Efficient multimedia encryption algorithms are fundamental to multimedia data security because of the massive data size and the need of real-time processing. In this research, we present an efficient encryption scheme, called the RCI-qm coder, which achieves the objective of encryption with a regular qm coder by applying different coding conventions to encode individual symbols according to a statistically random sequence. One main advantage of our scheme is the negligible computation cost associated with encryption. We also demonstrate with cryptanalysis that the security level of our scheme is high enough to thwart most common attacks. The proposed RCI-qm coder is easy to implement in both software and hardware, while providing backward compatibility to the standard qm coder.

Two approaches for integrating encryption with multimedia compression systems are studied in this research, i.e., selective encryption and modified entropy coders with multiple statistical models. First, we examine the limitations of selective encryption using cryptanalysis, and provide examples that use selective encryption successfully. Two rules to determine whether selective encryption is suitable for a compression system are concluded. Next, we propose another approach that turns entropy coders into encryption ciphers using multiple statistical models. Two specific encryption schemes are obtained by applying this approach to the Huffman coder and the qm coder. It is shown that security is achieved without sacrificing the compression performance and the computational speed. This modified entropy coding methodology can be applied to most modern compressed audio/video such as MPEG audio, MPEG video, and JPEG/JPEG2000 images.

In this work, we investigate the nearly lossless image compression technique, which provides a better compression ratio than purely lossless compression schemes and has a better reconstructed image quality than lossy ones. In particular, we introduce a new idea called the soft decision quantization and integrate it with the binary arithmetic qm coder. Efficient encryption algorithms are essential to multimedia data security, since the data size is large and real-time processing is often required. After discussing limitations of previous work on multimedia encryption, we propose a novel methodology for confidentiality, which turns entropy coders into encryption ciphers by using multiple statistical models. The choice of statistical models and the order in which they are applied are kept secret as the key. Two encryption schemes are constructed by applying this methodology to the Huffman coder and the qm coder. It is shown that security is achieved without sacrificing the compression performance and the computational speed. The schemes can be applied to most modern compression systems such as MPEG audio, MPEG video and JPEG/JPEG2000 image compression.
