For some time I've wondered what "quality function deployment" means. Used asthe title of several books and as the subject of recent panel discussions, this phrase struck me asjust so much gibberish. Is it a military maneuver, or a mathematical function? What is itsconnection with quality? However strange the expression may sound, the concept is significant toanyone concerned with quality assurance. You would never guess the connection, but qualityfunctiondeployment or QFD is a proven management process for addressing the concerns of customers. Themethodology is designed to determine what customers like and do not like, and how best to meet theirneeds.
quality function deployment is a technique that identifies customer requirements and provides a discipline to assure that those requirements drive product design and process planning. The technique originated in Japan...

This study addresses the challenge of implicitly expressed traveler requirements in user-generated content (UGC). It proposes an innovative method to assist service managers in improving the quality of the overall service experience. Specifically, this paper employs the dependency syntactic analysis combined with co-occurrence information to extract and complete sentiment quadruples, addressing incomplete review expressions where travelers omit the subject or predicate. Additionally, considering the internal correlation of different traveler requirements, the quality function deployment (QFD) model is utilized to assess priorities for hotel service improvements. Taking 12 Jinjiang Inn Hotels in Beijing as a case study, this paper identifies 13 traveler requirements based on 9810 valid reviews. Moreover, the evaluation of 10 hotel service improvements reveals that "special catering" as a key area for prioritization and enhancement to add value. In summary, this paper proposes a method that uncovers travelers' implicit requirements from their implicit expressions and effectively fills a critical gap in existing research on service improvement prioritization by incorporating the internal correlation of requirements.

Developing starch- based food products poses challenges in achieving an optimal nutritional profile and functional qualities. Adding seaweed is essential to potentially enhance these products' nutritional and functional attributes. This study addresses the development of an analytical tool based on the Kano- quality function deployment (QFD) model to guide food product design teams and demonstrates this tool in designing new starch- based food products enhanced with seaweeds. The analytical tool is illustrated in two starch- based food products (i.e., fish crackers and fresh noodles) with evaluations populated by 14 experts while comparing the effects of adding seaweed on fulfilling consumer requirements. In the case study 1 (n = 172), 13 consumer requirements for fish seafood crackers were considered, with texture (0.1078), crispness (0.1053), and flavor (0.1038) receiving the largest aggregate weights. Among 21 technical attributes, frying time (3.4755), amount of seaweed (3.4258), and type of seaweed (3.3297) were ranked the highest. In the case study 2 (n = 159), 14 consumer requirements for fresh noodles were evaluated, with texture (0.1542), smoothness (0.1491), and natural taste (0.1432) identified as top priorities. From 12 technical attributes, the amount of seaweed (4.0418), type of seaweed (3.9465), and amount of starch (2.9025) were ranked the highest. In addition, competitive analyses of the starch- based food products with their respective competitors were implemented. Findings show that integrating seaweeds into crackers and noodles can significantly enhance their texture, flavor, and nutritional content, meeting key consumer requirements for crispness in crackers and chewiness in noodles. Such an integration can also impart a unique umami taste and boost health benefits, appealing to health- conscious consumers and providing a competitive edge in the market.

With the rise of individual consumerism, housing developers have increasingly recognized the advantages of mass-customized housing and offered customized units for target groups. However, overall building designs are often standardized rather than tailored to user needs, particularly in the integration of sustainable features. Accordingly, this study employed the Kano model and quality function deployment (QFD) approach to examine users' requirements for sustainable features and proposed tailored design strategies for mass-customized housing. After identifying 17 sustainable features through a literature review, the study analyzed 576 valid questionnaires using the Kano model to identify common and unique requirements across four age groups. The results reveal distinct priorities for different groups regarding particular features, including 'Well-proportioned units,' 'Rational building layout,' 'Livability,' 'Convenience,' 'Energy and water efficiency,' and 'Use of local and ecological materials.' Moreover, this study proposed 31 design strategies corresponding to sustainable features and categorized them into three zones using QFD, which serve as tailored solutions. This study recommends that architects gradually adopt these zones in mass housing to promote overall building designs in the move toward full customization. The study also identifies difficult-to-implement strategies and three relevant barriers, two barriers related to cost and supply chain that require government intervention, and one barrier that necessitates further exploration of users' willingness to incur additional costs resulting from these strategies. This research provides valuable insights into, and a systematic methodology for, mass-customized housing projects, thus promoting user-centric and sustainable living environments.

Jaggery, a natural sweetener made by heating fresh sugarcane juice, plays a significant role in India's agro-processing industry, particularly in the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. India produces and exports 313,826 BT of jaggery, valued at $230.03 million USD. This traditional industry, largely operated by rural farmers, has relied on labor-intensive methods for years, requiring significant manpower for tasks such as sugarcane feeding, scum removal, syrup stirring, and mold filling. One pressing issue facing this sector is labor scarcity, as the strenuous nature of the work often leads to fatigue. Among all tasks, filling the hot, viscous jaggery into molds is particularly crucial, as it requires constant wrist and finger movement, exposure to heat, and quick execution within a limited time. To address this, the study suggests implementing Low-Cost Automation (LCA) to make the jaggery filling process more efficient, safe, and hygienic. quality function deployment (QFD) was applied to determine the key engineering characteristics of an LCA-based filling system. A survey was conducted across 90 participants, including jaggery plant owners, technicians, and workers, from both conventional and automated units. The QFD analysis highlighted that factors like LCA implementation, dedicated filling setup, predefined dispensing quantity setting, low cycle time, and human contactless filling process are crucial for improving customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

The traditional failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) aims to define the risk priority number of each failure mode by multiplying occurrence, severity and detection parameters of each failure mode. Many studies in the literature commented the traditional FMEA due to its limitations such as equal importance degrees, discrete ordinal scales and multiplication of O, S and D criteria. This study suggests coping with these drawbacks a new method, which combines the quality function deployment (QFD) method under interval type-2 fuzzy set, Bayesian network and VIKOR method. The previous studies generally handle to rank the failure modes as only goal. This paper investigates concurrently the failure modes and the reasons of failure modes. QFD method provides us this benefit by employing customer requirements (CRs) and design requirements (DRs). CRs are the reasons of failure modes while DRs are failure modes. This study presents a new perspective to examine the correlations of CRs and DRs as linguistic terms by using Bayesian network. The VIKOR method deals with ranking the failure modes by aggregating the weights of O, S and D criteria. The developed method is utilized for risk evaluation of tile and marble works in building construction. The result shows that the most significant design requirement or failure mode is DR14 (unsuitable plug-socket utilization).
