In this paper, we consider the problem of distributed compression of correlated sources with action-dependent joint distribution. This setup is an extension of the SlepianWolf model, but where actions taken by the encoder or the decoder and affect the generation of one of the sources. In both cases, we characterize the set of achievable rates completely, and show how the actions in the system affect the rate region in a nontrivial manner. We further study a network coding problem in a general network setup with two sources and one destination, where actions are taken at the encoder. In this case, we derive generalized cut-set bounds, and characterize the set of achievable rates using single letter expressions.

With the exponential growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), people now expect every household appliance to be smart and connected. At the same time, smart- phones have become ubiquitous in our daily life. Their continuous performance improvement and their compatibility with a broad range of radio protocols as WiFi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Near Field Communication (NFC) make them the most convenient way to interact with these smart objects. However, provid- ing wireless connectivity with BLE or NFC means adding an extra chipset and an antenna, increasing the object size and price. Also, this kind of hardware modifi- cation is not without impact: even if the radio chip cost is negligible for a single unit, it may become huge when millions of products are sold. On the other hand, previous works already have demonstrated the possibility of receiving information through visible light using an unmodified smartphone thanks to its camera. Also, LED-to-LED communication for smart devices like toys has been shown previously. However, past efforts in light-emitting diode (LED) to camera communication for IoT device-to-device communication have been limited. In this work, we address this question and design LightIoT, a bidirectional visible-light communication (VLC) system between a low-cost, low-power colored LED that is part of an IoT device and an off-the-shelf smartphone. The IoT device is thus able to send and receive information through its LED, while the smart- phone uses its camera to receive data and its flashlight to send information. We implement and experimentally evaluate a LED-to-camera VLC system, de- signed specifically for small LEDs. The proposed solution exploits the rolling shutter effect of unmodified smartphone cameras and an original decoding al- gorithm, achieving a throughput of nearly 2 kb/s in ordinary illumination condi- tions. Recent research shows that random linear network coding is adapted into current network systems to provide transmission reliability. In lossy environments, like wireless networks, a redundancy control is also needed to mitigate losses. Some implementations suggest adding a fixed amount of redundant packets per batch. This solution poses the risk of wasting bandwidth by over-redundancy or unsuccessful decoding due to packet insufficiency, dramatically degrading the performance. In this paper, we present the Adaptive Redundancy Control for Network coding (ARC) that adds redundant packets dynamically to mitigate losses. First, ARC is based on the use of MAC acknowledgements as a feedback on the state of link quality. Second, instead of determining the correct number of redundant packets, we decide to find the suitable time to send the redundant packets to cover losses. We design the multi-batch coding scheme that continuously streams new packets while interpreting the received MAC acknowledgements as the feedback on the state of link quality. The state of link quality will be rechecked before every transmission to deduct if it is appropriate for pumping the redundant packets or transmitting the new data. We implemented and compared ARC with 802.11 and FRC - Fixed Redundancy Control in NS-2. Results show that ARC outperforms 802.11 and FRC.

Optimizing efficiency of P2P content distribution with network coding: Principles, challenges, and future directions

Network coding technology has opened new avenues for enhancing networking applications. Peer -to -peer (P2P) content distribution stands as a particularly promising application domain where network coding can effectively reduce network load and transmission time. However, the additional complexity introduced by coding operations raises questions about the trade-offs and overall cost-benefit analysis of applying network coding technology in real -world scenarios. Besides, the inconsistent presentation of network coding concepts and terminologies in the literature necessitates a comprehensive examination and a consolidated summary on the topic. This study explores nearly two decades of the network coding -based applications in P2P content distribution literature by conducting a systematic review that extracts and analyzes data from 41 carefully selected studies with the aim to address specific research questions that will reveal the potential practical benefits of network coding and highlight its associated challenges. Given the diverse nature of how encoders and decoders operate, this review identifies three distinct data preparation structures for coding operations: single -generation, multi -generation, and multi -generations with overlapping. Additionally, this study provides a comprehensive categorization and in-depth discussion of the four identified network coding schemes: deterministic coding, complete coding, sparse coding, and sliding -window coding. Considering the vast array of network coding implementation options, this study presents and discusses which programming libraries, Galois fields, packet sizes, generation sizes, and file sizes are employed in the literature. Furthermore, the metrics used for evaluating network coding -based systems are enumerated and categorized, and the reported evaluation results are presented. Optimal transmission for scalable video coded streaming in cellular wireless networks with the cooperation of local peer-to-peer network

