Computation of dimensional variations on the structural analysis of multi-cell aircraft box beams with python scripting

Purpose python codes are developed for the versatile structural analysis on a 3 spar multi-cell box beam by means of idealization approach. Design/methodology/approach Shear flow distribution, stiffener loads, location of shear center and location of geometric center are computed via numpy module. Data visualization is performed by using Matplotlib module. Findings python scripts are developed for the structural analysis of multi-cell box beams in lieu of long hand solutions. In-house developed python codes are made available to be used with finite element analysis for verification purposes. Originality/value The use of python scripts for the structural analysis provides prompt visualization, especially once dimensional variations are concerned in the frame of aircraft structural design. The developed python scripts would serve as a practical tool that is widely applicable to various multi-cell wing boxes for stiffness purposes. This would be further extended to the structural integrity problems to cover the effect of gaps and/or cut-outs in shear flow distribution in box-beams.

Application of python scripting Techniques for Control and Automation of HEC-RAS Simulations

The purpose of the paper was to present selected techniques for the control of river flow and sediment transport computations with the programming language python. The base software for modeling of river processes was the well-known and widely used HEC-RAS. The concepts were tested on two models created for a single reach of the Warta river located in the central part of Poland. The ideas described were illustrated with three examples. The first was a basic simulation of a steady flow run from the python script. The second example presented automatic calibration of model roughness coefficients with Nelder-Mead simplex from the SciPy module. In the third example, the sediment transport was controlled by python script. Sediment samples were accessed and changed in the sediment data file stored in XML format. The results of the sediment simulation were read from HDF5 files. The presented techniques showed good effectiveness of this approach. The paper compared the developed techniques with other, earlier approaches to control of HEC-RAS computations. Possible further developments were also discussed.

Development of ABAQUS Plugin Predicting the Mechanical Behavior and Failure Modes of Weft Knitted-Reinforced Composites

The objective of this work is to create an ABAQUS plugin for predicting the failure mechanism, and mechanical characteristics of weft-knitted reinforced composites utilizing multi-scale modeling. This plugin facilitates the automatic modeling and analysis of weft-knitted reinforced composites, focusing on parameters such as stiffness, strength, and failure mechanisms. The developed plugin estimates the homogenized effective elastic properties of a user-created macro-model for a weft-knitted reinforced composite structure. The plugin correctly extracts the concepts of homogenization based on micromechanics parametric inputs of fiber and resin which are considered separately by the software's user. Afterward, the homogenized constants of the composites are automatically applied to the macro-model to achieve the most susceptible areas for failure after the localization step. It also enables the prediction of the composite strength and the identification of the sample's critical mesoscale regions. This paper also explains the plugin's homogenization and localization-based approach. Prior to carrying out parametric research, the simulation findings are verified using experimental data. Furthermore, experimental instances demonstrating its implementation and validation are provided. A comparative analysis of tensile characteristics between the multi-scale finite element model and experimental results disclosed that the model exhibited an overestimation of the failure strength in the course and wale directions by approximately 13%. Furthermore, the error due to predicting the tensile modulus in both directions is less than 7%. The results obtained from the prediction of the plugin revealed the approximate locations of failures within the composite unit cell under tensile loading in both course and wale directions.

A 3D RVE model with periodic boundary conditions to estimate mechanical properties of composites

Micromechanics is a technique for the analysis of composites or heterogeneous materials which focuses on the components of the intended structure. Each one of the components can exhibit isotropic behavior, but the microstructure characteristics of the heterogeneous material result in the anisotropic behavior of the structure. In this research, the general mechanical properties of a 3D anisotropic and heterogeneous Representative Volume Element (RVE), have been determined by applying periodic boundary conditions (PBCs), using the Asymptotic Homogenization Theory (AHT) and strain energy. In order to use the homogenization theory and apply the periodic boundary conditions, the ABAQUS scripting interface (ASI) has been used along with the python programming language. The results have been compared with those of the Homogeneous Boundary Conditions method, which leads to an overestimation of the effective mechanical properties. According to the results, applying homogenous boundary conditions results in a 33% and 13% increase in the shear moduli G(23) and G(12), respectively. In polymeric composites, the fibers have linear and brittle behavior, while the resin exhibits a non-linear behavior. Therefore, the nonlinear effects of resin on the mechanical properties of the composite material is studied using a user-defined subroutine in Fortran (USDFLD). The non-linear shear stress-strain behavior of unidirectional composite laminates has been obtained. Results indicate that at arbitrary constant stress as 80 MPa in-plane shear modulus, G12, experienced a 47%, 41% and 31% reduction at the fiber volume fraction of 30%, 50% and 70%, compared to the linear assumption. The results of this study are in good agreement with the analytical and experimental results available in the literature

Analysis of extreme flow uncertainty impact on size of flood hazard zones for the Wronki gauge station in the Warta river

In this paper, the impact of maximum flow uncertainty on flood hazard zone is analyzed. Two factors are taken into account: (1) the method for determination of maximum flows and (2) the limited length of the data series available for calculations. The importance of this problem is a consequence of the implementation of the EU Flood Directive in all EU member states. The factors mentioned seem to be among the most important elements responsible for potential uncertainty and inaccuracy of the developed flood hazard maps. Two methods are analyzed, namely the quantiles method and the maximum likelihood method. The maximum flows are estimated for the Wronki gauge station located in the reach of the Warta river. This simple river system is located in the central part of Poland. The length of the available data is 44years. Hence, the series of the lengths 40, 30 and 20years are tested and compared with reference calculations for 44years. The hydrodynamic model HEC-RAS is used to calculate water surface profilesin steady state flow. The python scripting language is applied for automation of HEC-RAS calculations and processing of final results in the form of inundation maps. The number of trials for each factor is not huge to keep the presented methodology useful in practice. The chosen measure of uncertainty is the range of variability for maximum flow values as well as inundation areas. The estimated values stressed the great importance of the factors analyzed for the uncertainty of the maximum flows as well as inundation areas. The impact of the data series length on the maximum flows is straightforward;a shorter data series gives a wider range of variability. However, the dependencies between other factors are more complex. Hence, the application of methodology based on the simulation and GIS data processing for assessment of this problem seems to be quite a good approach.

