Current approaches towards distributed real-time java are mainly based on the idea of having user-defined remote objects, allocated in servers that may be invoked from clients. This article extends this support included in real-time java with an extension called Remote Memory Areas (RMAs). RMAs offer a method that allows running user-defined code in a generic server that may be reused by several applications (i.e., it does not require defining one type of remote sever per application). The paper describes the abstraction, which is backward compatible with main approaches in distributed real-time java, and provides empirical evidence on its performance on a use-case application.

The run-time characteristics of java, such as high frequency of method invocation, dynamic dispatching and dynamic loading, make java more difficult than other object-oriented programming languages, such as C++ ,for conducting Worst-Case Execution time (WCET) analysis. To offer a more flexible way to develop object-oriented real-time applications in the realtime java environment without loss of predicability and performance, we propose a novel gain time reclaiming framework integrated with WCET analysis. This paper demonstrates how to improve the utilisation and performance of the whole system by reclaiming gain time at run-time. Our approach shows that integrating WCET with gain time reclaiming can not only provide a more flexible environment, but it also does not necessarily result in unsafe or unpredictable timing behaviour.

A software locking mechanism commonly protects shared resources for multithreaded applications. This mechanism can, especially in chip-multiprocessor systems, result in a large synchronization overhead. For real-time systems in particular, this overhead increases the worst-case execution time and may void a task set's schedulability. This paper presents 2 hardware locking mechanisms to reduce the worst-case time required to acquire and release synchronization locks. These solutions are implemented for the chip-multiprocessor version of the java Optimized Processor. The 2 hardware locking mechanisms are compared with a software locking solution as well as the original locking system of the processor. The hardware cost and performance are evaluated for all presented locking mechanisms. The performance of the better-performing hardware locks is comparable with that of the original single global lock when contending for the same lock. When several noncontending locks are used, the hardware locks enable true concurrency for critical sections. Benchmarks show that using the hardware locks yields performance ranging from no worse than the original locks to more than twice their best performance. This improvement can allow a larger number of real-time tasks to be reliably scheduled on a multiprocessor real-time platform. Copyright (C) 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Today's trend in real-time systems reveals the necessity of new technologies to easy their development and maintenance. Among others, some interesting alternatives are found in high-level real-time programming languages, better development models, or simple architectures and models. From the perspective of real-time java, a recent real-time programming language, this paper offers an architecture (and its corresponding java interfaces) to help the development of an upcoming distributed real-time technology for java (named DRTSJ). To that end it describes a neutral architecture based on java's Remote Method Invocation (RMI) and The real-time Specification for java (RTSJ). The empirical evidences included in the paper offer also interesting clues on the performance this technology may deliver.

Component frameworks simplify development of enterprise systems and enable code reuse, but most frameworks are unpredictable and hence unsuitable for embedded or real-time systems. Similarly, java is increasingly being used to build embedded system software because of its portability and ease of use. The real-time Specification for java (RTSJ) reduces the unpredictability in java execution times by eliminating the need for a garbage collector. However, it introduces programming complexity that makes it difficult to build non-trivial applications. To bring the advantages of java component development to DRE systems, while simultaneously simplifying the use of RTSJ, therefore, we have developed a new lightweight component model for RTSJ called Compadres. Compadres offers the following advantages: 1) Simple component definition in java that abstracts away RTSJ memory management complexity;2) System assembly from components by connecting ports that communicate through strongly-typed objects;3) The Compadres compiler that automatically generates the scoped memory architecture for components, while the component framework handles communication between the components. To validate this work, we construct a non-trivial example application using the component framework, a simple real-time CORBA implementation. We then analyze the performance and efficiency of our component example versus a non-component example, RTZen. Our measurements show that our Compadres example built with components incurs only minor time overhead as compared to a comparable hand-coded example.

java has recently joined C and C++ as a development platform for real-time and embedded applications. java's garbage collection, while generally a useful feature, can be problematic for these applications: garbage collection occurs at unpredictable times and its latency is typically unbounded. This can compromise necessary real-time guarantees. To overcome these limitations, the real-time for java Expert Group (RTJEG) proposed the real-time Specification for java (RTSJ), which introduced new memory models and new threads to utilize those models. One such memory model uses scoped-memory areas, which work best in the context of a NoHeapreal-timeThread (NHRT). Although much work has been done with scoped-memory areas and NHRTs, there is no system-independent analysis of their costs. In this article we present an asymptotic analysis for RTSJ scoped-memory areas and NHRTs.

