Knowledge of the lithospheric structure is key to understanding the seismotectonic characteristics of convergent margins. In this study, we provide a robust one-dimensional velocity model for the Anelo region, located within the Neuquen extensional basin in Argentina, with the aim of illuminating the lithospheric characteristics of the back-arc region of the southern central Andes. Data from a temporary network of broadband stations operational from October 2014 to March 2020 was utilized. We employed two distinct seismological techniques for obtaining models with varying resolutions at multiple scales and depths. On the one hand, upper thin layers were obtained by the inversion of a model based on hypocenters from local earthquakes, and on the other, we calculated receiver functions to estimate thicker and deeper layers. By combining both methods we were able to obtain a joint and accurate velocity model, a crucial tool for conducting seismicity studies in the region and achieving precise determinations of earthquake locations. Moreover, the analysis of velocity variations offers valuable insights into the complex lithospheric structure beneath the study area, shedding light on the poorly understood seismotectonic activity in the Andean retroarc. We suggest that the presence of a weakened or hot lithospheric mantle beneath the southern Neuquen Basin may be linked to the Payenia mantle anomaly. This anomaly likely softens the upper plate, concentrating deformation and intraplate seismicity, as documented in the vicinity of the study area.

Spatial distribution of the Mohorovicic discontinuity beneath northeastern Mexico based on receiver functions from acceleration and velocity records

We obtained 805 receiver functions from velocity data of four permanent and six temporary seismic stations and 38 from acceleration data of three permanent stations located in northeastern Mexico to get the spatial distribution of the Mohorovicic (Moho) discontinuity in that region. To prove the feasibility of using acceleration records to obtain receiver functions, we obtain receiver functions from velocity and acceleration records from instruments located less than 1 m from each other at the permanent stations. We conclude that it is possible to use the acceleration data by filtering and integrating it. We estimated the depth of the Moho discontinuity under each station. We observed that the thickness of the crust is thicker under the Basin and Range and Sierra Madre Oriental provinces to the west, reaching values greater than 33 km and being, on average, 32 +/- 2 km. Then, the crust gets thinner in the Sabinas and Magiscatzin basins to the east, with an average thickness of 29 +/- 2 km.

High-resolution Moho depth and V_(p)/V_(s) ratio distributions in northeast China from joint inversion of receiver functions and gravity data and their geological implications

Lithospheric structure of Northeast China from dense array receiver functions: Insight into two-side subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean plate

A northwest-southeast trending high-density seismic array was deployed in the southern Xing'an-Mongolian Orogenic Belt, spanning the Songliao basin, the North-South gravity gradient lineament, the Great Xing'an Mountains, and the Erlian basin. The high-density seismic array included 1000 stations with an interval of -0.5 km. We image the lithospheric structure using the teleseismic receiver function method. Our results show that the Moho depth gradually increases from -35 km beneath the Songliao basin to -40 km beneath the Great Xing'an Mountains. In the vicinity of the North-South gravity lineament, the Moho is slightly inclined with a continuous depth of -5 km, which forms a transition zone from the basin to the orogenic belt. A middle crustal discontinuity, or the Conrad discontinuity, is imaged beneath the Songliao-Xilinhot block and the northern margin of the North China Craton. The Conrad and Moho discontinuities beneath the suture zones show traces of bidirectional subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean plate. Meanwhile, we find subtle changes in the receiver functions due to variations in the sedimentary layer thickness. The sedimentary layer beneath the southern Songliao basin is estimated to be -1.2 km thick and it thins toward its edge. Moreover, we find a middle lithospheric discontinuity below the Moho under the Songliao-Xilinhot block. Combining with previous findings, we deem that the middle lithospheric discontinuity reflects a high-temperature layer in the upper lithosphere mantle associated with hot and wet upwelling flows in the big mantle wedge under NE China.

Boundary and volumetric sensitivity kernels of teleseismic receiver functions for mantle discontinuities in the transition zone

Teleseismic receiver functions are widely used to map the depth and topography of various major discontinuities in the Earth's mantle. To determine what precisely contributes to the receiver functions, we applied the adjoint method of full waveform inversion to calculate their sensitivity kernels. These kernels illustrate the extend to which model parameters may influence the waveforms. We calculated synthetic data for a realistic event measured at a realistic receiver array, whereby we focused on the waveforms of the P410s and P660s phases, that convert a P to an S wave at the 410- and 660-discontinuity, respectively. We calculated both the volumetric sensitivity kernels for density, P- and S-wave speeds, as well as boundary kernels that illustrate receiver functions' sensitivity to topography on the discontinuity. In the boundary kernels, we observe that receiver functions are highly sensitive to a discontinuity's topography, in particular to an area surrounding the conversion point with a radius comparable to the Fresnel zone. However, the volumetric kernels illustrate a sensitivity to model parameters in large areas of the mantle. This includes sensitivity to the Fresnel zone of the converted wave far before the conversion, as well as sensitivity to scatterers of other phases. We therefore conclude that receiver functions are sensitive to the topography of discontinuities. However, effects of an incorrect velocity model, even far from the conversion point, may erroneously be projected onto the topography of the discontinuity. Therefore, a simultaneous inversion of topography and velocity parameters is required to image topography with high accuracy.