A user-friendly finite element model for radial mode abrasive waterjet turning

This paper aims to develop a finite element (FE) model precisely simulating the multi-particle impact in the radial mode abrasive waterjet turning (AWJT). An explicit dynamic analysis was carried out to predict the crater profile resulting from the impact of the abrasive particles along a limited segment of the jet pass over the workpiece surface. The effect of both momentum transfer loss and abrasive load ratio was taken into consideration while calculating the impact velocity of the abrasive particles. To build a user-friendly model, the scripting feature of ABAQUS was involved to automatically perform all the repetitive modeling procedures. The presented FE model considers four variable turning parameters tested at five levels each, including impact velocity, abrasive mass flow rate, traverse rate, and workpiece speed. The obtained crater profile from the simulation process was utilized to calculate the depth of cut (DOC) at different parameter combinations. A comparison between the numerical and experimental results shows a good agreement with an average absolute relative error of 9.74%.

Torpedo evasion simulation of underwater vehicle using fuzzy-logic-based tactical decision making in script tactics manager

An underwater vehicle such as a submarine or a torpedo is a complex and complicated weapon system composed of various systems and subsystems. Usually, it takes around 10 years, a substantial amount of money, and many research and development resources to complete the development of an underwater vehicle, right from the concept design to the mass production. Recently, in order to reduce the number of trial-and-error instances required for verifying the operation of an underwater vehicle, modeling and simulation (M&S) has been investigated and applied to an engineering-level simulation to analyze the performance of a system and a subsystem and to an engagement-level simulation to analyze the tactical and operational effectiveness. In this paper, we introduce a method for applying fuzzy logic to the tactical decision making of an underwater vehicle in an engagement-level simulation. In the scenario of an engagement between a light torpedo pursuing a submarine and the submarine attempting to evade the attack, the evasion methods for the submarine are modeled in fuzzy logic after tacticalization. For the simulation, we modeled a light torpedo and a submarine on the basis of DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification). Further, when a tactical decision had to be taken, the submarine model calls the tactics manager implemented outside of the model and passes its own state variables, which are necessary for tactical decision making, to the tactics manager. The tactics manager used in the tactical decision making process supports Lua and the python scripting languages and is self-implemented. The tactics description of the submarine was implemented using python scripting grammar and stored as a python file (*.py) to be inputted to the tactics manager. As the simulation results, we present the implemented fuzzy python tactic description file of the submarine evasion tactics and the possibilities of submarine survival according to the tactics as a comparison. Structural optimization of composite corrugated cores with variable stiffness

Outstanding progress in manufacturing technology of fiber-reinforced composite materials, allows designers to go beyond classical design rules. Composites with variable stiffness are an innovative division of composite materials that provide more efficient designs for engineers due to their diverse design parameters. In this study, a straightforward methodology is presented for the design of sandwich panels with corrugated variable stiffness core. Based on the homogenization method, a unit-cell of the sandwich panel is used as a representative volume element for the sandwich panel with corrugated core. Due to multiple design variables, conventional numerical and analytical methods cannot be applied to variable stiffness composites, thus python/ABAQUS framework is developed to determine the extensional and bending behavior of unit-cells. Details of this framework including python scripting and ABAQUS finite element solver are given along with their corresponding functions. Furthermore, the elitist genetic algorithm is incorporated into a framework for the optimum design of variable stiffness cores. Two optimization problems, namely composites with variable thickness and variable angle are considered for unit-cells, and associated constraints, boundary conditions, and fitness functions are discussed in detail. In addition to the benefits of the proposed framework, the obtained results reveal notable enhancement in the extensional and bending behavior of unit-cell. Results reveal that corresponding displacements are significantly improved (up to 80%) when using the optimum variable thickness case. For variable angle cases, the improvement of displacements is up to about 28%.

Extending a scientific application with scripting capabilities

Like many of us, your application probably started out small. you had severalsubroutines you used daily, and over time, other people started using them as well. the more peopleused your subroutines, however, the more changes and additions became inevitable. To satisfy allthe demands, you decide that adding scripting capability to your application was the answer, butwhat's the best approach? I picked COM (the Component Object Modelto implement scriptingcapability in Shvib for Windows. Shvib is a shock and vibration analysis program based on TomDerby's Fortran subroutines that I have been developing at Barry Controls. Freely and commerciallyavailable scripting languages abound out there, but after investigating some of them, I decided touse python as a scripting language for Shvib. Shvib has a Visual Basi6 GUI and several Fortransubroutines compiled as Windows DLLs to perform computations. Because Shvib is a Windowsapplication, COM was the natural choice to glue the Visual BasiGUI, the Fortran DLLs, and pythonscripting together.
