This paper analyzes the influence of the antenna orientation on the performance of Received Signal Strength (rss) based localization algorithms. Existing rss-based localization algorithms provide reliable results in environments with static sources of error. This paper analyzes the performance of three rss-based algorithms in an environment with the antenna orientation as a dynamic source of error. We first experimentally verify that the antenna orientation has a large influence on the received signal strength by performing an extensive amount of measurements. As expected, these measurements show that the signal strength may vary more than a factor five under different antenna orientations. This paper shows that antenna orientations may decrease the performance of optimally calibrated rss-based localization algorithms by as much as 32%, from 1.8 to 2.65 meter. In addition, it shows that improper calibration of the antenna orientation may decrease the accuracy by 64%, from 1.9 to 3.1 meter.

With the rapid proliferation of mobile users, the spectrum scarcity has become one of the issues that have to be addressed. Cognitive Radio technology addresses this problem by allowing an opportunistic use of the spectrum bands. In cognitive radio networks, unlicensed users can use licensed channels without causing harmful interference to licensed users. However, cognitive radio networks can be subject to different security threats which can cause severe performance degradation. One of the main attacks on these networks is the primary user emulation in which a malicious node emulates the characteristics of the primary user signals. In this paper, we propose a detection technique of this attack based on the rss-based localization with the maximum likelihood estimation. The simulation results show that the proposed technique outperforms the rss-based localization method in detecting the primary user emulation attacker.

One-to-one non-linear transformation for rss-based localization with unknown transmit power

For most of the positioning algorithms, based on the received signal strength, the objective function of the estimator is linearized so that the conventional least square algorithm can be executed. This would necessitate using a data model containing many noisy elements which implicitly violates the least squares assumptions. To avoid this violation, an optimized data modelling would have to be set up as shown in this paper. The authors then trivially provide the solution of this new least square problem which is still a primary coarse position estimation because of ignoring the non-linear relationships existing among parameters of the estimation. To extract quantitative information from these non-linear relationships, the authors also propose two new signal space points for using Taylor-series expansion as effectively as possible in accordance of the new data model. The proposed algorithms work without any knowledge about the transmit power. The performance evaluation of the proposed idea indicates that the new suggested estimators perform significantly better than the other existing linear position estimators for a large range of noise variance and path-loss exponent values.

The needs for location-aware applications are increasing with the popularity of ubiquitous mobile computing. However, as an important factor affecting the positioning performance, the deployment of anchor nodes has received little attention during the past years. In this paper we investigate the anchor placement in the received signal strength (rss) based wireless localization systems. An optimization method based on integer-coded genetic algorithm is proposed. It takes the average localization error and the signal coverage estimate as a joint optimization criterion. The influence of rss fluctuation on the system is also considered in the algorithm. We evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithm in simulations and the results are discussed in details.

In this paper, we propose a factor-graph-based cooperative positioning algorithm that uses rss radio measurements and accounts for the directivity of the antennas. This is achieved by modeling the directivity with a parametric antenna pattern and jointly estimating position and orientation of the agents. We propose two different approaches whereas the first one uses a continuous representation of the orientation state and the second one a discrete representation. We validate our proposed methods with simulations and measurements in a static sensor network with more than 900 agents in an indoor environment and show that the positioning accuracy can be improved significantly by considering the influence of orientations.

Robust Statistical Approaches for rss-based Floor Detection in Indoor localization

Floor detection for indoor 3D localization of mobile devices is currently an important challenge in the wireless world. Many approaches currently exist, but usually the robustness of such approaches is not addressed or investigated. The goal of this paper is to show how to robustify the floor estimation when probabilistic approaches with a low number of parameters are employed. Indeed, such an approach would allow a building-independent estimation and a lower computing power at the mobile side. Four robustified algorithms are to be presented: a robust weighted centroid localization method, a robust linear trilateration method, a robust nonlinear trilateration method, and a robust deconvolution method. The proposed approaches use the received signal strengths (rss) measured by the Mobile Station (MS) from various heard WiFi access points (APs) and provide an estimate of the vertical position of the MS, which can be used for floor detection. We will show that robustification can indeed increase the performance of the rss-based floor detection algorithms.

Energy-accuracy trade-offs for hybrid localization using rss and inertial measurements in wireless sensor networks

This paper presents a framework for optimizing the trade-off between energy consumption and localization accuracy in hybrid localization systems combining Received Signal Strength (rss) measurements with inertial ones. The proposed framework aims at finding the optimal operation point that minimizes the radio energy consumption for a desired target accuracy, or equivalently, the one that maximizes the localization accuracy for a given energy budget. To this end, the proposed approach considers the joint optimization of the localization frequency and number of rss measurements used at each localization round and leverages practical models to predict the energy consumption and the localization accuracy for combined rss-inertial localization systems. Simulations and real-field experiments are used to demonstrate that, for a given target accuracy, the proposed strategy entails a lower energy consumption than state-of-the-art methods available in the literature. This paper investigates the problem of estimating the location and velocity of a mobile agent using the received signal strength (rss) measurements. Typical power measurements are inherently nonlinear and in this approach we derive a linear measurement scheme using an analytical measurement conversion technique which can readily be used with rss measuring sensors. Power measurements are hence used in our robust version of a linear Kalman filter to estimate the dynamic parameters of the moving transmitter.

Recognizing the occupants' movement and locations within a home is a basic functionality, underlying a variety of smart-home services, including energy management, ambient-environment control, and assistive-living services for seniors and people with disabilities. The outdoor-localization variant of the problem is effectively addressed with the use of GPS;however, GPS does not work well inside buildings, which makes the indoor-positioning problem a very active research topic. In this paper, we report on a study of the indoor-localization problem, relying on easy-to-deploy, inexpensive, BLE-enabled stickers and beacons and WiFi access points.

Active received signal strength (rss)-based localization systems estimate the location of a device-equipped target by using the rss measurements between the target's device and a set of known-location nodes. To improve the accuracy of such systems, additional information from other devices such as inertial sensors or antenna arrays have been used at the cost of increased power consumption and complexity. Recently, rss-based device-free localization (DFL) systems have been developed that can estimate a human target's location using only the shadowing caused by the target on the radio links within the network, and without requiring the target to be equipped with a radio device. In this paper, we integrate the active and passive rss-based localization approaches to estimate the location of a single human target using a maximum likelihood estimation framework. Through an outdoor experiment, we show that the integrated method results in increased localization accuracy as compared to using either active or passive rss-based localization methods alone and without requiring additional sensors.