We study the problem of transmitting scalable video coded streams in a hybrid scenario including a global cellular network and a local peer-to-peer network. Given desirable channel condition in cellular downlink, some cellular user equipments can fetch the video chunks via the cellular base station directly, and also provide relay service via the local peer-to-peer network for other user equipments unable to meet their basic video quality. To take the advantage of channel diversity gains, the method of random linear coding is adopted to generate linear combinations of the video chunks for transmission in both the cellular and peer-to-peer networks. To optimize the cellular and peer-to-peer transmission arrangement, we first formulate it as a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem, which becomes more complicated when the number of user equipments increases. Then, we convert it to a quasi-convex optimization problem by approximating the indicator function with a continuous step function, and it can be solved by a centralized approach. Furthermore, a primal-dual decomposition approach is developed and a distributed algorithm is proposed accordingly. Simulation results show that the proposed approach achieves a near-optimal solution.

Wireless sensor networks have been widely used for surveillance in harsh environments. In many such applications, the environmental data are continuously sensed, and data collection by a server is only performed occasionally. Hence, the sensor nodes have to temporarily store the data, and provide easy and on-hand access for the most updated data when the server approaches. Given the expensive server-to-sensor communications, the large amount of sensors and the limited storage space at each tiny sensor, continuous data collection becomes a challenging problem. In this article, we present partial network coding (PNC) as a generic tool for these applications. PNC generalizes the existing network coding (NC) paradigm, an elegant solution for ubiquitous data distribution and collection. Yet PNC allows efficient storage replacement for continuous data, which is a deficiency of the conventional NC. We prove that the performance of PNC is quite close to NC, except for a sub-linear overhead on storage and communications. We then address a set of practical concerns toward PNC-based continuous data collection in sensor networks. Its feasibility and superiority are further demonstrated through simulation results.

In this paper the rank criterion of realizing the maximum information transmission based on the topology of encoding nodes is first derived. Then the Vandermonde matrix-based distributed random network coding approach is proposed, which can both reduce the computational complexity of coding matrix and increase the rank of it. The implementation of the proposed approach is discussed. Simulation results show that the proposed method is more efficient and effective than the classical random distributed network coding method.

Despite their high computational complexity, random linear Network coding (RLNC) techniques have been shown to offer a good robustness against packet erasure wireless channels. Some approaches have been recently proposed to reduce such computational burden, for both encoder and decoder elements. One of those approaches are the so-called Tunable Sparse Network coding (TSNC) techniques, which advocate limiting the number of packets that are combined to build a coded packet. They also propose dynamically adapting the corresponding sparsity level, as the transmission evolves, although an optimum tuning policy has not been yet found. In this paper we present a TSNC implementation that exploits a novel analytical model to estimate the probability of generating an innovative packet (linearly independent combination), given the current status at the decoder. Taking advantage of the model's accuracy, the proposed scheme offers a better trade-off between computational complexity and network performance. Furthermore, we broaden the analysis of TSNC techniques by thoroughly assessing their behavior over wireless networks using the ns-3 platform. The results yield a remarkable complexity reduction (approximate to 3.33x less complexity), without jeopardizing network performance.

Rising consumption of on-demand video streaming content has triggered significant research efforts to provide good quality content delivery with low wait-times for users while playback. Since, most internet-based streaming services use HTTP that runs on the Transmit Control Protocol (TCP), our focus is on providing low end-to-end delay while streaming video with TCP as the transport layer. To that end, a random linear coding-based set of enhancements to TCP's flow control called "Variable Bucket Size Network coding (VBNC)" are proposed and the impact of those modifications across different routing protocols are studied for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). The VBNC enhancements to TCP address the issue of TCP's agnostic flow control with respect to the arriving traffic at the source and also handle the conservative approach towards flow control. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in ns-3 and the system performance is compared from the perspective of congestion window evolution, video end-to-end delay and video goodput. Our evaluation shows that without significant changes in the network stack, our algorithm is compatible with the currently widely used OLSR and AODV routing protocols and offers almost a 100% improvement in video goodput over TCP New Reno.
