The main objective of the MPEG reconfigurable video coding (RVC) standard is to establish a framework for a more flexible usage of standard video coding technology. The framework not only supports multiple standards and new coding configurations, but also provides an incremental and modular approach to innovation in video compression development and design. This paper provides an overview of the main objectives of RVC, standard accompanied with a presentation of the components of the framework for both normative parts and supporting tools useful for the final implementation of RVC codecs. These elements include: the video Tool Library (VTL), the new standard RVC-CAL language used for the specification of the library, the Bitstream Syntax Description (BSD) used for the specification of the compressed bitstreams, as well as the Functional unit Network Description (FND) that constitutes the specification of a modular library. Technologies and tools that support the RVC standard are also briefly introduced.

video coding technology in the last 20 years has evolved producing a variety of different and complex algorithms and coding standards. So far the specification of such standards, and of the algorithms that build them, has been done case by case providing monolithic textual and reference software specifications in different forms and programming languages. However, very little attention has been given to provide a specification formalism that explicitly presents common components between standards, and the incremental modifications of such monolithic standards. The MPEG reconfigurable video coding (RVC) framework is a new ISO standard currently under its final stage of standardization, aiming at providing video codec specifications at the level of library components instead of monolithic algorithms. The new concept is to be able to specify a decoder of an existing standard or a completely new configuration that may better satisfy application-specific constraints by selecting standard components from a library of standard coding algorithms. The possibility of dynamic configuration and reconfiguration of codecs also requires new methodologies and new tools for describing the new bitstream syntaxes and the parsers of such new codecs. The RVC framework is based on the usage of a new actor/ dataflow oriented language called CAL for the specification of the standard library and instantiation of the RVC decoder model. This language has been specifically designed for modeling complex signal processing systems. CAL dataflow models expose the intrinsic concurrency of the algorithms by employing the notions of actor programming and dataflow. The paper gives an overview of the concepts and technologies building the standard RVC framework and the non standard tools supporting the RVC model from the instantiation and simulation of the CAL model to software and/or hardware code synthesis.

video coding technology has evolved in the past years into a variety of different and complex algorithms. So far the specifications of such standard algorithms have been done case by case, providing monolithic textual and reference software specifications, but without paying any attention to the possibility of further improvements of such monolithic standards. The MPEG reconfigurable video coding (RVC) framework is a new ISO/IEC standard, currently under its final stage of development aiming at providing video codec specifications at the level of coding tools instead of monolithic descriptions. The possibility to select a subset of standard video coding algorithms to specify a decoder that satisfies application specific constraints is very attractive. However, such possibility to reconfigure codecs requires systematic procedures and tools capable of describing the new bitstream syntaxes of such new codecs. Moreover, it becomes also necessary to generate the associated parsers, capable of parsing the new bitstreams. This paper further explains the problem and describes the technologies used to describe new bitstream syntaxes. Additionally, the paper describes the methodologies and the tools for the validation of bitstream syntaxes descriptions as well as a systematic procedure for automatically synthesizing parsers from the bitstream descriptions.

Energy estimation models for video decoders: reconfigurable video coding-CAL case-study

In this study, a platform-independent energy estimation methodology is proposed to estimate the energy consumption of reconfigurable video coding (RVC)-CAL video codec specifications. This methodology is based on the performance monitoring counters (PMCs) of embedded platforms and demonstrates its portability, simplicity and accuracy for on-line estimation. It has two off-line procedure stages: the former, which automatically identifies the most appropriate PMCs with no specific detailed knowledge of the employed platform, and the latter, which trains the model using either a linear regression or a multivariable adaptive regression splines (MARS) method. Experimenting on an RVC-CAL decoder, the proposed PMC-driven model can achieve an average estimation error <10%. In addition, the maximal model computation overhead is 4.04%. The results show that the training video sequence has significant influence on the model accuracy. An experimental metric is introduced to achieve more stable accurate models based on a combination of training sequences. Furthermore, a comparison demonstrates better predictive ability of MARS techniques in scenarios with multi-core platforms. Finally, the experimental results show a good potential of energy efficiency improvement when the estimation model is combined into the RVC framework. In two different scenarios, the battery lifetime is increased 5.16% and 20.9%, respectively.

