The DEEP service is comprehensive new content discovery solution that offers fun, creative, modern way to discover information. Automated generation of content for DEEP relies on structured and unstructured sources of data and on multimedia databases. Unfortunately, using the Internet as a source for multimedia can result in the acquisition of so-called "Near Duplicates" - visually similar images. In this paper we propose an enhanced method of Near Duplicate detection for a special kind of photographs - images of celebrities commonly known as "red carpet" photographs. We have observed that near duplicates of such photos are most commonly crops of busts (head and upper torso) of the celebrity. We have combined an automated method for bust cropping with similarity computation and have obtained 95% sensitivity and 99% specificity for near duplicate detection.

The magnitude of data available on the web prompts the need for an easy to use query interface that enables users to integrate data from Multiple web sources in an intelligent fashion. Past work in the area of databases has resulted in different query interface systems that simplify query formulation. While these approaches reduce the user's effort to compose queries, the user is still required to pick data Sources to use and the interaction is not guaranteed to yield a non-empty result set. We introduce a novel approach that exploits the structure of the relational data source(s) to formulate a set of constraints. These constraints are used in conjunction with partial plans to produce all intelligent query interface that (a) does not require the user to know details about data sources or existing values (b) suggests valid inputs to the user (c) creates consistent queries that always return values.

We address the problem of retrieving chess game positions similar to a given query position from a collection of archived chess games. We investigate this problem from an information retrieval (IR) perspective. The advantage of our proposed IR-based approach is that it allows using the standard inverted organization of stored chess positions, leading to an efficient retrieval. Moreover, in contrast to retrieving exactly identical board positions, the IR-based approach is able to provide approximate search functionality. In order to define the similarity between two chess board positions, we encode each game state with a textual representation. This textual encoding is designed to represent the position, reachability and the connectivity between chess pieces. Due to the absence of a standard IR dataset that can be used for this search task, a new evaluation benchmark dataset was constructed comprising of documents (chess positions) from a freely available chess game archive. Experiments conducted on this dataset demonstrate that our proposed method of similarity computation, which takes into account a combination of the mobility and the connectivities between the chess pieces, performs well on the search task, achieving MAP and nDCG values of 0.4233 and 0.6922 respectively.

We present a query-by-example audio retrieval framework by indexing audio clips in a generic database as points in a latent perceptual space. First, feature-vectors extracted from the clips in the database are grouped into reference clusters using an unsupervised clustering technique. An audio clip-to-cluster matrix is constructed by keeping count of the number of features that are quantized into each of the reference clusters. By singular-value decomposition of this matrix, each audio clip of the database is mapped into a a point in the latent perceptual space. This is used for indexing the retrieval system. Since each of the initial reference clusters represents a specific perceptual quality in a perceptual space (similar to words that represent specific concepts in the semantic space), querying-by-example results in clips that have similar perceptual qualities. Subjective human evaluation indicates about 75% retrieval performance. Evaluation on semantic categories reveals that the system performance is comparable to other proposed methods.

One key challenge in talent search is how to translate complex criteria of a hiring position into a search query. This typically requires deep knowledge on which skills are typically needed for the position, what are their alternatives, which companies are likely to have such candidates, etc. However, listing examples of suitable candidates for a given position is a relatively easy job. Therefore, in order to help searchers overcome this challenge, we design a next generation of talent search paradigm at LinkedIn: Search by Ideal Candidates. This new system only needs the searcher to input one or several examples of suitable candidates for the position. The system will generate a query based on the input candidates and then retrieve and rank results based on the query as well as the input candidates. The query is also shown to the searcher to make the system transparent and to allow the searcher to interact with it. As the searcher modifies the initial query and makes it deviate from the ideal candidates, the search ranking function dynamically adjusts an refreshes the ranking results balancing between the roles of query and ideal candidates. As of writing this paper, the new system is being launched to our customers.

Summary form only given. A prototypical geo-textual web query takes a user location and user-supplied keywords as arguments and returns geotextual objects that are spatially and textually relevant to these arguments. Due perhaps to the rich semantics of geographical space and its importance to our daily lives, many different kinds of useful geo-textual web query functionality may be envisioned.

Three levels of feed forward information and five levels of feedback information were administered during a 200 two-cue trial experiment to 150 subjects. The feed forward information consisted of instructions on correlative relationships and cue validities. The feedback information consisted of outcome feedback presented at different rates. Results indicated that: subjects provided with a psychologically relevant MCPL setting with labeled cues can perform at a very high level of proficiency without feed forward or feed-back information; statistically naive subjects are unable to use feed forward information to improve their performance; whether subject performance increases or decreases when provided with feedback information depends upon the performance index used; and withdrawal of feedback generally has little effect upon subject performance.

This paper presents a search engine system for sensor time series data and metadata in the context of building management. It takes natural language queries as input and retrieves sensor time series data, ranks them with respect to their relevance to a given query, and visualizes the results as graphs. In addition, the system allows users to interact with the search results: they can define events of interest in the visualized results and search across sensor data for time series with similar shape, i.e. the search by example scheme. We leverage both a feature based cosine similarity model and DTW to find similar time series and rank them by relevance. Our quantitative evaluations and user studies demonstrate the value of this system for managing building sensor data.

We want to enable users to locate desired information in spoken audio documents using not only the words, but also dialog activities. Following previous research, we infer this information from prosodic features, however, instead of retrieval by matching to a predefined finite set of activities, we estimate similarity using a vector space representation. Utterances close in this vector space are frequently similar not only pragmatically, but also topically. Using this we implemented a dialog-based query-by-example function and built it into an interface for use in combination with normal lexical search. In an experiment searchers used the new feature and considered it helpful, but only for some search tasks.

This study examined the usefulness of self-appraisal (SA) as a technique designed to enhance the motivational and developmental impact of feedback from others. Drawing from research on self-enhancement and self-consistency motives, it was hypothesized that individuals would agree with and incorporate feedback that is consistent with their SA, whereas they would be more satisfied and perform better if feedback is more favorable than their SA. A field study was conducted with 122 MBA students as participants. On average, students were 25 years old and had 1.8 years of work experience. Seventy per cent of students were male and 82 per cent were white. The findings supported all of the hypotheses except the hypothesis concerning satisfaction. Implications for improving the impact of performance appraisal feedback are discussed.
