The widespread application of specialized embedded devices and their ever-growing sensing capabilities lead to an overload of raw data reaching the Cloud via the Internet of Things. Despite this massive amount of available data, data-driven applications still produce a limited impact on the real world. We argue that this limitation arises from the complexity the developers still face when engineering and deploying solutions on a plurality of embedded devices. Instead of focusing on constructing valuable information from raw data and designing algorithms to exploit it, the developers still have to figure out on their own: how to partition the computation between Edge, Fog, and Cloud;how to move partial results around in highly distributed solutions;how to create abstract interfaces to expose information-rich endpoints. This paper introduces the Virtual Sensor Domain-Specific Language (DSL), which builds the keystone for designing and developing powerful Computer-Aided Design tools and Integrated Development Environments to support the developers in focusing on information manipulation. The Virtual Sensor DSL is built on top of C++ to ease its adoption by the embedded development community. It introduces a reactive approach to data collection, technology mapping, and workload distribution. It allows the creation of adaptable Virtual Sensors, streaming processed information coming from the integration of multiple raw data streams, and it comes with integrated simulation capabilities, supporting prototyping. In this paper, we describe the entities the language offers, how the developers can exploit them, and analyze a real-world use case that benefitted from the Virtual Sensor DSL.

An incremental computation updates its result based on a change to its input, which is often an order of magnitude faster than a recomputation from scratch. In particular, incrementalization can make expensive computations feasible for settings that require short feedback cycles, such as interactive systems, IDEs, or (soft) real-time systems. This paper presents i3QL, a general-purpose programming language for specifying incremental computations. i3QL provides a declarative SQL-like syntax and is based on incremental versions of operators from relational algebra, enriched with support for general recursion. We integrated i3QL into Scala as a library, which enables programmers to use regular Scala code for non-incremental subcomputations of an i3QL query and to easily integrate incremental computations into larger software projects. To improve performance, i3QL optimizes user-defined queries by applying algebraic laws and partial evaluation. We describe the design and implementation of i3QL and its optimizations, demonstrate its applicability, and evaluate its performance.

Local-first software manages and processes private data locally while still enabling collaboration between multiple parties connected via partially unreliable networks. Such software typically involves interactions with users and the execution environment (the outside world). The decentralized nature of local-first software paired with the unpredictability of interactions driven from the outside world impede reasoning about their correctness. Yet, existing solutions to develop local-first software do not provide safety guarantees and instead expect developers to reason about concurrent interactions in an environment with unreliable network conditions. This is too much to ask of application developers, who are usually not experts in designing distributed systems. This work seeks to develop a programming model which facilitates the construction of local-first software and eradicates certain classes of safety and security problems by design. We do so by providing a dedicated local-first programming language and an accompanying automated verification procedure that can be integrated as part of the compilation process.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are comprised of a network of devices that vary widely in complexity, ranging from simple sensors to autonomous robots. Traditionally, controlling and sensing these devices happens through API communication, in either push or pull-based fashion. We argue that the computational power of these devices is converging to the point where they can do autonomous computations. This allows application programmers to run programs locally on the sensors, thereby reducing the communication and workload of more central command and control entities. This work introduces the Potato framework that aims to make programming CPS systems intuitively easy and fast. Potato is based on three essential mechanisms: failure handling by means of leasing, distribution by means of first-class reactive programs, and intentional retroactive designation of the network by means of capabilities and dynamic properties. In this paper we focus on the reactive capabilities of our framework. Potato enables programmers to create and deploy first-class reactive programs on CPS devices at run time, abstracting away from the API approach. Each node in the network is equipped with a minimal actor-based middleware that can execute first-class reactive programs. We have implemented Potato as a library in Elixir and have used it to implement several small examples.

