This paper gives the first study of the application of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) resonators for the characterisation of printed circuit board materials. Simple theoretical considerations for dielectric characterisation with rectangular and circular SIW resonators are given. Both rectangular and circular cavities with different type of coupling have been manufactured and measured in order to characterise low and high permittivity substrates. The retrieved substrate parameters are in agreement with the values specified by the substrate manufacturers.

The wideband absorbance of the absorber has been realized by modifying geometrical shape of conventional rectangular patch in single periodic cell. The increase of relative bandwidth of this new absorptive cell structure with E-shaped patch can reach and exceed 100% with respect to the centre frequency comparing with rectangular patch. The new structure of absorber exciting a new broadband resonant modes results in the bandwidth expanding. The work presented here provides an efficient method to decrease the number of elements and layers of multi-layer metamaterial absorber compared to conventional element structures used previously. A dual-band antenna is designed based on 2.45GHz coaxial-fed microstrip antenna by loading U-slot and H-slot in the rectangular patch. Meanwhile, the frequencies can be controlled through changing the position of U-slot and H-slot. The frequency (bandwidth) of antenna meeting S_(11)<-10dB requirements is the 2.45GHz (2.42-2.48GHz) and 1.85GHz (1.835-1.865GHz). It can be used in China Unicom GSM1800. Measured results are in good agreement with the simulation.

Using the PSGRN/PSCMP software and the fault model offered by USGS and on the basis of finite rectangular dislocation theory and the local layered wave velocity structures of the crust-upper-mantle, the influences of crustal layering and thickness on co-seismic gravity changes and deformation of Wenchuan earthquake have been simulated. The results indicate that: the influences have a relationship with the attitude of faults and the relative position between calculated points and fault. The difference distribution form of simulated results between the two models is similar to that of co-seismic effect. For the per centum distribution, it' s restricted by the zero line of the co-seismic effects obviously. Its positive is far away from the zero line. For the crustal thickness, the effect is about 10% -20%. The negative and the effect over 30% focus around the zero line. The average influences of crustal layering and thickness for the E-W displacement, N-S displacement, vertical displacement and gravity changes are 18.4%, 18.0%, 15.8 % and 16. 2 % respectively, When the crustal thickness is 40 km, they are 4. 6% ,5.3% ,3.8% and 3.8%. Then the crustal thickness is 70 km, the average influences are 3.5%, 4. 6% ,3.0% and 2. 5% respectively.
