Reinforced angle brackets are commonly used as connectors in wood structures. These connectors are typically installed with ring shank nails or screws. This paper presents the experimental results of cross-laminated timber (CLT) connections which consist of reinforced angle brackets and heavy-duty screws. These screws are one of the stiffest and the strongest options for the fasteners which can be used with the reinforced angle brackets. However, this option has not been extensively studied by many scholars yet. Therefore, this paper contains detailed numerical simulations with aim to be able to predict the failure modes and the load-bearing capacities of experimentally tested connections. Benefits together with the limitations of the presented numerical method are discussed.

Vulnerable systems are a prime target for cyberattacks in healthcare organizations. This paper explores how automatic vulnerability scanning, triggered by network changes through python scripting, can significantly reduce the window of opportunity for attackers. We delve into the crucial yet challenging task of finding the optimal scan frequency, balancing faster detection of vulnerabilities with minimized resource consumption on healthcare networks. A risk- based framework is presented to guide this selection process. Furthermore, we address the issue of false positives in Network Traffic Analysis (NTA) and propose mitigation strategies to enhance the accuracy of threat detection. By implementing these recommendations, healthcare organizations can establish a proactive approach to network security, safeguarding sensitive patient data and ensuring the continuity of critical healthcare services.

The U.S. power grid is undergoing a transformation. Operational focus is shifting away from utilities with large centralized generators at the transmission level and moving toward individual customers who contribute generation from distributed energy resources (DERs) at the distribution level Utility-scale renewable generation, meanwhile, continues to span across both transmission and distribution networks. The current interconnection process for small- to grid-scale DERs is well-defined, time-consuming and complex. It involves studying every DER application within a network model to identify its impacts on the network, both locally and systemwide. New technologies and applications are expanding the use cases for the capacity analysis approach. which is radically changing how interconnections are evaluated. Rather than focusing on individual DER connections, capacity analysis can allow you to study nearly every possible interconnection scenario. By identifying and understanding the ideal locations and usage times for DERs - and optimizing operating conditions - capacity analysis is making faster approvals and interconnections. as well as higher DER penetration, possible. This presentation will cover recent implementations of capacity analysis performed for Southern California Edison.

ABAQUS plug-in finite element tool for designing and analyzing lattice cell structures

This paper presents the development of a lattice structure design (LSD) tool for building and analyzing different configurations of 3D-printed lattice structure (LS). This tool was developed via ABAQUS graphical user interface (GUI) based on python code. Due to the extensive research activities in the field of lattice design using experimental and computational methods, there is a high demand for finding new techniques to reduce the computational time and human effort. Also, several challenges were revealed while creating finite element models for lattices of complicated geometries. These models showed the capability for capturing the elastic and inelastic mechanical responses of LSs during the compression test. Consequently, the LSD tool was designed not only to build lattice structures in a short time and simple way, but also to analyze the associated compressive mechanical behavior that goes beyond initial yielding to cover the entire crushing behavior. This paper examined many challenges involved in generating and decomposing the lattice geometry, creating hexahedron elements and optimizing the mesh density, assigning and inserting the material type, activating the face recognition to define the boundary and loading conditions, and conducting linear and polar patterns. Finally, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new approach in designing and analyzing LSs, finite element results were validated with the previous experimental findings.

An innovative, fast method for landslide susceptibility mapping using GIS-based LSAT toolbox

In this study, landslide susceptibility maps (LSM) of the Akincilar region were produced with the methods of frequency ratio (FR), information value (IV), logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) by using a new GIS-based toolbox (LSAT, Landslide Susceptibility Assessment Tool). LSAT was used to assess the landslide susceptibility of the Akincilar region located 150 km northwest of Sivas city (Turkey). LSM was successfully constructed using five different methods for the study area. Area under the curve (AUC) values were calculated as 70.95%, 71.85%, 72.57%, 72.67%, 73.93% for prediction rate of FR, IV, LR, MLP and RF methods, respectively. Time-consuming processes are one of the significant problems of constructing LSM. LSAT can be used easily in this type of study and minimizes such problems. Data preparation processes, visualization of modeling results, and accuracy assessment of LSM could very quickly and automatically be done thanks to this tool.

FibrePlug-An ABAQUS plug-in for multi-scale modelling of textile composites

In this paper, a plug-in - FibrePlug - developed within the ABAQUSTM Simple GUI (RSG) and Fox GUI development environments is introduced. In contrast to traditional meso-scale modeling, FibrePlug provides an advanced user-friendly environment for simultaneously modeling fibers at micro- and meso-scales. With FibrePlug, the yarn level fabrics may be replaced by a specific user-defined number of representative bundles also known as virtual fibers. Further customizations, including the modification of the number of virtual fibers, are available within the GUI. In addition to the FibrePlug's microscale modeling capabilities, readers are also introduced with the beam and solid element discretization features within the plug-in and their implications to computational efficiencies. The feature of the plug-in's hybrid multi-scale model generation is also demonstrated. Furthermore, the accuracy of a uniform beam-element model generated with FibrePlug is validated by simple tensile tests performed with the 3D DIC equipment. Despite noticeable deviations in mechanical properties with respect to traverse direction, these properties are satisfactorily predicted along the loading direction.

