The reactive paradigm for developing user interfaces promises both simplicity and scalability, but existing frameworks usually compromise one for the other. We present Rife, a reactive state management system that achieves both simplicity and scalability by managing the entire state of a web application in a client-side persistent relational database. Data transformations over the application state are defined in a graph of reactive relational queries, providing developers with a simple spreadsheet-like reactivity model. Domain state and UI state are unified within the same system, and efficient incremental query maintenance ensures the UI remains responsive. We present a formative case study of using Rife to build a music management application with complex data and stringent performance requirements.

Model-driven tools frequently rely on advanced technologies to support model queries, view maintenance, design rule validation, model transformations or design space exploration. Some of these features are initiated explicitly by domain engineers (batch execution) while others are executed automatically when certain trigger events are detected (live execution). Unfortunately, their integration into a complex industrial modeling environment is difficult due to hidden interference and unspecified interaction between different features. In this paper, we present a reactive, event-driven model transformation platform over EMF models, which captures tool features as model queries and transformations, and provides a systematic, well-founded integration between a variety of such tool features. VIATRA 3 offers a family of internal DSLs (i.e. dedicated libraries) to specify advanced tool features built on top of existing languages like EMF-INCQUERY and Xtend. Its main innovation is a source incremental execution scheme built on the reactive programming paradigm ssupported by an event-driven virtual machine.

This paper introduces SignalJ, a lightweight extension of Java with reactive values. A reactive value is a value that can depend on other reactive values, and it is implicitly updated when the depended reactive values are updated. Each reactive value is typed with a signal type, which ensures that the dependent reactive values are functional. SignalJ also provides handlers of reactive values that are called whenever the monitored reactive value is updated. With these features, SignalJ declaratively specifies dataflows within an application in a functional manner, which enables effective implementation of reactive software. The syntax of SignalJ is almost identical to that of Java 8 except that it introduces a new modifier, signal, to represent signal types.

The reactive programming paradigm has become ubiquitous for modern web and mobile app development. But despite its many benefits, today reactive programming is limited to data updates within the client, leaving to the programmer the tedious and error-prone tasks of managing updates to code and synchronizing data updates between reactive clients and a server database. In this paper, we lay out the vision for Meerkat, a tierless, reactive, and live programming language designed to scale to the needs of modern applications. We introduce the language through a chat application which runs on our prototype implementation. We then describe approaches for modularizing and scaling Meerkat programs, customizing tradeoffs between properties such as consistency and availability, supporting local-first software and rich data models, and scaling live updates to full DevOps in software organizations. The Meerkat research program will enable a newera of developing apps that aremore responsive, reliable, and evolvable than ever before.

The integration of multimedia frameworks and APIs for accessing cognitive computing systems into a unified programming model may not be straightforward. Current solutions use programming models that lead to problems like callback hell or synchronization of threads. In this paper, we explore the use of the reactive programming paradigm to create multimedia applications that explore cognitive computing systems features. By using CEU as instance of reactive language, we discuss how this approach promotes a straightforward integration between these domains, while avoiding the aforementioned issues. We discuss the implementation of two case studies to illustrate the advantages of this approach.

This dissertation proposes a programming model for Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) that relieves the programmer of a difficult and error-prone task: orchestrating concurrent responses to events to ensure data dependencies are always enforced correctly. In this programming model, rather than defining program responses to events, the programmer defines the data dependencies that exist in the GUI and the methods by which those dependencies may be enforced—a run-time system uses this specification to generate responses to events. The approach gives the following guarantee: the same sequence of events produces the same results, regardless of the timing of those events. The dissertation demonstrates the benefits of the proposed programming model with implementations of several example user interfaces. At the core of this programming model is a data structure known as a property model. A property model composes responses to individual events into a single reactive program that runs asynchronously. The program's results are used to update the GUI. The program is constructed in a manner that respects all data dependencies, thereby guaranteeing that results are consistent regardless of the length of time taken by individual responses. The core reactive program may be extended with features that support additional functionality, such as access to prior variable values, optional data dependencies, and identifying unused variables. The dissertation defines the semantics of the construction and execution of this reactive program formally. The dissertation shows how property models may be defined as a composition of reusable components. This is essential for modeling GUIs whose structures change in response to user events by the addition or removal of components. Components can contain data and dependencies as well as templates that describe how dependencies arise from composition with other components. Interactive programming is a method for implementing programming languages that supports an interactive, exploratory style of program development and debugging. The basic idea is to reify the steps of a computation into a persistent data structure which can be explored interactively, and which reacts to changes to inputs like a spreadsheet. Reifying the computation associates the computed value with provenance information, which is essential to effective program comprehension and debugging. Making the data structure persistent means that it can evolve incrementally, preserving existing structure where possible, allowing the programmer to apply fixes to a program in the middle of a complex debugging activity without having to restart the program and lose browsing context. Interactive programming lies at the intersection of incremental computation, software visualisation and reactive programming.
