Modern web applications are interactive. reactive programming languages and libraries are the state-of-the-art approach for declaratively specifying these interactive applications. However, programs written with these approaches contain error-prone boilerplate code for efficiency reasons. In this paper we present PixieDust, a declarative user-interface language for browser-based applications. PixieDust uses static dependency analysis to incrementally update a browser-DOM at run-time, without boilerplate code. We demonstrate that applications in PixieDust contain less boilerplate code than state-of-the-art approaches, while achieving on-par performance.

Developing new ways to improve game engines and enabling the creation of more accurate experiences is an important issue, especially for real-time applications such as Virtual Reality. As this technology has evolved, the gap between rendered frames has become smaller and environments have become more complex. As a result, mistakes can arise with regard to order-dependent events. Often these mistakes result in a temporarily unstable state in the environment, and may not be visible because of the time lapse between rendered frames. These errors are compounded by events which are not directly driven by the game engine, such as user movement and input. There is a continuous interaction between the user and the environment and the precise actions that user may take often cannot be predicted a priori. reactive programming is a still evolving paradigm that has been employed in many different applications such as robotics and user interfaces. Our research presents a reactive, dependency-based framework for game engines using associations between components to establish the order in which they update. Automated tests were developed to evaluate the framework and compare its performance to Unity3D's default update structure as well as an existing reactive programming framework.

In user interfaces on Web and desktop applications, the system must quickly respond to user inputs and accurately display the result. Current solutions for user interfaces often respond too slowly and display temporarily inaccurate or misleading states, resulting in low user satisfaction. To alleviate this problem, we develop a reactive programming approach that encodes the complex relationships among the user interface components in a dependency graph and then uses the graph to order the updates of the components without violating the dependency constraints. This enables more timely updates and more accurate visualizations, potentially providing users with a more satisfying experience. We evaluate our approach by comparing its performance with important alternative reactive libraries for user interfaces.

The reactiveX API, also known as the reactive Extensions in the. NET world, is a recently popularized reactive programming framework for asynchronous, event-based, multi-threaded programming. Presented by its proponents as a solid tool for applications requiring a simple yet powerful approach to event-driven systems, it has seen favorable adoption in many popular languages. Although Ada has been long-favored by powerful tasking capabilities that reduce the need for additional multithreading support, the reactive approach has properties that are well-suited to the safety and maintainability culture predominant in the Ada world, such as complexity reduction, race-condition and deadlock avoidance, and enhanced maintainability by means of concise and well-defined information flows. This work presents the design for a reactiveX Ada implementation that aims to balance desirable library properties such as compile-time checks, reasonable user-required generic instantiations, and a shallow learning curve for both library clients and maintainers. The Ada programmer can henceforth benefit from the abundant documentation existing for the language-agnostic reactiveX approach without stepping out of the Ada tool chain.

Distributed applications are traditionally developed using separate modules for each component in the distributed system, which can even be written in different programming languages. Those modules react on events such as user input, which are produced by other modules, and may in turn produce new events to be handled by different modules. Thus, most distributed applications are reactive in nature. Distributed event-based data flow makes it is hard to reason about the system and therefore makes the development of distributed systems challenging. In this paper, we present language abstractions for distributed reactive programming easing the development of such applications and supporting various distributed architectures.

Processing data at different rates is generally a hard problem in reactive programming. Buffering problems, lags, and concurrency issues often occur. Many of these problems are clock errors, where data at different rates is combined incorrectly. Techniques to avoid clock errors, such as type-level clocks and deterministic scheduling, exist in the field of synchronous programming, but are not implemented in general-purpose languages like Haskell. Rhine is a clock-safe library for synchronous and asynchronous Functional reactive programming (FRP). It separates the aspects of clocking, scheduling and resampling from each other, and ensures clock-safety at the type level. Concurrent communication is encapsulated safely. Diverse reactive subsystems can be combined in a coherent, declarative data-flow framework, while correct interoperability of data at different rates is guaranteed by type-level clocks. This provides a general-purpose framework that simplifies multi-rate FRP systems and can be used for game development, media applications, GUIs and embedded systems, through a flexible API with many reusable components.

Distributed and Real-Time Simulation represents a solid and effective approach to manage the ever-increasing complexity of modern systems. The IEEE 1516-2010 for Modeling and Simulation (M&S) High Level Architecture (HLA) is an interoperability standard for Distributed Simulation (DS) used to support analysis, engineering and training in different research and industrial domains. Using HLA, simulation entities (called Federates) can interact (that is, to publish and/or subscribe ObjectClasses and InteractionClasses, to communicate data, and to synchronize actions) with other Federates in a common simulation environment (called Federation) through the services provided by the Run-Time Infrastructure (RTI) that abstract and hide the details of the computing infrastructures making them communicable. In today's HLA-DS systems, in which simulation entities are highly concurrent, distributed, and the interactions among them are asynchronous, great benefits can derive from the exploitation of reactive approaches, tools and techniques so as to reactively manage the Federates' communication flow instead of handling it through HLA Callbacks. In this context, the paper presents a solution for defining reactive HLA Federates along with the RxHLA software framework that aims at defining and building reactive, concurrent, and distributed time/event-driven simulation components (Federates) in a reactive fashion.

Maintaining consistency between data throughout a system using scattered, imperative code fragments is challenging. Some mechanisms address this challenge by making data dependencies explicit. Among these mechanisms are reactive collections, which define data dependencies for collections of objects, and object queries, which allow developers to query their program for a subset of objects. However, on their own, both of these mechanisms are limited. reactive collections require an initial collection to apply reactive operations to and object queries do not update its result as the system changes. Using these two mechanisms in conjunction allows each to mitigate the disadvantage of the other. To do so, object queries need to respond to state changes of the system. In this paper, we propose a combination of both mechanisms, called reactive object queries. reactive object queries allow the developer to declaratively select all objects in a program that match a particular predicate, creating a view. Additionally, views can be composed of other views using reactive operations. All views are automatically updated when the program state changes. To better integrate with existing imperative systems, we provide fine-grained events signaling view updates. We implemented the proposed concepts in JavaScript. Our initial experience with example applications shows that the combined concept eases the integration of reactive mechanisms with object-oriented environments by avoiding scattered update code.

We describe a denotational model of higher-order functional reactive programming using ultrametric spaces and nonexpansive maps, which provide a natural Cartesian closed generalization of causal stream functions and guarded recursive definitions. We define a type theory corresponding to this semantics and show that it satisfies normalization. Finally, we show how to efficiently implement reactive programs written in this language using an imperatively updated dataflow graph, and give a separation logic proof that this low-level implementation is correct with respect to the high-level semantics.
