A real-time data processing algorithm based on Run-Length Encoding (RLE) for an intelligent racing vehicle is introduced in this paper. In order to improve the achievement of the intelligent racing vehicle's running in the second loop by recoding route information, a new method based on RLE is provided by setting an optimal calculus threshold. Simulated by Matlab/Simulink, the route memorization algorithm shows the obvious advantage in the data compression, which makes the compression ratio up to 22.3. In the meantime, the calculus threshold can be constructed in a certain range, which qualifies the algorithm with a good robustness. Compared with the optimal results achieved by Matlab's genetic algorithm and direct search toolbox, the RLE algorithm can satisfy the requirements very well. When the embedded system has to face the flood for the data increasing geometrically, this high-quality real-time algorithm has been demonstrated with great practical potential.

A proposed design for a reconfigurable x-ray Pixel Array Detector (PAD) is described. It operates by integrating a high-end commercial field programmable gate array (FPGA) into a 3-layer device along with a high-resistivity diode detection layer and a custom, application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) layer. The ASIC layer contains an energy-discriminating photon-counting front end with photon hits streamed directly to the FPGA via a massively parallel, high-speed data connection. FPGA resources can be allocated to perform user defined tasks on the pixel data streams, including the implementation of a direct time autocorrelation function (ACF) with time resolution down to 100 ns. Using the FPGA at the front end to calculate the ACF reduces the required data transfer rate by several orders of magnitude when compared to a fast framing detector. The FPGA-ASIC high-speed interface, as well as the in-FPGA implementation of a real-time ACF for x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy experiments has been designed and simulated. The proposed algorithm enables real-time noise estimation directly on the raw data stream of an X-ray detection system. This allows for better detector monitoring and increases the measurement accuracy, especially in long term measurements and under changing environment conditions. The noise value is used as an event extraction threshold and is therefore the most critical parameter for the performance in X-ray data processing. Inaccurately estimated noise values can result into significantly poorer energy resolutions. The new algorithm is designed for low memory bandwidth, precise estimation results and a low processing complexity. This allows real-time data processing even for large and fast detector systems with an output rate of hundreds of MPixels/s. Compared to the calculation method used up to now the memory bandwidth can be reduced down to a factor of a hundred with the new algorithm. The new developed real-time Dynamic Noise Estimation (DNE) algorithm uses an iterative approach for the estimation. For the calculation is only an increment/decrement operation and an integer comparison required. This simple approach allows a resource efficient hardware implementation on FPGAs. Simulation results confirm the excellent estimation accuracy and stability with real-time performance. Measurements with Fano-limited energy resolution, the theoretically best achievable energy resolution with semiconductor detectors, confirm this outstanding performance on real detector systems. The reliability and stability of the system was demonstrated during a long term irradiation campaign for Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer (MIXS) [5], [3]. MIXS is an instrument onboard ESA's corner stone mission BepiColombo [1] and will be launched 2015 into an orbit around Mercury.

The Wind Float is a semi-submersible floating foundation supporting multi-megawatt wind turbines. A full-scale 2MW Wind Float demonstration unit was installed off the coast of Portugal in October 2011. Many instruments are installed on this prototype to measure the environmental conditions and the response of the platform at the site. The first section of the paper focuses on the validation of the wave measurements obtained from two radar-based wave probes onboard the platform. The wave elevation at the site is reconstructed and typical wave statistics are computed. The results are compared and validated with independent buoy measurements close to site. The second section of the paper presents estimates of prevailing wave direction and directional wave spectra based on platform motions. These results are also benchmarked with onsite buoy measurements.

Computing in the last decade has been characterized by the rise of data- intensive scalable computing (DISC) systems. In particular, recent years have wit- nessed a rapid growth in the popularity of fast analytics systems. These systems exemplify a trend where queries that previously involved batch-processing (e. g., run- ning a MapReduce job) on a massive amount of data, are increasingly expected to be answered in near real-time with low latency. This dissertation addresses the problem that existing designs for various components used in the software stack for DISC sys- tems do not meet the requirements demanded by fast analytics applications. In this work, we focus specifically on two components: 1. Key-value storage: Recent work has focused primarily on supporting reads with high throughput and low latency. However, fast analytics applications require that new data entering the system (e. g., new web-pages crawled, currently trend- ing topics) be quickly made available to queries and analysis codes. This means that along with supporting reads efficiently, these systems must also support writes with high throughput, which current systems fail to do. In the first part of this work, we solve this problem by proposing a new key-value storage system – called the WriteBuffer (WB) Tree – that provides up to 30× higher write per- formance and similar read performance compared to current high-performance systems. 2. GroupBy-Aggregate: Fast analytics systems require support for fast, incre- mental aggregation of data for with low-latency access to results. Existing techniques are memory-inefficient and do not support incremental aggregation efficiently when aggregate data overflows to disk. In the second part of this dis- sertation, we propose a new data structure called the Compressed Buffer Tree (CBT) to implement memory-efficient in-memory aggregation. We also show how the WB Tree can be modified to support efficient disk-based aggregation.

The digital revolution is transforming astronomy from a data-starved to a data-submerged science. Instruments such as the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will measure their accumulated data in petabytes. The capacity to produce enormous volumes of data must be matched with the computing power to process that data and produce meaningful results. In addition to handling huge data rates, we need adaptive calibration and beamforming to handle atmospheric fluctuations and radio frequency interference, and to provide a user environment which makes the full power of large telescope arrays accessible to both expert and non-expert users. Delayed calibration and analysis limit the science which can be done. To make the best use of both telescope and human resources we must reduce the burden of data reduction. We propose to build a heterogeneous computing platform for real-time processing of radio telescope array data. Our instrumentation comprises a flexible correlator, beam former, and imager that is based on state-of-the-art digital signal processing closely coupled with a computing cluster. This instrumentation will be highly accessible to scientists, engineers, and students for research and development of real-time processing algorithms, and will tap into the pool of talented and innovative students and visiting scientists from engineering, computing, and astronomy backgrounds. The instrument can be deployed on several telescopes to get feedback from dealing with real sky data on working telescopes. Adaptive real-time imaging will transform radio astronomy by providing real-time feedback to observers. Calibration of the data is made in close to real time using a model of the sky brightness distribution. The derived calibration parameters are fed back into the imagers and beam formers. This paper proposed a new ubiquitous service platform for JOT (USPIOT) implementation based on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), the platform combines materialized integration with virtual view and realizes real-time collection, real-time main memory database processing to solve the problem such as real-time heterogeneous data integration of different equipments. By providing a service development environment which enables to realize common services description, the USPIOT makes the various service applications and service operations of the IOT extracted, transformed, integrated, and then establishes a stable ubiquitous service implementation environment. Using the information regarding critical events to support decision making in Intensive Care Units would be useful. However it is seldom used in real settings as the information regarding those critical events is difficult to gather and make available in real time. The most usual procedures record only those events that are related to errors. This paper presents a solution to obtain critical events from clinical data. From data collected using an automatic and real-time data acquisition system it is possible to calculate the critical events regarding five variables that are usually monitored in an ICU. These results are presented to the medical and nursing staff in a friendly and intuitive mode. Using a color code our system provides visual warnings related to the evolution of the monitored variables values. Actually, a quick glance allows doctors to get a high level overview of the patient's condition