Applicability of receiver functions in a Subduction Zone: Case Study of the Avacha Bay Area

The peculiarities of waveforms of the P and S receiver functions, constructed from the records of three closely located broadband seismic stations, are studied. The stations are located in the Avacha Bay area, near the subducting part of the Pacific Plate. This is an inclined slab, which is characterized by higher seismic velocities and can cause complex patterns of seismic waves, thus distorting the waveforms of receiver functions. In order to reveal the degree of such influence, we calculated two pairs of receiver functions. To calculate the first pair, we used the seismic events where seismic waves traveled through the subducting oceanic slab;in the case of the second pair, the waves did not travel through the slab. It is shown that converted and multiple waves formed at the boundaries of the high-velocity layer considerable distort the shapes of P receiver functions beginning approximately 30 seconds after the main arrival. The subducting slab does not show any considerable effect on the records of the S receiver function. This fact empirically supports the applicability of local one-dimensional models for interpreting the receiver functions. The seismic noise, generated by the oceanic slab, limits the maximum depth of these models at around 200 km in the study area.

Crustal and uppermost mantle structure of the northeastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau from joint inversion of surface wave dispersions and receiver functions with P velocity constraints

Lithospheric structure beneath the northeastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is of vital significance for studying the geodynamic processes of crustal thickening and expansion of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. We conducted a joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave dispersions with P-wave velocity constraints using data from the Chin Array Ⅱ temporary stations deployed across the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Prior to joint inversion, we applied the H-κ-c method(Li JT et al., 2019) to the receiver function data in order to correct for the back-azimuthal variations in the arrival times of Ps phases and crustal multiples caused by crustal anisotropy and dipping interfaces. High-resolution images of vS, crustal thickness, and vP/vSstructures in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau were simultaneously derived from the joint inversion. The seismic images reveal that crustal thickness decreases outward from the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. The stable interiors of the Ordos and Alxa blocks exhibited higher velocities and lower crustal vP/vSratios. While, lower velocities and higher vP/vSratios were observed beneath the Qilian Orogen and Songpan-Ganzi terrane(SPGZ), which are geologically active and mechanically weak, especially in the mid-lower *** or thermal erosion of the lithosphere triggered by hot asthenospheric flow contributes to the observed uppermost mantle low-velocity zones(LVZs) in the SPGZ. The crustal thickness, vS, and vP/vSratios suggest that whole lithospheric shortening is a plausible mechanism for crustal thickening in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, supporting the idea of coupled lithospheric-scale deformation in this region.

Evidence of a Low-Velocity Zone in the Upper Mantle Beneath Cumbre Vieja Volcano (Canary Islands) Through receiver functions Analysis

Oceanic volcanic islands have a complex internal structure due to their geological evolution. La Palma is the second youngest in the Canary Islands. Historical eruptions occurred in the Cumbre Vieja (CV) volcanic system, including the last 2021 Tajogaite eruption. The seismicity before, during, and after the Tajogaite eruption provides valuable information for a better understanding of deep volcanic processes. We applied the receiver function technique to image the crustal and upper mantle structures beneath the CV volcanic complex. We investigated the first 50 km of the lithosphere, identifying various seismic discontinuities. After a thin layer of recent volcanic rocks, we found a layer corresponding to the old oceanic crust. Beneath the Moho, we found a significant decrease in the seismic velocities until about 37 km of depth. This low-velocity layer corresponds to a zone of partial melting with interconnected magmatic chambers that feed the volcanic activity in CV. Oceanic volcanic islands have a complex internal structure. Our study is important to understand volcanic activity in its geodynamic context better. The last eruption occurred in the Cumbre Vieja volcanic complex on La Palma Island (2021) and had an unexpected magnitude in terms of lava volume, explosivity, and a significant impact on the economy and society of the island. This study used receiver function analysis to image the lithosphere up to a depth of 50 km. This seismological technique exploits the recordings of teleseismic events (i.e., earthquakes located between 30 and 90 degrees from the stations) for this purpose. We used an advanced inversion technique to study the structure of the crust and the upper mantle beneath the volcano. The most relevant finding is a zone of anomalous low seismic velocities extending from 13 to 37 km depth. Multigenetic Origin of the X-Discontinuity Below Continents: Insights From African receiver functions

Constraints on chemical heterogeneities in the upper mantle may be derived from studying the seismically observable impedance contrasts that they produce. Away from subduction zones, several causal mechanisms are possible to explain the intermittently observed X-discontinuity (X) at 230-350 km depth: the coesite-stishovite phase transition, the enstatite to clinoenstatite phase transition, and/or carbonated silicate melting, all requiring a local enrichment of basalt. Africa hosts a broad range of terranes, from Precambrian cores to Cenozoic hotspots with or without lowermost mantle origins. With the absence of subduction below the margins of the African plate for >0.5 Ga, Africa presents an ideal study locale to explore the origins of the X. Traditional receiver function (RF) approaches used to map seismic discontinuities, such as common conversion-point stacking, ignore slowness information crucial for discriminating converted upper mantle phases from surface multiples. By manually assessing depth and slowness stacks for 1 degrees radius overlapping bins, normalized vote mapping of RF stacks is used to robustly assess the spatial distribution of converted upper mantle phases. The X is mapped beneath Africa at 233-340 km depth, revealing patches of heterogeneity proximal to mantle upwellings in Afar, Canaries, Cape Verde, East Africa, Hoggar, and Reunion with further observations beneath Cameroon, Madagascar, and Morocco. There is a lack of an X beneath southern Africa and strikingly, the magmatic eastern rift branch of the southern East African Rift. With no relationships existing between depth and amplitudes of observed X and estimated mantle temperatures, multiple causal mechanisms are required across a range of continental geodynamic settings.
