Over the last 30 years, there have been dramatic changes in phased array coil technology leading to increasing channel density and parallel imaging functionality. Current receiver array coils are rigid and often mismatched to patient's size. Recently there has been a move towards flexible coil technology, which is more conformal to the human anatomy. Despite the advances of so-called flexible surface coil arrays, these coils are still relatively rigid and limited in terms of design conformability, compromising signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for flexibility, and are not designed for optimum parallel imaging performance. The purpose of this study is to report on the development and characterization of a 15-channel flexible foot and ankle coil, rapidly designed and constructed using highly decoupled radio-frequency (RF) coil elements. Coil performance was evaluated by performing SNR and g-factor *** vivotesting was performed in a healthy volunteer using both the 15-channel coil and a commercially available 8-channel foot coil. The highly decoupled elements used in this design allow for extremely rapid development and prototyping of application-specific coils for different patient sizes (adult vs child) with minimal additional design consideration in terms of coil overlap and geometry. Image quality was comparable to a commercially available RF coil.

We report a case of a fast-growing cardiac papillary fibroelastoma (CPF) arising in the aortic valve. A 71-year-old woman was referred to a cardiologist for investigation of palpitations. Cardiac catheterization, coronary angiography, and echocardiography showed no stenosis of the coronary arteries, nor any other cardiovascular abnormalities. However, 12 months later she was referred to our hospital for further investigations when she began experiencing chest discomfort on exertion. This time, echocardiography showed an abnormal mass arising from the aortic valve, floating between the left sinus of Valsalva and the ascending aorta. Considering the risk of an embolic event, we performed semi-emergency surgery to remove the tumor, preserving the aortic valve. The resected tumor was 16 x 7 mm, and sea anemone-like, with many villus projections. It was diagnosed as papillary fibroelastoma. Such rapid development of CPF is rare.

Several animal models manifesting lesions resembling neointimal hyperplasia of human vein grafts have been developed, but no spontaneous atheromatous lesions in their vein grafts have been observed. We developed and here characterize a new animal model of vein graft atheroma, a maturated atherosclerotic plaque, in apoE-deficient mice. The lesion displayed classical complex morphological features and heterogeneous cellular compositions and consisted of a fibrous cap, infiltrated mononuclear cells, foam cells, cholesterol crystal structure, necrotic core with calcification, and neovasculature. Cell component analysis revealed smooth muscle cells (SMCs) localized in the cap region, macrophages which made up a large portion of the lesions, and CD4+ T cells scattered under the cap. Importantly, apoptotic/necrotic cells determined by TUNEL assay in vein grafts into apoE-/- mice were significantly higher than wildtype mice, although a similar number of proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive cells in both types of lesions was found. Interestingly, vascular SMCs cultivated from aortas of apoE-deficient mice showed a high rate of spontaneous apoptosis/necrosis and a higher rate of cell death stimulated by a nitric oxide donor, sodium nitroprusside, H2O2, and oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL), although no difference In proliferation of both SMCs incubated with platelet-derived growth factor, angiotensin II, LDL, and oxidized LDL was seen. Thus, the pathogenic mechanisms of vein graft atheroma involve increased intimal cell death initiated by biomechanical stress and amplified by hypercholesterolemia, which leads to continuous recruitment of blood mononuclear cells to constitute atheromatous lesions. This mouse model resembling human vein graft disease has many advantages over other animal models.

For some years, the global research community has been developing techniques to rapidly design and develop information appliances. Despite significant advances, many industrial and user interface designers still rely on 2D, software only interactive prototypes, particularly early in the design process when many key decisions are made. A core assumption of many of those tackling this issue is that designers need to be able to make 'quick and dirty' 3D prototypes to evaluate their concepts properly. Some attempts have been made to examine how quick or how dirty the prototyping process can be for software only applications, but to date no one has carried out a similar exercise for 3D information appliance prototypes. This article presents the results of three experiments, presenting empirical data that determines whether tangible prototypes are better than software prototypes and how 'quick and dirty' designers should be prototyping.

