Integration of large-scale renewable energy sources is the future of smart grids. However, weather conditions significantly affect the generation of renewable energy sources, which causes supply-side uncertainties. Even with the current state-of-the-art technologies, weather conditions, solar radiance, etc., can be predicted nearly accurately, only a few minutes early. Existing intelligent grid optimization methods used to solve Optimal Power Flow (OPF) consider day-ahead planning for congestion management and generator rescheduling. Current OPF-based methods suffer many drawbacks for the large grid, like longer computation time and local convergence issues, and are computationally expensive. This drawback makes existing OPF methods unsuitable for the congestion management problem when considering supply-side uncertainties, mainly due to the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources. Over the years, Reinforcement Learning (RL) methods have gained popularity for solving constrained optimization tasks at scale. However, even if the existing Deep-RL (DRL) based policies perform best for large and complex tasks, the lack of interpretability due to using deep neural networks at their core makes them not a trustworthy solution when safety constraints like congestion-free operation are considered. Therefore, to ensure that DRL policies are used safely in critical infrastructures like smart grids, this paper proposes a centralized barrier-penalty-based DRL method that utilizes the Adaptive Safety Shield framework as an extra layer of safety. The DRL-based policy is trained to find the economically optimal grid state while considering the barrier penalty value to reduce branch loads. Besides, the Adaptive Safety Shield is trained to learn the congestion criteria and guide the RL in avoiding such scenarios during exploration. We have also empirically shown that the proposed method has demonstrated similar or better performance than the current OPF-based methods.

This paper presents a real-time optical flow algorithm for a vision-based guidance of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The optical flow algorithm detects a moving target, and obtains the optical position and optical flow vectors of the target from the image sequence. Then, a vision-based guidance of the UAV is designed to follow the moving target. Additionally, the control law of the imaging seeker uses visual information from the image sequence for target tracking. The method was tested on a 3 degree of freedom (3DOF) dual-rotor UAV with a video camera and the result proved the effectiveness of this method.

This paper presents a new method to detect small and rapid movements in real-time with a single L1-GPS receiver. The method is based on the prediction of single differences between satellites by appropriate Filter methods. The movements' detection is based, on the one hand, on displacements computed with multiple prediction lengths, and on the other hand, on the time series of displacements computed with the previous epochs. The accuracy of this method is demonstrated by real 10-[Hz] observations with two L1-receivers. One antenna remained completely static, while characteristic movements were applied on the other. This allow us to compare on the one hand the displacements of the displaced antenna estimated by G-MoDe with standard differential kinematic processing and on the other hand the resolution and the noise behavior of G-MoDe applied on the data of the static antenna. The results indicate that, in good conditions, horizontal movements and of short duration and oscillatory movements above 5mm amplitude are significantly detected (95%).

Levcopolous and Overmars [12] describe a search tree in which the time to insert or delete a key is O(1) once the position of the key to be inserted or deleted was known. Their data structure does not support fingers, pointers to points of high access or update activity in the set such that access and update operations in the vicinity of a finger are particularly efficient [3, 8, 10, 11, 15]. Levcopolous and Overmars leave as an open question whether a data structure can be designed which allowed updates in constant time and supports fingers. We answer the question in the affirmative by giving an algorithm in the RAM with logarithmic word size model [1]. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1990.

Installation of a Photovoltaic (PV) system needs an accurate design and evaluation test for the performance of its modules before using them in a system. This can be fulfilled with high accuracy in the laboratory without using commercial PV modules by using a PV emulator. The PV emulator introduces a suitable tool which easily permits emulating PV system component with different parameters, teaching its characteristic and training researchers in this field. The main purpose of this paper is introducing the development of a Photovoltaics (PV) emulator has the capability of emulate commercial PV modules with different parameters and under different environmental condition (irradiance or temperature change), constructing a PV array based on the series and parallel numbers of modules. The PV emulator was implemented using a real-time algorithm representing the PV array mathematical model and generating the reference output power from a programmable DC power supply. The PV model is simulated in MATLAB and interfaced to the real world through dSPACE using an evolutionary graphic user interface (GUI). This laboratory PV emulator is tested with real-time execution of PV model for the steady state and dynamic operating conditions.

The paper addresses the problem of pencil beam synthesis for large array antenna, such as the Ku/Ka-satellite receiving antenna. For such a problem, the conventional phase-shift-only algorithm would achieve a fixed sidelobe level (SLL), for instance, the first SLL is -13.46 dB for uniform array antenna. Many algorithms based on convex technique are designed to further suppress the SLL to an expected level. However, all of those algorithms are time-consuming, especially for large array antenna system. To overcome the time-consuming disadvantage, a deterministic algorithm based on density tapering technique is proposed. The desired beam-pattern is assumed to follow a Gaussian function with its standard deviation controlling the beam. The proposed algorithm tries to generate a beam pattern as similar to the desired one as possible by optimizing the elements excitation. The solution to the optimal elements excitation has an explicit form with respect to the antenna parameters, thus can be solved in real-time. Simulations are carried out by comparing with the existed algorithms to assess the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and some conclusions are remarked.

The underwater cleaning robot works in an unknown environment, where knowing the real-time surroundings and cleaning situation is necessary. This paper proposes a novel approach to realize the panoramic navigation of the underwater cleaning robot. First, we select several feature points manually to calculate the images' relative location. Second, we solve the transformation matrix from the original view to the front view. Third, we build a matrix library marked by the robot's attitude. Fourth, the panoramic navigation system makes the real-time image projection and stitching based on the attitude of the robot. We use the fade-out fusion to eliminate the image stitching gap, which is time-efficient. This panoramic system uses the pre-set parameters to make the real-time image process, instead of doing the feature detection or matching, which could increase the efficiency significantly.

We propose a highly parallelizable Newton-type method for nonlinear model predictive control by exploiting the particular structure of the associated Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. These equations are approximately decoupled into single step subproblems along the prediction horizon for parallelization. The coupling variable of each subproblem is approximated toward its optimal value by a simple but effective method in every iteration. The proposed algorithm is applied to control a quadrotor. The numerical simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is highly parallelizable and converges with only a few iterations even to a high accuracy. Temporal exposure bracketing is a simple and low cost technique to generate a high dynamic range (HDR) images. This technique is widely used to recover the whole dynamic range of a scene by selecting the adequate number of low dynamic range (LDR) images to be fused. Temporal exposure bracketing technique is introduced to be used for static scenes and it cannot be applied directly for dynamic scenes since camera or object motion in bracketed exposures creates ghosts in the resulting HDR image. In this paper we propose a HDR algorithm modification to remove ghost artifact and we present a real-time implementation of this method on a smart camera (HDR video stream 1280 x 1024 at 60fps). We present experimental results to show the ghost removing efficiency of our implemented method.

This paper proposes a racket control method for returning a table tennis ball to a reference position with a desired translational/rotational velocity. The method determines the racket's state, i.e., the racket's striking posture and translational velocity by using two physical models: racket rebound model and aerodynamics model. The paper makes clear what the racket can control among the reference position, translational and rotational velocities. The algorithm of determining the racket's state is derived by solving nonlinear equations and solving two points problems of differential equation. Two approximate aerodynamic models are proposed for real-time treatments. Then numerical simulations show effectiveness of the proposed methods.
