Effective environmental monitoring is key in our rapidly changing world, where environmental metrics such as temperature, humidity, and air quality can unexpectedly fluctuate and cause health risks and ecological imbalances and alter informed policymaking. Traditional monitoring paradigms, often associated with latency and high costs, are becoming progressively inadequate for real-time data analysis and decision-making demands. Addressing this critical gap, this paper unveils a cost-effective option for leveraging Aerial Vehicles. The Tello EDU drone, integrated with highly accurate sensors and interfaced with a Raspberry Pi 4B for advanced data processing, brings to life a potential replacement for current environmental monitoring systems. The paper delineates a comprehensive system architecture that synergizes airborne sensing with ground-level data synthesis, enabling instantaneous environmental analytics. Our approach focuses on a new era of community-centric and governance-responsive environmental surveillance. Preliminary results are promising, showcasing the proposed system's capability to transcend the limitations of existing methodologies by delivering a more efficient and scalable solution for environmental oversight.

3-D imaging of blood flow based on 2-D ultrasound scanning and position sensor information can be used to portray clinical information not currently available in vascular and peripheral imaging. During surgery, information of blood flow is important to identify and avoid damage to important vessels. 3-D intraoperative ultrasound flow imaging has proven useful in this respect. However, due to Doppler angle-dependencies and the complexity of the vascular architecture, the generated 3-D image of blood vessels often have drop-outs in the vessel structure. In this work we aim to reduce the number of dropouts in the 3-D blood flow images by combining 2-D flow images with different transmit angles. The compounded 2-D images are further reconstructed to a 3-D flow image based on information from an accurate position sensor system. The method was implemented on a research ultrasound scanner for real-time processing of the data, and in vitro trials showed promising results. The method also showed promising results in vivo using a clinical approved high-end scanner, improving the 3-D image quality of the feeding arteries of an arteriovenous malformation.

The integration of Deep Q-Networks (DQN) with emerging 5G technologies heralds a new era in the real-time prediction and management of flight trajectories, leveraging the unparalleled speed, connectivity, and low latency of 5G to enhance aviation safety and efficiency. Traditional flight trajectory prediction models often struggle with the dynamic complexities of aviation environments, failing to account for sudden atmospheric changes, variable aircraft behaviors, and congested airspaces. This research introduces a novel approach that combines the real-time data transmission capabilities of 5G technology with the advanced predictive power of DQNs. By doing so, it aims to develop a system capable of analyzing extensive flight data and environmental variables instantaneously, thus predicting and optimizing flight paths with unprecedented accuracy. The study outlines the methodology for employing DQN models that utilize state spaces encompassing aircraft positions, velocities, and various flight parameters. Actions within these state spaces represent potential adjustments to the flight path, with a reward function designed to prioritize safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Utilizing both historical and live flight data, the model is trained to forecast optimal trajectories, maximizing overall operational benefits. The integration of 5G technology ensures timely updates to the model, enhancing its responsiveness to changing conditions. This paper demonstrates the potential of this integrated approach through the visualization of predicted 3D flight trajectories, emphasizing paths that maximize safety and efficiency. The findings suggest that the fusion of DQNs with 5G technology could significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of flight trajectory predictions, offering substantial benefits in terms of safety, airspace management efficiency, and cost reduction. The article discusses the challenges of real-time data processing and analyzes various methods used to solve them, with a focus on image processing. Due to the increasing number of tumors, new interventional Computed Tomography (CT) procedures have been proposed that aim to optimize workflow, time-effective diagnosis and treatments. To support tumor ablation procedures, CT scanners must pre-process 2D projections and reconstruct 3D slices of the human body in real time, while data are acquired. This paper proposes a lightweight processing architecture for MPSoC-FPGA that performs the "CT pre-processing phase" on the fly;this phase consists of the pixel processing of 2D images. It is also suitable for exploring different data formats that can be selected at design time to improve performance while keeping image quality. This article focuses on the cosine and redundancy weighting steps, which can not be implemented following the standard method on embedded MPSoC-FPGA, due to the high resource utilization costs of their arithmetic operations. Therefore, this work proposes different optimizations that result in a reduction of the number of operations to compute and the amount of on-chip memory required in comparison to the standard algorithm. Finally, the proposed architecture has been implemented and instantiated within a Control data Acquisition System (CDAS) architecture running on the XC7Z045 AMD-Xilinx MPSoC-FPGA and integrated into an open-interface CT scanner assembled in our laboratory. Here, the optimized weighting steps use up to 33.8 times fewer DSPs than the implementation based on the standard solution. Furthermore, it adds only 80 ns of latency, making it 7.9 times faster than the implementation based on the standard solution.

