Statically Bounded-Memory Delayed Sampling for Probabilistic Streams

Probabilistic programming languages aid developers performing Bayesian inference. These languages provide programming constructs and tools for probabilistic modeling and automated inference. Prior work introduced a probabilistic programming language, ProbZelus, to extend probabilistic programming functionality to unbounded streams of data. This work demonstrated that the delayed sampling inference algorithm could be extended to work in a streaming context. ProbZelus showed that while delayed sampling could be effectively deployed on some programs, depending on the probabilistic model under consideration, delayed sampling is not guaranteed to use a bounded amount of memory over the course of the execution of the program. In this paper, we the present conditions on a probabilistic program's execution under which delayed sampling will execute in bounded memory. The two conditions are dataflow properties of the core operations of delayed sampling: the m-consumed property and the unseparated paths property. A program executes in bounded memory under delayed sampling if, and only if, it satisfies the m-consumed and unseparated paths properties. We propose a static analysis that abstracts over these properties to soundly ensure that any program that passes the analysis satisfies these properties, and thus executes in bounded memory under delayed sampling.

Scalable and reactive Multi Micro-Agents System Middleware for Massively Distributed Systems

IT transformation has revolutionized the business landscape and changed most of organizations business model into digital and innovation driven firms. To fully take advantage of this digitalization and the exponential growth of data, organizations need to rely on resilient, scalable, extremely connected, highly available & very performant systems. To meet this need, this paper presents a model of middleware for multi micro-agents system based on reactive programming and designed for massively distributed systems and High-Performance Computing, especially to face big data challenges. This middleware is based on multi-agents systems (MAS) which are known as a reliable solution for High Performance Computing. This proposal framework is built on abstraction and modularity principles through a multi-layered architecture. The design choices aim to ensure cooperation between heterogeneous distributed systems by decoupling the communication model and the cognitive pattern of micro agents. To ensure high scalability and to overcome networks latency, the proposal architecture uses distribution model of data & computing, that allows an adaptation of the grid size as needed. The resilience problem is addressed by adopting the same mechanism as Hazelcast middleware, thanks to his peer-to-peer architecture with no single point of failure.

Simplifying CPS Application Development through Fine-grained, Automatic Timeout Predictions

Application development for Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) is challenging, because the wireless network and the devices introduce latencies that vary continuously along with the load, status, or environmental conditions of the infrastructure. reactive programming is well suited for the development of event-driven applications, yet current reactive programming frameworks require developers to predict event arrival timeboundaries at compile time, which is impractical, if not impossible, for CPS. Thus, there is a tradeoff between timeliness and completeness of complex event computations, e.g., operational efficiency in a manufacturing plant: Waiting too long until all individual events arrive can fail to produce a useful result, while not waiting long enough may lead to faults due to incomplete status information. In this article, we propose (a) a set of extensions to state-of-the-art reactive programming frameworks, which remove the burden of specifying timeouts at compile time by utilizing (b) Khronos, a middleware that automatically determines timeouts by taking into account variations in event arrival times due to the underlying infrastructure. Evaluation on a physical testbed shows that the extensions significantly decrease developer effort and that Khronos considerably improves timeliness under varying network configurations and conditions, while still satisfying the application's tolerance to missed events.

Distributed System Development with SCALALOCI

Distributed applications are traditionally developed as separate modules, often in different languages, which react to events, like user input, and in turn produce new events for the other modules. Separation into components requires time-consuming integration. Manual implementation of communication forces programmers to deal with low-level details. The combination of the two results in obscure distributed data flows scattered among multiple modules, hindering reasoning about the system as a whole. The SCALALOCI distributed programming language addresses these issues with a coherent model based on placement types that enables reasoning about distributed data flows, supporting multiple software architectures via dedicated language features and abstracting over low-level communication details and data conversions. As we show, SCALALOCI simplifies developing distributed systems, reduces error-prone communication code and favors early detection of bugs.

