This thesis introduces the floating capacitance transducer for crude oil multi-phase flow and analyses the reconstruction algorithm. Analysis shows the structure of the floating array capacitance transducer can provide higher signal amplitude and more uniformity of sensitivity. The iterative schemes can reduce the distortions produced by the Linear Back Projection image reconstruction algorithm.

An Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) system include its sensor, measuring circuit and image reconstruction algorithm is described in this paper. An AC-based capacitance circuit is introduced because it is stray-immune and small capacitance can be measured. The 3-D image is reconstructed from a set of 2-D images which are reconstructed from an optimization iterative reconstruction algorithm. The 3D ECT instrument is used to observe distribution of discrete phase of two-phase flow in closed pipe. The preliminary experimental results demonstrate the distribution of discrete phase of two-phase flow is observed easily. The ECT system has advantage as regards two-phase flow visual monitoring.

Compressed Sensing (CS) can use the sparseness of a target to obtain its image with much less data than that defined by the Nyquist sampling theorem. In this paper, we study the hardware implementation of a block compression sensing system and its reconstruction algorithms. Different block sizes are used. Two algorithms, the orthogonal matching algorithm (OMP) and the full variation minimum algorithm (TV) are used to obtain good reconstructions. The influence of block size on reconstruction is also discussed.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) uses current and voltage measurements made on the boundary of a body to compute the conductivity distribution within the body. The present reconstruction algorithm using sensitivity matrix images the complex conductivity distribution due to the permittivity distribution inside the body. A finite element model (FEM) with mesh refinement is used to solve the forward problem in order to improve image resolution. Computer simulations showed that the full information contained in the complex tissue conductivity (real and imaginary components) could be obtained by this method. Copyright (C) 2003 IFAC.

Inspired by the data fusion principle, we proposed a genetic approach to fusion of algorithms for CS to improve reconstruction performance. Firstly, several compressive sensing reconstruction algorithms (CSRAs) are executed in parallel to provide their estimates of the underlying sparse signal. Next, genetic algorithm is used to fuse these estimates for achieving a new estimate that is better than the best of these estimates. The proposed approach provides flexible design of fitness function and mutation strategy of genetic algorithm, and various participating CSRAs can be used to recover the sparse signal. Experiments were conducted on both synthetic and real world signals. Results indicate that the proposed approach has three advantages: (1) it performs well even when the dimension of measurements is very low, (2) reconstruction performance is better than any participating CSRAs, and (3) it is comparable or even superior to other fusion algorithm like FACS.

Tomographic Gamma Scanning (TGS) method is one of the most advanced non-destructive assay (NDA) methods. But for measuring heterogeneously distributed media with medium- and high-density, there are still three main problems: experiment's method of the calibration of detection efficiency of TGS is more difficult and complicated because of large voxels, "point-to-point" model and average model can't calculate high-density samples accurately in transmission image reconstruction and computational cost is very large for correction factor in emission image. Calibration of detection efficiency using Monte Carlo method shorten calibration cycle greatly, a new Monte Carlo statistical iteration in TGS transmission image reconstruction method which is based on MC calculation and Numerical Analysis is presented, give a chance for measuring high-density samples;the division method and pre-calculation method in reconstructing TGS emission image is used which saves a great lot of computation time and provide a fast reconstruction algorithm for emission image. Above methods apply to TGS experiment device, the relative errors between experiment and MC calibration were less 5%;the relative errors between reconstructed values and the reference values were less than 4% in transmission image;the corrected experimental results were compared to the standard values and the relative deviation was found to be 7%. It took no more than one hour to complete the reconstruction of TGS emission image for a sample model with 3x3x3 voxels using a 2.0G computer.

Solving the Two Color Problem: An Heuristic algorithm

The 2-color problem in discrete tomography requires to construct a 2-colored matrix consistent with a given set of projections representing the number of elements of each color in each one of its rows and columns. In this paper, we describe an heuristic algorithm to find a solution of the 2-color problem, that has been recently proved to be NP-complete. The algorithm starts by computing a solution where elements of different colors may overlap, and then it proceeds in searching for switches that leave unaltered the projections but remove the overlaps. Experimental results show that this heuristic approach finds a solution in a short computational time to almost all the randomly generated 2-color instances, and it provides for the remaining ones a high quality approximation.

Due to growing cities, the real-time knowledge about the state of traffic is a critical problem for urban mobility and the road-segments traffic densities estimation influences the efficiency of fundamental smart city services as smart routing, smart planning for evacuations, planning of civil works on the city, etc. Nevertheless, the traffic-related data from navigator Apps (e.g., TomTom, Google, Bing) are too expensive to be acquired. Also, the traditional sensors for the traffic flow detection are very expensive, and they are usually not dense enough for a correct traffic monitoring. In order to overcome such problems, there is a space for low cost and fast solutions for dense traffic flow reconstruction. We propose a real-time visual self-adaptive solution to reconstruct the traffic density at every location of a wide urban area leveraging the detections from a few fixed traffic sensors deployed within the area of interest. A such method is based on fluid dynamic models to simulate macroscopic phenomena as shocks formation and propagation of waves backwards along roads. Such physical constraints are applied to a detailed street graph which is enriched by specific parameters representing a weight in terms of traffic road capacity. The weight's assignment has been estimated by a stochastic learning approach at each time slot of the day. The accuracy of the proposed model comes from the error between the reconstructed traffic density and the measured values at the sensor position by excluding each sensor iteratively and reconstructing the flow without it. The proposed reconstruction model has been created by exploiting open and real-time data in the context of Sii-Mobility research project by using Km4City infrastructure in the area of Florence, Italy, for its corresponding Smart City solution.

In this paper, we describe a novel CS method that incorporates dispersion compensation into the CS reconstruction of spectral domain OCT (SD OCT) signal. We show that A-scans with dispersion compensation can be obtained by multiplying the dispersion correcting term to the undersampled linear-in-wavenumber spectral data before the CS reconstruction. We also implemented fast CS reconstruction by taking the advantage of fast Fourier transform (FFT). The matrix-vector multiplication commonly used in the CS reconstruction is implemented by a two-step procedure. Compared to the CS reconstruction with matrix multiplication, our method can obtain dispersion compensated A-scan at least 5 times faster. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve high quality image with dispersion compensation.

Inverse Finite Element Method for reconstruction of Deformation in the Gantry Structure of Heavy-Duty Machine Tool Using FBG Sensors

The deformation of the gantry structure in heavy-duty machine tools is an important factor that affects machining accuracy. In order to realize real-time monitoring of the deformation of the gantry structure, which is statically indeterminate and complex in shape, the reconstruction algorithm based on inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM) is proposed and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are used to measure strain data. The elements of the gantry structure are divided and the displacement functions of each element are determined. The shape function is obtained by substituting degree of freedoms (DOF) of element nodes into displacement functions. Through a differential method, the relation between strain and DOF of element nodes is established by the strain matrices. Subsequently, the DOF of element nodes are obtained by minimizing an error functional defined as the least-squares error between the analytic strain data and the corresponding experimental strains. Considering coordinate transformation and problem-specific displacement boundary conditions, the total deformation of the gantry structure is obtained. Following this, the experiment was carried out. The deformation simulated by ANSYS was used to replace the experimentally measured deformation and then compared with the deformation reconstructed by iFEM under the same loading condition. The accuracy of iFEM for reconstructing deformation of the gantry structure in heavy-duty machine tools is verified. It provides a new view for improving the machining precision of heavy-duty machine tools.