This paper presents an advanced estimation algorithm for improving obstacle detection in maritime navigation by integrating data from Velodyne LiDAR HDL-32E and a ZED2I depth camera on the Riptide Unmanned Surface Vehicle. Utilizing a pre-trained YOLOv8L model, the ZED2I camera identifies objects and estimates distances using RGB and depth data. The LiDAR system, developed in Python and C++, features adaptive clustering and an obstacle detector, aligning its point cloud to a 110-degree field of view to match the camera's perspective. A specialized ROS node facilitates data fusion by prioritizing ZED2I camera data, enhancing detection accuracy through comparisons with LiDAR data. Extensive testing, including calibration adjustments like Z-axis alignment and a 4 cm offset correction between the camera and LiDAR, has demonstrated the system's refined accuracy in controlled tests, underscoring the necessity of continuous calibration. This approach exemplifies the benefits of hybrid data management and precise sensor alignment in enhancing maritime navigation safety.

As a fundamental operation in various LBS (Location Based Service) applications, the trajectory similarity search has long been a performance bottleneck in applications like (e.g., traffic optimization and contact tracing). When handling streaming trajectory data, the variable workload and stateful compute requirement are two crucial challenges that further complicate the problem. Distributed microservice, a mainstream industrial software design architecture, is the preferred way to address such issues. However, the trajectory instance will inevitably be split under the parallel framework. Therefore, how to distribute trajectory data among the parallel processing tasks in a real-time and lightweight manner is the crux. In this paper, we propose a Microservice-based real-time processing framework for streaming trajectory similarity search, called Misty, which effectively reduces the update cost of the secondary index and supports high scalability. Moreover, on top of Misty, we can build resilient and stateful cloud-native applications. Misty is composed of the assembler, index, coordinator, and executor. Specifically, the assembler and the index module ensure retrieval performance, while the coordinator and executor module enable the system with elastic scaling. Extensive experimental studies on real-world data demonstrate higher query throughput and lower latency over traditional approaches.

The Wind Float is a semi-submersible floating foundation supporting multi-megawatt wind turbines. A full-scale 2MW Wind Float demonstration unit was installed off the coast of Portugal in October 2011. Many instruments are installed on this prototype to measure the environmental conditions and the response of the platform at the site. The first section of the paper focuses on the validation of the wave measurements obtained from two radar-based wave probes onboard the platform. The wave elevation at the site is reconstructed and typical wave statistics are computed. The results are compared and validated with independent buoy measurements close to site. The second section of the paper presents estimates of prevailing wave direction and directional wave spectra based on platform motions. These results are also benchmarked with onsite buoy measurements.

5G technology is a noteworthy achievement in developing wireless communication, offering unparalleled speed, little delay, and extensive connection. This article examines the profound influence of 5G on the (IoT), emphasizing how 5G's advanced features enable the smooth incorporation of IoT devices in several industries. 5G facilitates real-time data processing and transmission, which is essential for applications in smart cities, healthcare, industrial automation, and autonomous cars, due to its improved data transfer speeds and dependability. The study explores the technological connections between 5G and IoT, analyzing how network slicing, edge computing, and massive MIMO enhance the effectiveness and scalability of IoT systems. Moreover, it examines the difficulties and possibilities brought about by this merging, including issues of security, distribution of spectrum, and the need for novel regulatory structures. In conclusion, this article highlights the capacity of 5G to completely transform the (IoT), by stimulating progress and promoting a more interconnected and smarter global society.