The real-time Specification for java (RTSJ) extends the java memory model through immortal and scoped memory regions to reduce the timing-indeterminism caused by garbage collection. Since scoped regions can be nested, RTSJ imposes strict assignment rules to avoid dangling pointers. These rules stabilise that an object shall not reference any object whose lifetime could be shorter than they own. Then references among two objects within different scoped regions are allowed only in one direction (i.e., from objects within region r1 to region r2, but never from r2 to r1). In order to support RTSJ component-based applications, we require controlled violations of the assignment rules to have bidirectional references among objects within two different scopes.

The scoped-memory feature is central to the real-time Specification for java. It allows greater control over memory management, in particular the deallocation of objects without the use of a garbage collector. To preserve the safety of storage references associated with java(TM) since its inception, the use of scoped memory is constrained by a set of rules in the specification. While a program's adherence to the rules can be partially checked at compile-time, undecidability issues imply that some-perhaps, many-checks may be required at run-time. Poor implementations of those run-time checks could adversely affect overall performance and predictability, the latter being a founding principle of the specification. In this paper we present efficient algorithms for managing scoped memories and the checks they impose on programs. Implementations and results published to date require time linear in the depth of scope nesting;our algorithms operate in constant time. We describe our approach and present experiments quantifying the gains in efficiency.

End-to-end middleware predictability is essential to support quality of service (QoS) capabilities needed by distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) applications. real-time CORBA is a middleware standard that allows DRE applications to allocate, schedule, and control the QoS of CPU, memory, and networking resources. Existing real-time CORBA solutions are implemented in C++, which is generally more complicated and error-prone to program than java. The real-time Specification for java (RTSJ) provides extensions that enable java to be used for developing DRE systems. real-time CORBA does not currently leverage key RTSJ features, such as scoped memory and real-time threads. Thus, integration of real-time CORBA and RTSJ is essential to ensure the predictability required for java-based DRE applications. This paper provides the following contributions to the study of middleware for DRE applications. First we analyze the architecture of ZEN, our implementation of real-time CORBA, identifying sources for the application of RTSJ features. Second, we describe how RTSJ features, such as scoped memory and real-time threads, can be associated with key ORB components to enhance the predictability of DRE applications using real-time CORBA and the RTSJ. Third, we perform preliminary qualitative and quantitative analysis of predictability enhancements arising from our application of RTSJ features. Our results show that use of RTSJ features can considerably improve the predictability of DRE applications written using real-time CORBA and real-time java.

Currently, java has been gradually applied in such areas as robotics, industrial control, and other embedded real-time applications owning to its advantages like platform independence, robustness, security, etc. In order to improve the performance of java's execution engine for embedded real-time applications, an embedded real-time java processor JPOR-32 (32-bit java Processor Optimized for RTSJ) is designed. In this paper, the memory access mechanism of JPOR-32 is presented. In JPOR-32, the optimized memory organization structure is designed to implement the runtime data areas of the java virtual machine (JVM). Based on it, with the preprocessing operation, the memory access instructions optimization is implemented as well. The preprocessing operation enables the JVM's runtime operations involving dynamic loading, verification, preparation, resolution, etc. to be handled in advance. It not only provides an efficient and convenient way to implement memory access, but also makes the contribution to the WCET predictability. As to the memory management, in accordance with the real-time Specification for java (RTSJ), garbage collection (GC) is not allowed in the immortal memory as well as the scoped memory, and in the heap, JPOR-32 adopts improved GC scheme suitable for embedded real-time java environment. Besides, with the architectural support of the pipelined datapath, JPOR-32 provides effective supports for efficient and predictable memory access.
