This article proposes a hybrid symbolic aggregate approximation and vector space model (SAX-VSM) method for automatically classifying soil water content cycles. In the proposed method, a novel similarity measure, the distance weighted cosine (DWC) similarity measure, is introduced to improve the classification performance of the SAX-VSM. The DWC similarity measure incorporates both direction and distance information of feature vectors. Meanwhile, a mixed-integer optimization problem is formulated to determine hyperparameters. An extended rao-1 algorithm, I-rao-1 algorithm, is developed to solve such optimization problems. To verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method, three soil moisture data sets collected from the Florida research trials are employed. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method has achieved the best performance based on all data sets in terms of the highest accuracy, precision, and recall values. Therefore, it is promising to apply the proposed method into real applications in the smart irrigation system.

A hybrid Retinex-based image enhancement algorithm is proposed to improve the quality of images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in this paper. Hyperparameters of the employed multi-scale Retinex with chromaticity preservation (MSRCP) model are automatically tuned via a two-phase evolutionary computing algorithm. In the two-phase optimization algorithm, the rao-2 algorithm is applied to performing the global search and a solution is obtained by maximizing the objective function. Next, the Nelder-Mead simplex method is used to improve the solution via local search. Real UAV-taken images of bad quality are collected to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. Meanwhile, four famous image enhancement algorithms, Multi-Scale Retinex, Multi-Scale Retinex with Color Restoration, Automated Multi-Scale Retinex, and MSRCP are utilized as benchmarking methods. Meanwhile, two commonly used evolutionary computing algorithms, particle swarm optimization and flower pollination algorithm, are considered to verify the efficiency of the proposed method in tuning parameters of the MSRCP model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves the best performance compared with benchmarks and thus the proposed method is applicable for real UAV-based applications.

The operation of the photovoltaic (PV) system under partial shading conditions (PSC) is complicated since the output characteristic of the PV system is profoundly affected by the heterogeneous irradiance of PSC. This paper proposes a dynamic reconfiguration framework to tackle PSC in the PV array. Continuous operation of the dynamic PV array reconfiguration under cloud-induced partial shading is considered by developing an emulator of the moving cloud. In addition, the Particle Swarm Optimization and rao algorithms are improved to obtain the optimal PV array configuration under PSC. The operation of switching is enhanced by simultaneously considering the total switching times and the operation of highly active switches. The simulation results on the 9 x 9 PV array demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in terms of reducing the number of local maximum power points on the power-voltage characteristic, enhancing power output, and relieving stress on the switching operation of the PV array under different PSC.