Modern systems are exposing an ever increasing degree of complexity also due to the heterogeneity of the involved components. Distributed simulation is widely recognized as an effective tool to carry out verification and validation activities for heterogeneous and complex systems. Unfortunately, the use of distributed simulation frameworks and related implementation technologies require a proper modeling and simulation know-how, as well as a significant effort and software development skills. As a result, distributed simulation is not typically addressed by systems engineers who do not have the required expertise or background. The MONADS model-driven method has been introduced to overcome such limitations and provide systems engineers with the ability to properly carry out simulation-based verification and validation activities. The method specifically addresses the HLA (High Level Architecture) distributed simulation framework and introduces an automated approach to generate a significant portion of the HLA code from system models specified in SysML, the standard modeling language in the systems engineering field. The automatically obtained code is then to be finalized by a manual programming activity. This paper contributes to make easier and further reduce the effort of such a manual activity by integrating the reactive features of the RxHLA framework into the MONADS method. This integration enables the use of streams to effectively manage HLA-based asynchronous interactions. The paper describes the technical details of the various strategies that can be used to integrate RxHLA into the MONADS method, thus providing a significant degree of flexibility to MONADS users.

The increasing complexity of computer systems has led to the automation of administration functions, in the form of autonomic managers. One important aspect requiring such management is the issue of energy consumption of computing systems, in the perspective of green computing. As these managers address each a specific aspect, there is a need for using several managers to cover all the domains of administration. However, coordinating them is necessary for proper and effective global administration. Such coordination is a problem of synchronization and logical control of administration operations that can be applied by autonomous managers on the managed system at a given time in response to events observed on the state of this system. We therefore propose to investigate the use of reactive models with events and states, and discrete control techniques to solve this problem. In this paper, we illustrate this approach by integrating a controller obtained by synchronous programming, based on Discrete Controller Synthesis, in an autonomic system administration infrastructure. The role of this controller is to orchestrate the execution of reconfiguration operations of all administration policies to satisfy properties of logical consistency. We apply this approach to coordinate three managers : two energy-aware ones, which control server provisioning and processor frequency, and a repair manager.

The paper introduces anAgent-Oriented programming (AOP) framework based on the Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) model of agency. The novelty of this framework is in relying on the Actor model, instantiating each intentional agent as an autonomous micro-system run by actors. The working hypothesis behind this choice is that defining the agents via actors results in a more fine-grained modular architecture and that the execution of agent-oriented programs is enhanced (in scalability as well as in performance) by relying on robust implementations of Actor models such as Akka. The framework is benchmarked and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively against three other AOP frameworks: Jason, ASTRA and Sarl.

Context-oriented programming (coP) directly addresses context variability by providing dedicated language concepts: layers, units of modularity, store context-dependent behavior. During runtime, layers can be applied dynamically depending on the current context of the program. Various activation means for layers have been proposed. Most of them require developers to model context switches explicitly. In contrast, implicit layer activation (ILA) allows developers to bind the activation status of a layer to a boolean predicate. The associated layer stays automatically active as long as the given predicate evaluates to true. Despite its declarative semantics, ILA is usually implemented in an imperative fashion. In this paper, we present and compare two implementation variants for ILA in ContextJS: an imperative and a reactive implementation. Furthermore, we discuss their trade-offs regarding code complexity as well as runtime overhead.

Writing real-time applications that react to vast amounts of incoming data is a hard problem, as the volume of incoming data implies the need for distributed execution on a cluster architecture. We envision such an application can be created as a data processing pipeline which consists of a set of generic, reactive components, which may be reused in other applications. However, there is currently no programming model or framework that enables the reactive, scalable execution of such a pipeline on a cluster architecture. Our work introduces the notion of reactive workflows, a technique that combines concepts from scientific workflows and reactive programming. reactive workflows enable the integration of these generic components into a single workflow that can be executed on a cluster architecture in a reactive, scalable way. To deploy these reactive workflows, we introduce a domain specific language, called Skitter. Skitter enables developers to write reactive components and compose these into reactive workflows, which can be distributed over a cluster by Skitter's runtime system.

We introduce SECURESTREAMS, a middleware framework for secure stream processing. Its design builds on Intel's Secure Guard Extensions (SGX) to guarantee the privacy and the integrity of the data being processed. Our initial experimental results of SECURESTREAMS are promising: the framework is easy to use, and delivers high throughput, enabling developers to implement complex processing pipelines in a few lines of scripting code.