Development of RiverBoxAn ArcGIS Toolbox for River Bathymetry Reconstruction

The main purpose of the present research is to develop software for reconstruction of the river bed on the basis of sparse cross-section measurements. The tools prepared should support the process of hydrodynamic model preparation for simulation of river flow. Considering the formats of available data and the requirements of modern modeling techniques, the prepared software is fully integrated with the GIS environment. The scripting language python 2.7 implemented in ArcGIS 10.5.1 was chosen for this purpose. Two study cases were selected to validate and test the prepared procedures. These are stream reaches in Poland. The first is located on the Warta river, and the second on the Ner river. The data necessary for the whole procedure are: a digital elevation model, measurements of the cross-sections in the form of points, and two polyline layers representing an arbitrary river centerline and river banks. In the presented research the concept of a channel-oriented coordinate system is applied. The elevations are linearly interpolated along the longitudinal and transversal directions. The interpolation along the channel is implemented in three computational schemes linking different tools available in ArcGIS and ArcToolbox. A simplified comparison of memory usage and computational time is presented. The scheme linking longitudinal and spatial interpolation algorithms seems to be the most advantageous.

Assessing the accuracy and efficacy of multiscale computational methods in predicting reaction mechanisms and kinetics of SN2 reactions and Claisen rearrangement

This study investigates the application of quantum mechanical (QM) and multiscale computational methods in understanding the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of S(N)2 reactions involving methyl iodide with NH2OH and NH2O-, as well as the Claisen rearrangement of 8-(vinyloxy)dec-9-enoate. Our aim is to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of these methods in predicting experimental outcomes for these organic reactions. We achieve this by employing QM-only calculations and several hybrids of QM and molecular mechanics (MM) methods, namely QM/MM, QM1/QM2, and QM1/QM2/MM methodologies. For the S(N)2 reactions, our results demonstrate the importance of explicitly including solvent effects in the calculations to accurately reproduce the transition state geometry and energetics. The multiscale methods, particularly QM/MM and QM1/QM2, show promising performance in predicting activation energies. Moreover, we observe that the size of the MM active region significantly affects the accuracy of calculated activation energies, highlighting the need for careful consideration during the setup of multiscale calculations. In the case of the Claisen rearrangement, both QM-only and multiscale methods successfully reproduce the proposed reaction mechanism. However, the activation free energies calculated using a continuum solvation model, based on single-point calculations of QM-only structures, fail to account for solvent effects. On the other hand, multiscale methods more accurately capture the impact of solvents on activation free energies, with systematic error correction enhancing the accuracy of the results. Furthermore, we introduce a python code for setting up multiscale calculations with ORCA, which is available on GitHub at https://***/iranimehdi/pdbtoORCA.

Design and Optimization of a Composite Canard Control Surface of an Advanced Fighter Aircraft under Static Loading

The minimization of weight and maximization of payload is an ever challenging design procedure for air vehicles. The present study has been carried out with an objective to redesign control surface of an advanced allmetallic fighter aircraft. In this study, the structure made up of high strength aluminum, titanium and ferrous alloys has been attempted to replace by carbon fiber composite (CFC) skin, ribs and stiffeners. This study presents an approach towards development of a methodology for optimization of first-ply failure index (FI) in unidirectional fibrous laminates using Genetic-Algorithms (GA) under quasi-static loading. The GAs, by the application of its operators like reproduction, cross-over, mutation and elitist strategy, optimize the ply-orientations in laminates so as to have minimum FI of Tsai-Wu first-ply failure criterion. The GA optimization procedure has been implemented in MATLAB and interfaced with commercial software ABAQUS using python scripting. FI calculations have been carried out in ABAQUS with user material subroutine (UMAT). The GA's application gave reasonably welloptimized ply-orientations combination at a faster convergence rate. However, the final optimized sequence of ply-orientations is obtained by tweaking the sequences given by GA's based on industrial practices and experience, whenever needed. The present study of conversion of an all metallic structure to partial CFC structure has led to 12% of weight reduction. Therefore, the approach proposed here motivates designer to use CFC with a confidence.

Heart is one of the most important organs in Human's body. In life, some changes may happen that may bring various diseases like, blood pressure, sugar, etc. Similarly, heart failure is also a dreadful disease. Heart failure is a serious condition and there is no cure for this disease. It is a situation in which the patient's heart is not pumping the blood well as the normal heart pumps. Heart Failure prediction is a complex task in the medical field. The rates of heart failure have been increasing day by day as the rate of population is also increasing day by day. This paper aims at analyzing the machine learning algorithms based on the percentage of various performance metrics (such as, Accuracy, Precision and Recall). The machine learning methodology is proposed. The most suitable algorithm for each metrics is predicted. It is analyzed using the specific variables in the dataset by using the python programming as well as different supervised machine learning algorithms which include, Decision Tree, Logistic Regression, KNN and Random Forest. Anaconda jupyter notebook is used for implementing python scripting.
