In this paper, we present a solution to the DEBS 2016 Grand Challenge that leverages Apache Flink, an open source platform for distributed stream and batch processing. We design the system architecture focusing on the exploitation of parallelism and memory efficiency so to enable an effective processing of high volume data streams on a distributed infrastructure. Our solution to the first query relies on a distributed and fine-grain approach for updating the post scores and determining partial ranks, which are then merged into a single final rank. Furthermore, changes in the final rank are identified so to update the output only if needed. The second query efficiently represents in-memory the evolving social graph and uses a customized Bron-Kerbosch algorithm to identify the largest communities active on a topic. We leverage on an in-memory caching system to keep the largest connected components which have been previously identified by the algorithm, thus saving computational *** experimental results show that, on a portion of the dataset large half that provided for the Grand Challenge, our system can process up to 400 tuples/s with an average latency of 2.5 ms for the first query, and up to 370 tuples/s with an average latency of 2.7 ms for the second query.

3-D imaging of blood flow based on 2-D ultrasound scanning and position sensor information can be used to portray clinical information not currently available in vascular and peripheral imaging. During surgery, information of blood flow is important to identify and avoid damage to important vessels. 3-D intraoperative ultrasound flow imaging has proven useful in this respect. However, due to Doppler angle-dependencies and the complexity of the vascular architecture, the generated 3-D image of blood vessels often have drop-outs in the vessel structure. In this work we aim to reduce the number of dropouts in the 3-D blood flow images by combining 2-D flow images with different transmit angles. The compounded 2-D images are further reconstructed to a 3-D flow image based on information from an accurate position sensor system. The method was implemented on a research ultrasound scanner for real-time processing of the data, and in vitro trials showed promising results. The method also showed promising results in vivo using a clinical approved high-end scanner, improving the 3-D image quality of the feeding arteries of an arteriovenous malformation.

The NATO-STO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) has proposed to approach the problem of monitoring marine traffic in defined sea areas by using passive acoustics on a mobile underwater platform, in particular by hosting a small volumetric acoustic array on an underwater glider. Passive underwater acoustic technologies applied to mobile autonomous underwater platforms such as gliders may allow: minimum environmental impact, covertness, long endurance, wide area coverage, near real-time, continuous ('24/7') monitoring and availability of several functionalities, ranging from detection to classification of acoustic noise sources. Gliders are particularly appropriate for this kind of application, as their utmost features are: (a) persistence;(b) discreteness;(c) portability;(d) scalability;(d) remote control. In the context of the EU FP7 PERSEUS project, CMRE's objectives were to detect and estimate the direction of arrival of boats through passive acoustics, by processing acoustic data in real time, directly on board the glider, through the application of appropriate algorithms, and then sending results to the PERSEUS Command&Control station for data fusion and visualization.

A steel C908 galvanizing line voice alarm system is established under the OPC standard, and OPC data acquisition server collected field production data, then the data is sent to voice alarm client by UDP protocol. According to the requests of field production client the judgement is made whether production is affected by fault or not, when major failure occurs, the system voice provides alarm information and other related contents. This paper, combining object-oriented thinking with traditional software design methods, realized the OPC data acquisition, UDP data transmission, real-time data processing, monitoring and information management to galvanizing process. This system reduced the frequency of major accidents, improved production efficiency and good results were got in online operation.

Microwave O-mode reflectometry is a diagnostic technique that will play an important supplementary role for plasma position control for ITER and forseeably for DEMO. Density profiles from reflectometry will provide, at high temporal resolutions, estimates of the gap between the plasma magnetic separatrix and the tokamak vessel walls. These estimates will be used to detect and correct drifts in the magnetic gap measurements, the primary measurements used for plasma position and shape control. The feasibility of this alternative feedback control approach was demonstrated in 2011 on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) [1], where the reflectometry gap estimate actually replaced the corresponding magnetic measurement in the position control loop. Presently, the AUG's real-time (RT) reflectometry diagnostic is being upgraded to improve not only its density range coverage but also its acquisition and RT data processing performance. The diagnostic is now capable of acquiring a total of 16 channels (previously 8) from which 8, corresponding to microwave bands K, Ka, Q and V from both the high (HFS) and low field side (LFS) reflectometers, are used in the RT density profile and separatrix gap calculations. The modern NUMA hardware architecture of the updated data processing server allows for an efficient and separate handling of the data-flows produced by the hosted acquisition systems. The higher RAM and CPU interconnection bandwidths allow the implementation of new operation modes that exploit the very high data throughput (> 1.2 GB/s) of each of the two used acquisition boards. RT reconstruction of the density profiles is a complex algorithm, whose performance will also be improved by the additional processing power (16 cores instead of 8). The system was specified to acquire and store HFS and LFS density profile data every < 250 mu s whilst simultaneously producing profile measurements for RT control every 1 ms. Storm has long served as the main platform for real-time analytics at Twitter. However, as the scale of data being processed in real-time at Twitter has increased, along with an increase in the diversity and the number of use cases, many limitations of Storm have become apparent. We need a system that scales better, has better debug-ability, has better performance, and is easier to manage - all while working in a shared cluster infrastructure. We considered various alternatives to meet these needs, and in the end concluded that we needed to build a new real-time stream data processing system. This paper presents the design and implementation of this new system, called Heron. Heron is now the de facto stream data processing engine inside Twitter, and in this paper we also share our experiences from miming Heron in production. In this paper, we also provide empirical evidence demonstrating the efficiency and scalability of Heron.

A real-time data processing algorithm based on Run-Length Encoding (RLE) for an intelligent racing vehicle is introduced in this paper. In order to improve the achievement of the intelligent racing vehicle's running in the second loop by recoding route information, a new method based on RLE is provided by setting an optimal calculus threshold. Simulated by Matlab/Simulink, the route memorization algorithm shows the obvious advantage in the data compression, which makes the compression ratio up to 22.3. In the meantime, the calculus threshold can be constructed in a certain range, which qualifies the algorithm with a good robustness. Compared with the optimal results achieved by Matlab's genetic algorithm and direct search toolbox, the RLE algorithm can satisfy the requirements very well. When the embedded system has to face the flood for the data increasing geometrically, this high-quality real-time algorithm has been demonstrated with great practical potential.
