Integrating rapid application development Courses into Higher Education Curricula

As the development of technology and business improvement is rapidly advancing these days, higher education (HE) should continually provide and develop up-to-date knowledge and skills for students. This is crucial for training competitive specialists, addressing digital transformation and enhancing digital readiness of HE institutions, as well as increasing students' employment opportunities. Therefore, this paper explores the development and implementation of the new courses for teaching rapid application development (RAD) on the Oracle application Express platform at five European universities. Consequently, a new and flexible methodology for the integration of developed courses into existing study programs with different integration strategies is proposed and implemented. The effectiveness of the courses' integration, implementation and students' satisfaction were evaluated using Kirkpatrick's model. The results reveal that students' knowledge of RAD increased after completing the courses, which can improve students' employment opportunities and promote digital transformation in HE institutions and studies. In addition, a majority of the students expressed positive feedback for both modules, finding the courses relevant, well delivered and motivating for future study. This study and its results are expected to inspire researchers, teachers and practitioners for further work towards the digital transformation of HE and offer valuable insights for future HE digitalization and research.

Small units with specialised functions often have difficulty in developing information systems because of their unique and dynamic requirements, the smallness of their applications relative to the large inter-organisational networks, and the sheer numbers of such units, especially in government. Personal experience with the difficulty of establishing a suitable information system has led to the development of a methodology for endusers to develop their own applications with only the guidance of information technology professionals (ITPs) - here entitled 'Small Unit Enduser rapid application development' or SERAD. A data base management system (DBMS) is used to manage data about 'focal objects' with status flags and queries/views at interface points through UDA (UserAction, DataEntry, applicationAction) cycles. The system which permits data entry almost immediately, not only eventually creates a full application, but also trains endusers in the process. The methodology leads ITPs and endusers through a sequence of exercises in systems analysis, tailored to minimise the time and effort input of ITPs despite the relative lack of IT training and concepts in endusers, with a view to rapidly creating dynamic, robust and sound information systems.

This paper proposes the concept, architecture, design and development of a rapid application development toolkit that will leverage on a persistence framework named PcrsistF, to subsequently provide an easy-to-use and customizable front-end web application development environment for software developers to perform rapid web application development. The proposed rapid application development toolkit consists of two main parts - RADEWeb and PersistF Configuration Wizard, to enable software developers not only to deliver their target web application within a shorter timeframe through an easy-to-use front-end environment, but also to achieve encapsulation of database access from the business objects of the web application.

As a country frequented by natural disasters, it is important for Philippines and its citizens to unite and work together in mitigating the effects of natural disasters. eBayanihan came from the term bayanihan which refers to the widespread Philippine tradition and spirit of communal unity and effort to achieve a common objective. Having information at the most opportune moment is key to saving lives and property during occurrences of natural disasters as well as providing immediate relief to the victims. When regular citizens take part in providing information to authorities that may respond to critical situations, more tragedies may be averted and more needs may be alleviated. Leveraging on the high penetration rate of SMS services in the country, eBayanihan Patroller provides a crowdsourcing SMS service that will allow every Filipino to provide the information needed for informed decision-making.

In this paper we consider the way in which two representational forms, scenarios and design breakdowns, which have emerged in the traditions of human-centred design are relevant within the recent commercial emphasis on rapid application development (RAD). RAD is a contingent approach to interactive software development that is characterised by large amounts of user involvement, incremental prototyping and product-based project management. Scenarios have become popular as an intermediate representation within the human-computer interaction and computer supported co-operative work communities. Design breakdowns have been suggested as a useful organising device and design technique within the co-operative prototyping literature. Both these representational forms are not currently utilised within the commercial RAD tradition. In order to detail the relevance of these concepts to commercial development, we describe the 'natural history' of one particular RAD project and show how scenarios, breakdowns and the resolution of such breakdowns contributed to the successful implementation of an information system within a small commercial organisation. This paper discusses an ethnographic study of a commercial prototyping software development project. A distinguishing feature of the development was its concentration in one span of time and in one room, with both users and developers participating. This gave rise to a working practice based around the use of low technology representations of design. The case study explores practical issues important for prototyping: time management, user involvement, everyday design representations and the development environment. The mundane nature of design representations facilitated user participation. The public representations of work on the walls showed the current state in design of different components of the system and facilitated collaborative activities. The case study was part of a larger research project (1995-1998) which investigated the commercial use of prototyping in the UK. The development was influenced by a recent trend in commercial prototyping practice, rapid application development (RAD). Implications of the case study for RAD and participatory design are discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A quality software process for rapid application development

Software organizations can significantly improve the quality of their output if they have a defined and documented software process, together with the appropriate techniques and tools to measure its effectiveness. Without a defined process it is impossible to measure success or focus on how development capability can be enhanced. To date, a number of software process improvement frameworks have been developed and implemented. However, most of these models have been targeted at large-scale producers. Furthermore, they have applied to companies who use traditional development techniques. Smaller companies and those operating in development areas where speed of delivery is paramount have not, as yet, had process improvement paradigms available for adoption. This study examined the software process in a small company and emerged with the recommendation of the use of the Dynamic Systems development Method (DSDM) and the Personal Software Process (PSP) for achieving software process improvement. 0963-9314 @ 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Due to shortage of time, most of the software organizations are shifting their projects to rapid application development's life cycle. But main problem is that rate of projects failure is increasing day by day. According to Standish group report, success rate of projects is only 16.2%. The main reason of project's failure is poor requirement engineering. The main objective of carried research is to purpose a model for requirement engineering process of rapid application development. The proposed model has 7 steps. Our proposed model specifies techniques for each step of requirement engineering process. Our proposed model also introduces new stages of conflict management by win-win approach and requirement prioritization by card sorting in requirement engineering model for rapid application development's life cycle. Validation of purposed model has been done by survey from 50 experienced software professionals of 20 different organizations. Survey proved that our purposed model has more customer's favor then traditional requirement engineering model for rapid application development. Our proposed model is fully customer's oriented. It is more time effective, cost effective, well managed and efficient than traditional model.

It is imperative that new solutions in Electronic Design Automation (EDA) appear to cope with the increasing complexity of modern chips. However, the lack of broadly available platforms for rapid application development (RAD) of EDA tools hinders the volume and quality of the contributions from the scientific community. In this paper, we tackle this issue by proposing a RAD platform for EDA tools that enables the contributors to focus on the problem that they want to solve instead of "reinventing the wheel". The proposed platform encompasses a user-friendly Tcl shell, a standardized data model, templates for quick creation of commands, a system-level Qt Graphical User Interface (GUI) and a user customizable Tk GUI, all synchronized by an event loop orchestrator with distributed processing capabilities. The amount of "boilerplate" code is reduced to a minimum in each stage of development. Finally, we propose the usage of a Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment cycle to reduce the efforts on distribution of the tools developed on top of the platform. The platform was validated with the development of modules for the design flow of mixed signal circuits.

Programming for the Symbian OS assumes that developers invest particular and uncommon work, therefore the development lifecycle is rather longer and the costs are usually higher than these of common C++ software development. Dealing with user interface, database or communication, programming is not so straightforward as expected. However, an appropriate developer tool can help the developers to be more efficient and solve the designing and programming difficulties. In this paper we will introduce a rapid application development tool set on the Symbian OS. We model the user interface and the statechart of the mobile applications with a novel tool (Visual Modeling and Transformation System). After this design phase source code can be generated. We describe a class library that helps the programmers or code generators to produce Symbian source code that is easy to read and maintain.
