ProbZelus is a synchronous probabilistic language for the design of reactive probabilistic models in interaction with an environment. reactive inference methods continuously learn distributions over the unobserved parameters of the model from statistical observations. Unfortunately, this inference problem is in general intractable. Monte Carlo inference techniques thus rely on many independent executions to compute accurate approximations. These methods are expensive but can be parallelized. We propose to use JAX to parallelize ProbZelus reactive inference engine. JAX is a recent library to compile Python code which can then be executed on massively parallel architectures such as GPUs or TPUs. In this paper, we describe a new reactive inference engine implemented in JAX and the new associated JAX backend for ProbZelus. We show on existing benchmarks that our new parallel implementation outperforms the original sequential implementation for a high number of particles.

The paradigm of reactive programming has attained more and more interest in recent time. In this paper, we show why reactive programming is a well-suited paradigm for sensor fusion algorithms. As a new contribution, we show how the efficiency of stream-oriented reactive programs can be enhanced by applying the magic update method that originally stems from the field of update propagation in deductive databases.

Dataflow languages provide natural support for specifying constraints between objects in dynamic applications, where programs need to react efficiently to changes in their environment. In this article, we show that one-way dataflow constraints, largely explored in the context of interactive applications, can be seamlessly integrated in any imperative language and can be used as a general paradigm for writing performance-critical reactive applications that require efficient incremental computations. In our framework, programmers can define ordinary statements of the imperative host language that enforce constraints between objects stored in special memory locations designated as "reactive." reactive objects can be of any legal type in the host language, including primitive data types, pointers, arrays, and structures. Statements defining constraints are automatically re-executed every time their input memory locations change, letting a program behave like a spreadsheet where the values of some variables depend on the values of other variables. The constraintsolving mechanism is handled transparently by altering the semantics of elementary operations of the host language for reading and modifying objects. We provide a formal semantics and describe a concrete embodiment of our technique into C/C++, showing how to implement it efficiently in conventional platforms using off-the-shelf compilers. We discuss common coding idioms and relevant applications to reactive scenarios, including incremental computation, observer design pattern, data structure repair, and software visualization. The performance of our implementation is compared to problem-specific change propagation algorithms, as well as to language-centric approaches such as self-adjusting computation and subject/observer communication mechanisms, showing that the proposed approach is efficient in practice.

MONACO-A domain-specific language solution for reactive process control programming with hierarchical components

In this paper, we present MONACO - a domain-specific language for developing event-based, reactive process control programs - and its visual interactive programming environment The main purpose of the language is to bring process control programming closer to domain experts. Important design goals have therefore been to keep the language concise and to allow programs to be written that reflect the perceptions of domain experts. MONACO is similar to Statecharts in its expressive power, but adopts an imperative notation. Moreover, MONACO uses a state-of-the-art component approach with interfaces and polymorphic implementations, and enforces strict hierarchical component architectures that support hierarchical abstraction of control functionality. We present the main design goals, the essential programming elements, the visual interactive programming environment, results from industrial case studies, and a formal definition of the semantics of the reactive behavior of MONACO programs in the form of labeled transition systems. reactiveML is a synchronous reactive extension of the general purpose programming language OCaml. It allows to program reactive systems such as video games or simulators. This paper presents rmltop, the reactiveML counterpart of the OCaml toplevel. This toplevel allows a programmer to interactively write reactiveML programs which are type-checked, compiled and loaded on the fly. The user can then progressively run concurrent processes and observe the interactions between them. The main strength of rmltop is that all valid reactiveML expressions are accepted in the toplevel with the same semantics as in the compiler. This allows to use the reactiveML toplevel as a debugger. Furthermore, the interpreted code is as efficient as if it was compiled. Moreover, a toplevel interpreter being itself a reactive system, another originality of rmltop is its own implementation in reactiveML which makes it relatively light.

This letter introduces software-defined watchdogs, a programming model for handling faults that manifest as delayed or missing signals. The programming model is implemented as an extension to the polyglot coordination language Lingua Franca, where it acts as an eager deadline for delayed inputs. The technique is compared against hardware-defined watchdogs and software watchdogs in other reactive languages.

Active Inference is a framework that emphasizes the interaction between agents and their environment. While the framework has seen significant advancements in the development of agents, the environmental models are often borrowed from reinforcement learning problems, which may not fully capture the complexity of multi-agent interactions or allow complex, conditional communication. This paper introduces reactive Environments, a comprehensive paradigm that facilitates complex multi-agent communication. In this paradigm, both agents and environments are defined as entities encapsulated by boundaries with interfaces. This setup facilitates a robust framework for communication in nonequilibrium-Steady-State systems, allowing for complex interactions and information exchange. We present a Julia package ***, which is a specific implementation of reactive Environments, where we utilize a reactive programming style for efficient implementation. The flexibility of this paradigm is demonstrated through its application to several complex, multi-agent environments. These case studies highlight the potential of reactive Environments in modeling sophisticated systems of interacting agents.

A Semantic Framework for the Design of Distributed reactive Real-Time Languages and Applications

The proliferation of on-demand internet services delivered over a network of a heterogeneous set of computing devices has created the need for high-performing dynamic systems in real-time. Services such as audio and video streaming, self-driving cars, the Internet of things (IoT), or instant communication on social networks have forced system designers to rethink the architectures and tools for implementing computer systems. reactive programming has been advocated as a programming paradigm suitable for implementing dynamic applications with complex and heterogeneous architectural needs. However, there is no consensus on the core set of features that a reactive framework must-have. Furthermore, the current set of features proposed in reactive tools seems very restricted to cope with the actual needs for concurrency and distribution in modern systems. In this paper, several alternative semantics for distributed reactive languages are investigated, addressing complex open issues such as glitch avoidance, explicit distribution support, and constructs for explicit time management. First, we propose a reactive event-based programming language with explicit support for distribution, concurrency, and explicit time manipulation (reactiveXD). Second, we present a reactive event-based semantic framework called Distributed reactive Rewriting Framework (DRRF). The framework uses rewriting logic to model the components of a distributed base application, observables, and observers, and predicates supporting explicit time manipulation. Finally, to validate the proposal, the paper discusses the specification of the semantics of reactiveXD and a scenario describing a case of intrusion detection on IoT networks.
