PERFORMANCE COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO COMMERCIAL EM SOFTWARES USING HIGHER ORDER AND PIECEWISE rwg basis functions

In this article, numerical result obtained using two different commercially available electromagnetic (EM) codes based on an integral equation method are presented. One of the methods solves the integral equation by the method of moments (MoM) using higher order basis functions (the commercially available parallel software named TIDES), and the other one solves the integral equation by MoM with a multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) incorporating the rwg basis functions (the commercially available software FEKO). Numerical results indicate that the integral equation solver with higher order basis functions occupies less than 40% of the RAM and the execution little is significantly less when compared with that of using the rwg basis functions along with MLFMA. In this article, the spectral domain method (if moment is utilized to analyze frequency selective surface with rwg basis functions for arbitrarily shaped metal geometry. The Fourier transform of the rwg basis function can be expressed in the analytical form and the fast convergence characteristic can reduce the computation time of impedance matrix. This paper presents a new integration algorithm for the rapid and accurate calculation of the near field of a current expressed in terms of Rao-Wilton-Glisson (rwg) functions. In this algorithm the vectors in the integrand are transformed into scalars and the exponential functions and square root functions are eliminated. This results in an algorithm more than three times as fast as the traditional Gaussian quadrature.

Highly accurate and efficient cubatures based on the double exponential quadrature rules are presented for the computation of weakly singular integrals arising in Galerkin mixed potential integral equation formulations. Due to their unique ability to handle non-smooth kernels, the proposed integration schemes can safely replace (in a "plug-n-play" sense) the traditional Gauss-Legendre rules in the existing singularity cancellation and singularity subtraction methods. Numerical examples using rwg basis functions confirm the excellent performance of the proposed method.

Implementation of loop co-tree basis functions for EFIE formulation at low frequency

In this study, a method of moments (MoM) of electric field integral equation (EFIE) formulation using the loop co-tree basis functions has been implemented, analysed, and applied to the electromagnetic solution of perfect electric conducting objects at low frequency. The EFIE with Rao-Wilton-Glisson (rwg) basis functions suffer from low-frequency instability. Even for an appropriate frequency, the EFIE with rwg basis functions is ill-posed. However, the matrix form of the EFIE with loop co-tree basis functions is well-conditioned when combined with an iterative solver such as a type of Krylov subspace methods. The approach is shown to be very effective for resolving both the low-frequency instability and the ill-condition of the MoM matrix with a generalised minimal residual method.

A New Method of Moments Solution Procedure to Solve Electrically Large Electromagnetic Scattering Problems

In this work, we present a new method of moments solution procedure for calculating acoustic/electromagnetic scattering and radiation by a metallic body whose physical dimension is very large with respect to wavelength. The specially computed basis functions and the testing procedure results in a block-diagonally-dominant moment matrix where each block along the diagonal corresponds to a portion of the structure. The new solution procedure results in considerable savings in terms of computer storage and processing times. Although the procedure is outlined in general mathematical terms, the numerical results are presented only for electromagnetic scattering from two-dimensional bodies and compared with the classical method of moments solution procedure. However, the procedure is the same for three-dimensional bodies and scatteiing/radiation phenomenon.

Effects of gaps and bypass capacitors on interconnect of PCB with multilayered geometry

A microstrip with gap discontinuity and bypass capacitors on the ground plane for interconnects in multilayered digital circuits is analysed. The approach is based on integral equations using the spatial-domain magnetic field Green's function in a layered medium. The method of moment solution is obtained with rwg basis functions and Galerkin testing. The method is applied to gaps with bypass capacitors in single and double layer structures. Simulation results are obtained. pass capacitors and for the case of a second reference plane. The for various values and locations of bypass capacitors and for the case of a second reference plane. The effects of bypass capacitors and a second reference plane are analysed based on the simulation result. Numerical results give a quantitative description of the reduction in inductance created by the gap with bypass capacitors and a second reference plane.

Wearable and whole body antennas have received much interest recently due to the introduction of personal communication technology. Demand for new antenna technologies increases dramatically during next years. This paper presents the modelling of a novel fleece fabric GPS antenna for smart clothes. The modelling is based on EFIE formulation where rwg basis functions are used to approximate surface current density of an antenna. The GPS antenna is manufactured on fleece fabric and conductive parts are made of aracon fabric. This is the first full-fabric antenna ever made for commercial smart clothing. Simulation results are verified in practice which agreed very well.

In the solution of electric-field integral equation (EFIE) by the method of moment (MOM) on discretized planar triangles, singularities emerge in the inner integrals on the basis functions. In this paper, formulas for the singularity extraction of EFIE in the application of near-field measurement of antennas are systematically developed and presented. The simulations and measurements are performed to compare the results with and without singularity extraction. The results confirm the validity and accuracy of the proposed method.