Based on concurrent exploration of both algorithm and architecture, this paper introduces an efficient verification methodology that targets at comprehensive functional verification throughout different levels of design granularities for multi-format media SoC's with applications in MPEG's reconfigurable video coding. We present a verification technique that minimizes the number of test patterns but at the same time covering multiple profiles based on the functional commonalities extracted from multiple coding standards. In addition, algorithmic complexity analysis and dataflow modeling are also used to gain insight into flexible video architecture at early design stage in facilitating more efficient verification environment. Furthermore, an isolation technique is also presented for independent verification of coarse grain modules in the system level. We have shown that this verification methodology can effectively enhance the reliability and efficiency of SoC's with high complexity and reconfigurability.

Software Code Generation for the RVC-CAL Language

The MPEG reconfigurable video coding (RVC) framework is a new standard under development by MPEG that aims at providing a unified high-level specification of current and future MPEG video coding technologies using dataflow models. In this framework, a decoder is built as a configuration of video coding modules taken from the standard MPEG toolbox library or proprietary libraries. The elements of the library are specified by a textual description that expresses the I/O behavior of each module and by a reference software written using a subset of the CAL Actor Language named RVC-CAL. A decoder configuration is written in an XML dialect by connecting a set of CAL modules. Code generators are fundamental supports that enable the direct transformation of a high level specification to efficient hardware and software implementations. This paper presents a synthesis tool that from a CAL dataflow program generates C code and an associated SystemC model. The generated code is validated against the original CAL description simulated using the Open Dataflow environment. Experimental results of the translation of two descriptions of an MPEG-4 Simple Profile decoder with different granularities are shown and discussed.

Power reduction in modern embedded systems design is a challenging issue exacerbated by the complexity and heterogeneity of their architecture. In the field of reconfigurable video coding (RVC), to challenge these issues and cut-down time to market, dataflow-based techniques have been adopted. In particular, to master management and composability of dynamically reconfigurable systems, the authors have developed the multi-dataflow composer. Nevertheless, despite the RVC offers several different tools, in its reference design framework power management is still an open issue. To make some steps forward towards filling this gap, in this study, they address power management for coarse-grained reconfigurable systems combining structural and dynamic strategies, both to be applied at the dataflow level.

MPEG reconfigurable video coding (RVC) is a new platform-independent specification methodology chosen by the MPEG community for describing coding standards. This methodology aims at producing abstract decoder models (ADMs) of MPEG decoders as programs described in a dataflow language namely "RVC-CAL Actor Language" (RVC-CAL). RVC-CAL naturally expresses potential parallelism between tasks of an application, which makes an ADM description suitable for implementation to a wide variety of platforms, from uniprocessor systems to FPGAs. MPEG RVC eases the development process of decoders by building decoders at a library-component level instead of using monolithic algorithms, and by providing a library of coding tools standardized in MPEG. This paper presents new mechanisms based on the low level virtual machine that allow the conception of a decoder able to dynamically instantiate several RVC decoder descriptions. This decoder, unlike static decoders generated by RVC tools, keeps de facto the features of an RVC description namely portability, scalability and reconfigurability.

The MPEG reconfigurable video coding working group is developing a new library-based process for building the reference codecs of future MPEG standards, which is based on dataflow and uses an actor language called Cal. The paper presents a code generator producing RTL targeting FPGAs for Cal, outlines its structure, and demonstrates its performance on an MPEG-4 Simple Profile decoder. The resulting implementation is smaller and faster than a comparable RTL reference design, and the second half of the paper discusses some of the reasons for this counter-intuitive result.

CAL Dataflow Components for an MPEG RVC AVC Baseline Encoder

In this paper, an efficient H.264/AVC baseline encoder, described in RVC-CAL actor language, is introduced. The main aim of the paper is twofold: a) to demonstrate the flexibility and ease that is provided by RVC-CAL, which allows for efficient implementation of the presented encoder, and b) to shed light on the advantages that can be brought into the RVC framework by including such encoding tools. The main modules of the designed encoder include: Inter Frame Prediction (Motion Estimation/Compensation), Intra Frame Prediction, and Entropy coding. Descriptions of the designed modules, accompanied with RVC-CAL design issues are provided. A comparison between different development approaches is also provided. The obtained results show that specifying complex video codecs (e.g. H.264/AVC encoder) using RVC-CAL followed by automatic translation into HDL, which is achievable by the tools that support the standard, results in more efficient HW implementation compared to the traditional HW design flow. A discussion that explains the reasons behind such results concludes the paper.
