Precise write-time compensation for nonlinear transition shift in magnetic tape recording using a d=1 rll code

We propose precise write-time compensation for nonlinear transition shift in magnetic tape recording using d = 1 runlength-limited (rll) code as a channel modulation. In this write-time compensation approach, the write current transitions having a transition within 3 bits earlier are shifted so as to minimize the transition shift of the readback signal. First, we precisely measured the nonlinear transition shift using a VCR. Next, based on this measurement, we simulated the effects of the write-time compensation, verifying them in recording experiments with a VCR. The results show that when the optimum read equalization is applied to the readback signal, this write-time compensation approach increases the eye height and eye width while improving the byte error rate by about two orders.

A simple, high-efficiency, runlength-limited code for digital optical or magnetic recording is presented. The parameters of the code are R=1/3 and (d,k)=(5,16). On the basis of that, this code gains a higher density ratio than any other used code. We introduce and investigate the class of bounded-delay-encodable block-decodable (BDB) codes. Several characterizations for this class of codes are given, and some construction methods, especially for one-symbol look-ahead BDB codes, are described. In another direction, we use our results to show the existence of a decision procedure for some basic coding problems.

Achieving FEC and rll for VLC: A Concatenated Convolutional-Miller Coding Mechanism

Run-length limited (rll) codes are widely used in visible light communications to avoid long runs of 1s and 0s that potentially cause the flicker. This letter explores the serial concatenation of convolutional codes and Miller codes to simultaneously achieve forward error correction and rll control. Miller codes with high bandwidth efficiency are much ignored in practice due to their disappointing power efficiency. The novelty of this letter is that we identity the merit of this previously unfavorable rll code (i.e., trellis structure and soft decidability), exploit some important coding principles (i.e., interleaved serial concatenation and soft-iterative decoding), and assemble it to a powerful turbo structure that makes it outperform the existing favorable choices. A modified Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv decoding algorithm is developed for the proposed concatenation. Analysis and simulations confirm that the new system is capable of solid rll control and a superb performance better than the existing schemes.

This paper introduces a run-length-limited (rll) (3, 11) code and compares its performance with that of the EFMPlus code using four different detection methods including partial response maximum likelihood (PRML), fixed delay tree search with decision feedback (FDTS/DF), partial response with decision feedback equalizer (PR-DFE) and decision feedback equalizer (DFE). The advantages of the proposed code are: (1) the larger density ratio and (2) the simple encoder/decoder.

A 4-ary run-length limited (rll) code with minimum run-length constraint d = 1 and maximum run-length constraint k = 2 is presented. The proposed code can be represented by a finite state diagram with two states. This is the lowest number of stares necessary for representing the code yet presented. A simple decoding rule for the code is also introduced and a scheme for reducing the DC content of the coded sequence in the sense of multilevel running digital sum (RDS) is discussed.

Performance of GPRML-AR system in perpendicular magnetic recording channel with thermal decay

The bit-error rate (BER) performance of the generalized partial response maximum likelihood with autoregressive (GPRML-AR) channel model system in perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) channel with thermal decay is obtained. The 128/130(0,16/8) run-length-limited (rll) code is used as a recording code. The GPR channel consists of the PR1 channel followed by the reduction circuit of predicted noise. The BER performance is evaluated by computer simulation using a thermal decay model. The model has been obtained by using an approximate equation that represents amplitude degradation of the reproducing waveform with elapsed time based on the experimental data for CoPtCr-SiO2 PMR media. The Viterbi detector with an AR channel model is employed. Furthermore, long-term degradation of the required SNR to achieve a BER of 10(-4) with elapsed time is obtained and the performance is compared with that of PR1ML system. The results show that the poorer the thermal stability of the medium becomes, the larger the SNR gain of the GPR1ML-AR system over the PR1ML system becomes. The correspondence describes a new technique for constructing fixed-length (d, k) runlength-limited block codes. The new codes are very close to block-decodable codes, as decoding of the retrieved sequence can be accomplished by observing (part of) the received codeword plus a very small part (usually only a single bit) of the previous codeword. The basic idea of the new construction is to uniquely represent each source word by a (d, k) sequence with specific predefined properties, and to construct a bridge of beta, less than or equal to beta less than or equal to d, merging bits between every pair of adjacent words. An essential element of the new coding principle is look ahead. The merging bits are governed by the state of the encoder (the history), the present source word to be translated, and by the upcoming source word. The new constructions have the virtue that only one look-up table is required for encoding and decoding.