Requirements engineering for no-code development (RE4NCD): Case studies of rapid application development during crisis

Context: In recent years, a new development approach has emerged, for rapid application development (RAD) supported by platforms that enable low or no-code development (NCD). This approach is designed for developers with limited or no coding expertise and for achieving a very short time-to-deployment. The requirements engineering (RE) and design phases are typically omitted during RAD, thus posing challenges in ensuring a rigorous, sustainable, and flexible application. Objective: To propose an RE method for NCD (RE4NCD) that would respect the limitations in which NCD is conducted yet ensure more rigorous development and outcome. Method: A participatory case study aimed to explore RAD processes as performed with the "Monday" NCD platform and, accordingly, to develop the RE4NCD method. This study was followed by multiple (non-participatory) case studies for the refinement and validation of the proposed method. All case studies focused on civilian management systems that were developed rapidly during a time of war and included qualitative data collection and thematic analysis. Results: The thematic analysis resulted in categories of RE activities to be included in the RE4NCD method, leading to its construction in the first case study, and its refinement and validation in the follow-up case studies. Conclusion: The paper highlights the theoretical and practical implications of RE4NCD, underscoring the potential transformative impact of NCD on the software development industry. It also proposes future research aimed at refining and validating the RE4NCD method, tracking the adoption and evolution of applications in diverse organizations, and applying the method to additional case studies for evaluation and validation.

Despite a slow beginning, coalmine bolting in China has got a rapid development in the past twenty years for pressing demand of deep mining, which has provided a sound technical support for safe and efficient coal production. In terms of technical characteristics, this process can be divided into three stages: "one- high" stage (high strength bolting), "two-high" stage (high strength and high pretension force bolting) and "three-high" stage (combination of high strength, high pretension force and high system stiffness bolting). Studies show that rational match of the "three- high" is safeguard to deal with the increasingly complicated deep mining situation. A whole set of strengthening bolting technology based on the "three-high" is put forward. The feasibility of its application under the most support-challenging condition-retained roadways is well tested by a typical engineering case. © 2009.

This paper reviews recent developments in software materials processes and fabrication tools that can enable a rapid transition from design modeling and simulation to fabricating cost effective test parts and prototypes for Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality displays. Using the approaches detailed here display systems can be laboratory and field tested in a matter of days after establishing design goals and production criteria. Robust and industry ready Imageguides (R) (aka planar optical elements) produced from this short run rapid design/fabrication cycle can result in directly printed one-offs for inclusion in evaluation systems or lead directly to the production of masters for additive NIL or etch masks for subtractive processes which are required for production level quantities.

There are many ways that learning metaphors from games may be harnessed in the construction of motivating and effective game based learning (GBL) experiences. However, significant difficulties exist in the creation of GBL software for use within education and GBL related research. Two of the primary difficulties, which provide the focus for this paper, are cost (both time and monetary) and quality. There is often a requirement to build specific games experiences for a particular research investigation that cannot be fulfilled through the use of existing COTS games. However, research budgets rarely offer adequate expenditure to facilitate the construction of bespoke games for learning experiences that compete favourably with commercial games. Additionally, within research teams the expertise and experience necessary for making games is often limited in comparison to an industry based team. This is further compounded by the need for experimental software to be completed before an academic term/semester starts. Failing this requirement often results in the experiment being delayed until the next academic semester or year. In this paper we discuss a short term project undertaken by a development team comprised of two academics and two commercial game developers. With only two weeks of design and development a game based learning solution is created and deployed over a five week period for a class of 2nd year university computing students. This work was intended both as a technological proof-of-concept and as an investigation into the students' reaction to the use of games to enhance their understanding of their learning experience. We report on our design and development experiences within a multidisciplinary team, and in particular discuss the use of Moodle and GameMaker as potentially powerful rapid development/prototyping toolsets. Although pressure compensating emitters (PCE) have many advantages, they are difficult to develop and very costly. Traditional PCE are composed of emitter structures and compensating diaphragms. Their manufacture is very difficult and time-consuming. In this paper, we invented novel PCE with variable flow channels, which are designed as integrated structures with pressure compensating barriers, and manufactured three of them with different structures based on the rapid prototyping/rapid tooling technology. The pressure-flow test showed their behavior indexes were 0.009, 0.008 and 0.011, respectively, indicating this type of novel PCE have remarkable compensating effect.

Compositional AI systems, which combine multiple artificial intelligence components together with other application components to solve a larger problem, have no known pattern of development and are often approached in a bespoke and ad hoc style. This makes development slower and harder to reuse for future applications. To support the full rapid development cycle of compositional AI applications, we have developed a novel framework called (Bee)* (written as a regular expression and pronounced as "beestar"). We illustrate how (Bee)* supports building integrated, scalable, and interactive compositional AI applications with a simplified developer experience.
