The elaboration of new and innovative systems such as MPSoC (MultiProcessor System on Chip) which are made up of multiple processors, memories and IPs lies on the designers to achieve a complex codesign work. Specific tools and methods are needed to cope with the increasing complexity of both algorithms and platforms. Our approach to design such systems is based on the usage of a high level of abstraction language called RVC CAL. This language is dataflow oriented and thus points out the concurrency and parallelism of algorithms. Moreover CAL is supported by the OpenDF simulator and by two code generators called CAL2C (software generator) and CAL2HDL (hardware generator). The MPEG expert group has recently elaborated the reconfigurable video coding (RVC) standard which defines the RVC CAL language as reference for MPEG video decoder descriptions. This paper introduces the opportunities to design an innovative system involving hardware and software IPs, embedded processors and memories from a CAL model. Practical results on a FPGA are provided with a codesign solution of an MPEG4 Simple Profile (SP).

The video Tool Library (VTL) is one of the major normative components of the reconfigurable video coding (RVC) standard. It specifies the set of functional units (FUs) that may be interchangeably combined and connected to form different video codecs, with various compression performances and implementation complexities. In this paper, an efficient AVC baseline encoder that is described in CAL is introduced. The encoder is composed of many modules that also exist in other codecs of the same or different standards. This makes them highly reusable within the RVC framework. The main modules of the designed encoder include: Inter Prediction, Intra Prediction, and Entropy coding. Brief descriptions of the designed modules, accompanied with CAL design issues are provided.

In this paper, an on-line energy estimation model has been implemented on an RVC-CAL HEVC decoder. The model is driven by Performance Monitoring Counters and fitted by the MARS method. The estimation results achieve average relative errors less than 10%. In addition, the model computation overhead is less than 0.5%. The model might be employed within the RVC framework to provide an energy-aware decoder reconfiguration.

The MPEG reconfigurable video coding working group is developing a new library-based process for building the reference codecs of future MPEG standards, which is based on dataflow and uses an actor language called CAL. The paper presents a code generator producing RTL targeting FPGAs for CAL, outlines its structure, and demonstrates its performance on an MPEG-4 Simple Profile decoder. The resulting implementation is smaller and faster than a comparable RTL reference design, and the second half of the paper discusses some of the reasons for this counter-intuitive result.

This demonstration system shows a kind of video decoder's implementation in reconfigurable video coding (RVC) framework on Open RVC-CAL Compiler (Orcc) platform. Differently from tradition video decoder, the reconfigurablevideo decoder is not a decoder conforming a special videocoding standard, but dynamically built according to actual bitsteams, which may not conform any standard. The reconfigurablevideo decoder receives not only the compressed video bitstream but also the decoder description. Even though people of all social standings use current mobile devices in the wide spectrum of purpose from entertainment tools to communication means, some issues with real-time video streaming in hostile wireless environment still exist. In this article, we introduce CoSA, a link-aware real-time video streaming system for mobile devices. The proposed system utilizes a 3D camera to distinguish the region of importance (ROI) and non-ROI region within the video frame. Based on the link-state feedback from the receiver, the proposed system allocates a higher bandwidth for the region that is classified as ROI and a lower bandwidth for non-ROI in the video stream by reducing the video's bit rate. We implemented CoSA in a real test-bed where the IEEE 802.11 is employed as a medium for wireless networking. Furthermore, we verified the effectiveness of the proposed system by conducting a thorough empirical study. The results indicate that the proposed system enables real-time video streaming while maintaining a consistent visual quality by dynamically reconfiguring videocoding parameters according to the link quality.
