An efficient maximum-likelihood detector for four-transmit-antenna quasi-orthogonal space-time block code

This letter deals with computationally efficient maximum-likelihood (ML) detection for the quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QOSTBC) with four transmit antennas. The proposed ML detector uses a permutation based real-valued equivalent channel matrix representation. As a result, the complexity of ML detection problem is moderated from O(2 vertical bar A vertical bar(2)) to O(4 vertical bar A vertical bar), where vertical bar A vertical bar is modulation order. Numerical results show that the proposed ML detector provides ML performance and achieves greatly high computational savings.

We propose 3-hop cooperative diversity using QOSTBC (quasi-orthogonal space-time block code) [1], which offers 3-hop cooperative diversity without signal separation in relay nodes. The key of our proposed scheme is encoding signal sequence in different signal unit according to relay stage. This letter explains details of the proposed scheme and shows that it offers interference reduction among streams and space diversity gain by result of simulations.

A full rate space-time block code (STBC) for four transmit antennas based on quasi-orthogonal design is proposed in this paper. The 4x4 transmission matrix of the presented quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QOSTBC) is constructed based on Alamouti's scheme. The original maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding scheme and the low-complexity ML (LC-ML) decoding scheme for the new code are introduced. Then the decoding speed of them is compared. The simulation results show: the performance of the new code is better than that of orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) at low SNR;it also exceeds the bit error rate (BER) of OSTBC at high SNR if the new code uses constellation rotation;the LC-ML decoding scheme is faster than the original ML decoding scheme.

In this contribution, the system of quasi-orthogonal space-time block coded spatial modulation (QOSTBC-SM) with minimum decoding complexity (MDC) is proposed toward linear detection complexity by utilizing the corresponding single-symbol decoding algorithm at the receiver. In addition, we compare the performance of the MDC-QOSTBC-SM system with different decoding algorithms in conjunction with comparing this scheme with space-time block coded spatial modulation (STBC-SM). Furthermore, we extend it to uplink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications and compare the performance with STBC-SM in the context of quasi-static flat Rayleigh fading channels. The simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme achieves a significant reduction in decoding complexity at the cost of a slight performance loss when employing the single-symbol decoding algorithm.

As a space-and cost-efficient antenna configuration, dual-polarized antennas are widely deployed in real field MIMO wireless communication systems. The quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QOSTBC), due to its advantages in the transmission rate and the decoding complexity, is an important transmit diversity scheme for more than 2 transmit antennas. In this paper, we investigate the performance of QOSTBC for dual-polarized MIMO channels. We show that when QOSTBC is used with dual-polarized antennas, we need to connect the power amplifiers (PAs) to the differently polarized antennas carefully, in order to avoid more than 1dB performance loss at high cross-polar discrimination (XPD). Also, we show that, if the QOSTBC with constellation rotations, which achieves full diversity in unipolarized MIMO channels, is used, the performance loss due to the bad PA-to-antenna connections is mitigated. However, when the XPD is high, the QOSTBC without full diversity, if connected properly, can achieve better performance than the QOSTBC with full diversity when connected badly, which shows the importance of a proper connection at high XPD. So, to guarantee robust performance of QOSTBC at any XPD, besides designing codes to have full diversity and good diversity product, connecting the PAs and the antennas properly is also important.

Distributed Differential quasi-orthogonal space-time block coded System for Multiple-Relay Networks

In this paper, we present an efficient distributed differential quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (DD-QOSTBC) system for multiple relay networks. First, we propose the DD-QOSTBC transmission which considers two robust STBC-like subsystems in amplify-and-forward multiple relaying over flat fading channel. It is assumed that source has two antennas, and relays and destination have a single antenna. With robust STBC-like subsystem structure, we show that our robust subsystems can be used for an efficient joint suboptimal differential decoding based on a maximum likelihood criterion. Finally, we accomplish the performance evaluation on the proposed DD-QOSTBC system in terms of bit-error-rate.

We propose a minimal BER power allocation scheme for a class of quasi-orthogonal space-time block coded transmission (the so-called ABBA system) over i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channels under the QR-based successive detection framework. Instead of relying on BER under a fixed channel realization, the design criterion we adopt is the overall mean BER averaged with respect to the channel distribution. By exploiting a distinctive channel matrix structure induced by the ABBA code we derive a closed-form upper bound of the considered BER metric and, through minimization of which, an optimal power allocation scheme is obtained. Numerical simulation shows that the resultant performance is almost identical to that of the joint maximum-likelihood decoding in the medium-to-high SNR regime.

In this paper, we propose a decoding approach for quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QO-STBC) based on array processing. This approach works with single symbol and can deduce delay generated by the decoder as well as the decoding computational load. In this scheme, signals transmitted via different antennas are separated by null space, and then they are decoded linearly. Numerical results show that with the proposed decoding method the decoding complexity of quasi-orthogonal space-time block code can be greatly deduced. With 256-QAM modulation scheme, the computational complexity of the new decoder can be lower than that of the traditional decoder with 16-QAM.

Single-symbol-decodable differential space-time modulation based on QO-STBC

We present a novel differential space-time modulation (DSTM) scheme that is single-symbol decodable and can provide full transmit diversity. It is the first known single-symbol-decodable DSTM scheme not based on orthogonal STBC (OSTBC), and it is constructed based on the recently proposed Minimum-Decoding-Complexity quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (MDC-QOSTBC). We derive the code design criteria and present systematic methodology to find the solution sets. The proposed DSTM scheme can provide higher code rate than DSTM schemes based on O-STBC. Its decoding complexity is also considerably lower than DSTM schemes based on Sp(2) and double-symbol-decodable QO-STBC, with negligible or slight trade-off in decoding error probability performance.
