It is known that the Raptor code can be constructed to achieve a rate close to the capacity of the binary-input AWGN (BIAWGN) channel with a fixed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this letter, we propose a constructive approach of designing the Raptor code over the BIAWGN channel such that the achieved rates are close to the associated capacities for wide SNR ranges.

Efficient Resource Allocation in a rateless-Coded MU-MIMO Cognitive Radio Network With QoS Provisioning and Limited Feedback

In this paper, we design an efficient resource-allocation strategy for a multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) rateless-coded cognitive radio network (CRN) with quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning. We consider a limited feedback MU-MIMO CRN, where zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) is performed under imperfect channel state information (CSI) at a cognitive base station to mitigate both inter- and intranetwork interferences. To minimize the total feedback amount while satisfying the interference constraint and QoS requirements simultaneously, we propose to adaptively adjust the transmit power, select the transmission mode, and choose the feedback codebook size according to the interference constraint, CSI, and QoS requirements. The optimization problem is shown to be an integer programming problem, and we propose a heuristic algorithm that can provide an optimal solution for most practical scenarios. Results show that our resource-allocation strategy can decide the feedback amount and transmission mode adaptively based on the delay requirements.

Reliable rateless Wireless Broadcasting With Near-Zero Feedback

We examine the problem of minimizing feedback in reliable wireless broadcasting by pairing rateless coding with extreme value theory. Our key observation is that, in a broadcast environment, this problem resolves into estimating the maximum number of packets dropped among many receivers rather than for each individual receiver. With rateless codes, this estimation relates to the number of redundant transmissions needed at the source in order for all receivers to correctly decode a message with high probability. We develop and analyze two new data dissemination protocols, called Random Sampling (RS) and Full Sampling with Limited Feedback (FSLF), based on the moment and maximum likelihood estimators in extreme value theory. Both protocols rely on a single-round learning phase, requiring the transmission of a few feedback packets from a small subset of receivers. With fixed overhead, we show that FSLF has the desirable property of becoming more accurate as the receivers' population gets larger. Our protocols are channel-agnostic, in that they do not require a priori knowledge of (i.i.d.) packet loss probabilities, which may vary among receivers. We provide simulations and an improved full-scale implementation of the rateless Deluge over-the-air programming protocol on sensor motes as a demonstration of the practical benefits of our protocols, which translate into about 30% latency and energy consumption savings. Furthermore, we apply our protocols to real-time (RT) oblivious rateless codes in broadcast settings. Through simulations, we demonstrate a 100-fold reduction in the amount of feedback packets while incurring an increase of only 10%-20% in the number of encoded packets transmissions.

Efficient downlink resource allocation (e.g., subbands in OFDMA/LTE) requires channel state information (e.g., subband gains) local to each user be transmitted to the base station (BS). Lossy encoding of the relevant state may result in suboptimal resource allocations by the BS, the performance cost of which may be captured by a suitable distortion measure. This problem is an indirect distributed lossy source coding problem with the function to be computed representing the optimal resource allocation, and the distortion measuring the cost of suboptimal allocations. In this paper we investigate the use of distributed scalar quantizers for lossy encoding of state, where the BS wishes to compute the index of the user with the largest gain on each subband. We prove the superiority of a heterogeneous (across users) quantizer design over the optimal homogeneous quantizer design, even though the source variables are i.i.d.

A framework is developed for decode-and-forward-based relaying using standard coding and decoding that are good for the single-input single-output (SISO) additive white Gaussian noise channel. The framework is applicable to various scenarios and is demonstrated for several important cases. Each of these scenarios is transformed into an equivalent Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) common-message broadcast problem, which proves useful even when all links are SISO ones. Over the effective MIMO broadcast channel, a recently developed Gaussian MIMO common-message broadcast scheme is applied. This scheme transforms the MIMO links into a set of parallel SISO channels with no loss of mutual information, using linear pre- and post-processing combined with successive decoding. Over these resulting SISO channels, off-the-shelf scalar codes may be used.

In this paper, we propose a two-phase broadcasting scheme referred as Collaborative rateless Broadcast (CRBcast). We are particularly interested in reliability and energy efficiency of the broadcasting scheme for multi-hop wireless sensor networks. Our two-phase protocol is based on Probabilistic Broadcasting (PBcast) and an application layer rateless coding. At the first phase, the rateless-encoded packets are broadcasted based on PBcast, in which each node probabilistically relays every new received packet. The second recovery phase, which is based on simple collaborations of nodes, ensures that all nodes can recover original data. We first investigate PBcast analytically and with simulation, since the characteristics of PBcast influence CRBcast. Then, we investigate the effectiveness of CRBcast. We show that CRBcast can provide both reliability and energy efficiency. Simulation results indicate that CRBcast saves at least 72% and 60% energy in comparison with flooding and PBcast, respectively.

In cognitive relay systems, spectrum holes exist in 4 dimensions (4-D), namely, time, frequency, location, and direction. How to efficiently utilize these different kinds of spectrum holes to provide quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees for secondary users (SU) is a challenging task. In this paper, we first identify the benefits of separately applying cooperative beamforming and rateless coding aided relaying technologies. Specifically, cooperative beamforming has the particular advantage of exploiting spatial or directional spectrum holes without causing interference to PUs. On the other hand, rateless coding is capable of utilizing different kinds of spectrum opportunities in an aggregate way with low complexity. Both cooperative beamforming and rateless coding aided cognitive relaying schemes have been proposed to support either elastic or real-time traffics for SUs. Furthermore, we combine cooperative beamforming and rateless coding together in order to provide an efficient and robust way to utilize 4-D spectrum holes in cognitive relay systems, where spectrum sensing and channel estimation may be imperfect. A substantial performance gain can be obtained by the combination, compared to using these two techniques separately.

The explosively growing wireless video traffic demands high video quality and transmission efficiency. A new scheme for video transmission over channel with noise is proposed in this paper. Like standard video transmission, the scheme includes entropy coding followed by powerful channel coding. Unlike conventional schemes, we use a rateless coded modulation scheme instead of adaptive modulation coding (AMC) in traditional digital video transmitting to solve the dilemma of inaccurate channel estimation. The proposed rateless scheme does not need the explicit channel condition, it matches channel condition implicitly. We optimize the proposed system over GF(2). Performance comparisons are made with respect to the state-of-the-art video coding and channel coding scheme used in Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile network. Experiments show that the proposed system outperforms LTE by 2-3dB.

In edge computing the performance of distributed edge computation tasks are adversely impacted by stragglers (i.e., slowest devices). Previous research addresses this problem using coding techniques to bypass the dependence on stragglers. In stead of completely discarding partially unfinished coded computations on stragglers, recent research incorporates those computations contributed by stragglers before the deadline. A faster computation recovery is achieved. One problem with this approach, however, is the recovery accuracy because it is based on lossy quantization over coded data. In this paper, we treat the partially unfinished coded computation as erroneous computations and formulate the computation recovery problem as a compressed sensing (CS) problem. With this rateless approximate code approach, we can recover the erroneous computations with a high accuracy rate when the ratio of stragglers is relatively low. Experimental results show that we reduce the error rate by average of 32% under various straggler ratios compare with the state of the art.

In this paper, a parallel concatenated punctured polar (PCPP) codes is designed to realise the rateless property of polar codes. First, an improved random puncturing pattern of polar codes is proposed to archive better performance than random puncturing. Then, the optimal initial code rate is analyzed for multiple PCPP code blocks transmission in slow fading channels, which the optimal initial code rate of each new PCPP code block is determined by the overhead of the previous successful decoded code block and each packet can be transmitted with encoding construct of a 2-level PCPP codes.
