this method can provide a complete 3D model considering the congruence of the actual drawing.

An empirical analysis of the transition from python 2 to python 3

python is one of the most popular and widely adopted programming languages in use today. In 2008 the python developers introduced a new version of the language, python 3.0, that was not backward compatible with python 2, initiating a transitional phase for python software developers. In this paper, we describe a study that investigates the degree to which python software developers are making the transition from python 2 to python 3. We have developed a python compliance analyser, PyComply, and have analysed a previously studied corpus of python applications called Qualitas. We use PyComply to measure and quantify the degree to which python 3 features are being used, as well as the rate and context of their adoption in the Qualitas corpus. Our results indicate that python software developers are not exploiting the new features and advantages of python 3, but rather are choosing to retain backward compatibility with python 2. Moreover, python developers are confining themselves to a language subset, governed by the diminishing intersection of python 2, which is not under development, and python 3, which is under development with new features being introduced as the language continues to evolve.

Chemistry simulations using interactive graphic user interfaces (GUIs) represent uniquely effective and safe tools to support multidimensional learning. Computer literacy and coding skills have become increasingly important in the chemical sciences. In response to both of these facts, a series of Jupyter notebooks hosted on Google Colaboratory were developed for undergraduate students enrolled in physical chemistry. These modules were developed for use during the COVID-19 pandemic when Millsaps College courses were virtual and only virtual or online laboratories could be used. These interactive exercises employ the python programming language to explore a variety of chemical problems related to kinetics, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, numerical versus analytical solutions, and real-world application of concepts. All of the modules are available for download from GitHub (https://***/Abravene/python-Notebooks-for-Physical-Chemistry). Accessibility was prioritized, and students were assumed to have no prior programming experience;the notebooks are cost-free and browser-based. Students were guided to use widgets to build interactive GUIs that provide dynamic representations, immediate access to multiple investigations, and interaction with key variables. To evaluate the perceived effectiveness of this introduction to python programming, participants were surveyed at the beginning and end of the course to gauge their interest in pursuing programming and data analysis skills and how they viewed the importance of programming and data analysis for their future careers. Student reactions were generally positive and showed increased interest in programming and its importance in their futures, so these notebooks will be incorporated into the in-person laboratory in the future.

An Open-Source User Interface Development for Widely Used Low-cost Spectrometer Designs

In this paper, the development and test stages of an open-source user interface are presented. The developed user interface is compatible with most of the low-cost camera-based spectrometer designs in the literature. The spectrum image of the light source that is acquired with the camera is cropped and analyzed in a real-time thread after interactive calibration which is a special feature of the user interface. Camera controls (such as brightness, contrast, saturation, exposure and etc.) are also available through the user interface. For user interface testing, a common spectrometer design that is composed of a light-guide tube with a narrow entrance slit in one end and an image sensor on the other is constructed. Various compact fluorescent lamps and light emitting diodes are applied as light source and the results are presented. Developed cross-platform user interface can be used with lowcost spectrometer designs especially involving a web camera.

Teaching machine learning (ML) to students with diverse backgrounds, such as those in the Master in Sustainable City Management program, presents unique challenges. Traditional programming-based approaches can be daunting for students unfamiliar with coding. Initially, software tools like RapidMiner, Weka, and Orange Data Mining were employed to simplify the learning process. However, this method often fell short in conveying deep ML concepts, which often resulted in a superficial understanding. With the advent of user-friendly coding aids like ChatGPT, a transition to python-based instruction was implemented. Additionally, the incorporation of active learning strategies has further enhanced student engagement and understanding. This shift has shown to improve comprehension and practical skills, evidenced by higher median and maximum grades on the evaluation tool, a final project. A multiple linear regression analysis suggested that performance in "Big Data" significantly predicts grades on the Artificial Intelligence module, and the teaching approach has a marginally significant impact. Subjective analysis by the professor, also proved a better grasp of the concepts by the students.

This paper proposes a project-based approach to teach and improve modern translator's skills in translation technology. Based on a three-level classification [2, 12, 14] of translation tools, it discusses the motivators and inhibitors of adopting current state-of-the-art translation technologies into a translator's workflow and the existing loopholes in workflow automation. Several translation scenarios in English-Chinese language pair are explored, such as Chinese term extracting, large-scale corpus building, mass process of structured language data, etc. It presents the initial finding that a high-level of workflow automation cannot be achieved with mere adoption of commercially available tools, and some ready-made tools have shortcomings like steep learning curve, high deployment cost, and hidden regulatory risks, Against this background, the paper turns away from the traditional tool-centered teaching and sets out to explore a meta-technology solution. Challenges and opportunities of introducing a digital "machine tool" technology, namely the programming languages, into the training of translators are discussed. The paper demonstrates how a translation-project-based python course can be designed and carried out to help translation students working in English-Chinese language pair. The whole demonstration constructs a closed loop automation for a modern translator's workflow.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence have led to the development of large language models (LLMs), which are able to generate text, images, and source code based on prompts provided by humans. In this paper, we explore the capabilities of an LLM - OpenAI's GPT3 model to provide feedback for student written code. Specifically, we examine the feasibility of GPT-3 to check, critique and suggest changes to code written by learners in an online programming exam of an undergraduate python programming course. We collected 1211 student code submissions from 7 questions asked in a programming exam, and provided the GPT-3 model with separate prompts to check, critique and provide suggestions on these submissions. We found that there was a high variability in the accuracy of the model's feedback for student submissions. Across questions, the range for accurately checking the correctness of the code was between 57% to 79%, between 41% to 77% for accurately critiquing code, and between 32% and 93% for suggesting appropriate changes to the code. We also found instances where the model generated incorrect and inconsistent feedback. These findings suggest that models like GPT-3 currently cannot be 'directly' used to provide feedback to students for programming assessments.