AN ANALYSIS OF RECONSTITUTED FLUID MILK PRICING POLICY

This analysis suggests that alteration of the reconstituted fluid milk pricing provisions of federal and state milk market orders would have a substantial impact on market equilibrium. A reactive programming model of the U.S. milk market was used to simulate the effects of altered reconstituted fluid milk pricing policy. The solutions indicate that reconstituted fluid milk, as a lower cost alternative to fresh fluid milk, would make up a substantial portion of the fluid milk consumption in some markets.

Designing Modular Software: A Case Study in Introductory Statistics

Modular programming is a development paradigm that emphasizes self-contained, flexible, and independent pieces of functionality. This practice allows new features to be seamlessly added when desired, and unwanted features to be removed, thus simplifying the software's user interface. The recent rise of web-based software applications has presented new challenges for designing an extensible, modular software system. In this article, we outline a framework for designing such a system, with a focus on reproducibility of the results. We present as a case study a Shiny-based web application called intRo, that allows the user to perform basic data analyses and statistical routines. Finally, we highlight some challenges we encountered, and how to address them, when combining modular programming concepts with reactive programming as used by Shiny. This paper describes the ESPranto Software Development Kit, which supports the development of sensor/actuator based applications, most notably educational toys and games. It enables non-technical users, such as parents, teachers, game developers and psychologists, to specify applications by themselves. The SDK allows them to start off quickly with developing simple applications. Then, as their programming skills increase with experience, the SDK supports them to create more complex applications. This is achieved by offering a. complete tool chain with one, consistent programming paradigm. Each link is a separate tool offering a tailored amount of flexibility and complexity. To ensure that users can understand the feedback the SDK provides them, it is given in terms of the tool currently used. Furthermore, by preventing runtime errors, a user can be sure a program will work correctly if it compiles. We validated the ESPranto SDK partially by tests, but mainly by monitoring users applying the SDK. In practice the ESPranto SDK indeed proved to meet its design goals for all of its intended users.

Mavo is a small extension to the HTML language that empowers non-programmers to create simple web applications. Authors can mark up any normal HTML document with attributes that specify data elements that Mavo makes editable and persists. But while applications authored with Mavo allow users to edit individual data items, they do not offer any programmatic data actions that can act in customizable ways on large collections of data simultaneously or that modify data according to a computation. We explore an extension to the Mavo language that enables non-programmers to author these richer data update actions. We show that it lets authors create a more powerful set of applications than they could previously, while adding little additional complexity to the authoring process. Through user evaluations, we assess how closely our data update syntax matches how novice authors would instinctively express such actions, and how well they are able to use the syntax we provided.

We present a technique for designing reconfiguration controllers in the Fractal component-based framework. We obtain discrete control loops that automatically enforce safety properties on the interactions between components, concerning, e.g., mutual exclusions, forbidden or imposed sequences. We use a reactive programming language, with a new mechanism of behavioural contracts. Its compilation involves discrete controller synthesis, which automatically generates the correct adaptation controllers. We apply our approach to the problem of adaptive ressource management, illustrated by the example of a HTTP server.

Functional languages have been used with great success in the domain of web programming. The use of reactive programming approaches to deal with time-varying data reduces the need for callbacks, and allows web applications to be written in a more declarative style. In spite of advances in functional reactive web programming, various issues remain with integrating reactive data into web pages. Portions of presentation-layer code are typically written in the functional language and imperatively added to a container section on a page, fragmenting design and requiring developers to work around the lack of proper and safe integration between the data, client and server tiers of their applications. In this paper, we investigate the use of F# compile-time metaprogramming techniques to enable developing type-safe, reactive client-server applications with seamless server-side persistence using WebSharper, a mature F# web framework. Next to the two-way binding between client-side data models and their corresponding presentation, the reactive data models in our work can also express the details of server-side persistence and synchronization, using a modular approach and a strongly-typed communication channel over web sockets with communicating agents between the two tiers. The work presented also enables using annotated HTML markup templates, translated by an F# type provider to our statically-typed reactive data models. This way, the design artifacts can be externalized into native HTML that designers can easily work with, and markup changes are checked against the F# code base at compile time. We demonstrate the combination of these techniques with a data-aware single-page client-server chat application, expressed entirely in F#. We find that type safety, the uniform F# programming model, and the reactive design around data binding, synchronization, and persistence greatly enhances developer productivity.
