We present an improved adaptive genetic algorithm for rectangular layout in stone cutting process. Firstly, the mathematical model for stone layout is proposed and established. Secondly, a heuristic algorithm based on the area size and the length-width ratio is employed to initialize the population. Thirdly, in order to define the fitness function, we take into consideration three important ingredients: the layout length, layout center of gravity and layout uniformity. Then an adaptive strategy on crossover probability and mutation probability is presented based on the distribution of population fitness values. The adaptive strategy can help the algorithm avoid achieving a premature convergence of local optimal solution. Finally, actual project results on production data show consistent improvements in the utilization ratio of stones compared with traditional method.

Inspired by the traditional notched planar reciprocal frame (RF) that uses short elements to build load-bearing structures with a span longer than individual elements, we search for an innovative way of using salvaged timber for building RFs specifically connected with wooden nails. A planar rectangular slide-in RF system is proposed as a possible solution for salvaging timber in new applications and therefore also for minimising timber waste. The paper explores the potential of the proposed slide-in system considering aspects related to structure, architecture, fabrication, and assembly. Experimental and analytical investigations were carried out to understand the structural behaviour of the individual elements as well as the entire system. The feasibility of assembling was explored, and the resulting patterns and architectural spaces were illustrated. Based on the structural and architectural explorations, two design cases were physically realised. The benefits and limits are analysed, where the low-tech concept, the flexibility in layout, the predictivity of load-bearing capacity, and the ability of disassembly are highlighted, together with its limitations in load-bearing capacity and ductility.

This model is based on the problem B in the Mathematical Modeling Contest of North China Electronic Power University in 2015. It works out solutions for non-overlapping box arrangement with load-bearing limits and without bearing limits, which can finally solve the practical loading problem of overlapping of multi-type boxes considering bearing limits. About the mentioned practical problem, it is actually a two-dimensional layout problem. In this paper, models for integer layout in unified direction are established by integer programming. First, select an area-undetermined rectangle in the lower-left corner of the pallet and pack boxes X in it in unified direction. Then divide the residual area into two pars, B and C, and pack boxes Y in each part in unified direction. The layout of the residual area is concerned with the size of the lower-left corner. To reduce discussions, the maximum area utilization of B and C is set as constraint which will be considered comprehensively, the minimum of the whole oddments of three areas be set as objective function, thus four layout methods can be obtained. Then exchange the box types in the selected rectangle and the residual area, there comes another four layout methods. By analyzing the packing and division methods of the eight layout, the optimal solution can be concluded.

A rectangular layout is a partition of a rectangle into a finite set of interior-disjoint rectangles. These layouts are used as rectangular cartograms in cartography, as floorplans in building architecture and VLSI design, and as graph drawings. Often areas are associated with the rectangles of a rectangular layout and it is desirable for one rectangular layout to represent several area assignments. A layout is area-universal if any assignment of areas to rectangles can be realized by a combinatorially equivalent rectangular layout. We identify a simple necessary and sufficient condition for a rectangular layout to be area-universal: a rectangular layout is area-universal if and only if it is one-sided. We also investigate similar questions for perimeter assignments. The adjacency requirements for the rectangles of a rectangular layout can be specified in various ways, most commonly via the dual graph of the layout. We show how to find an area-universal layout for a given set of adjacency requirements whenever such a layout exists. Furthermore we show how to impose restrictions on the orientations of edges and junctions of the rectangular layout. Such an orientation-constrained layout, if it exists, may be constructed in polynomial time, and all orientation-constrained layouts may be listed in polynomial time per layout.

This paper deals with the problem, arising in practice, of drawing a directed graph as a collection of disjoint, isothetic rectangles, where the rectangles of the nodes of each edge must touch and where the placement of the rectangles respects the ordering of the edges. It provides characterizations for those graphs having the special type of rectangular layout known as a rectangular dual. It then characterizes the st-graphs having rectangular layouts in terms of the existence of certain planar embeddings and the non-existence of a particular subgraph.

A rectangular cartogram is a type of map where every region is a rectangle. The size of the rectangles is chosen such that their areas represent a geographic variable (e.g., population). Good rectangular cartograms are hard to generate: The area specifications for each rectangle may make it impossible to realize correct adjacencies between the regions and so hamper the intuitive understanding of the map. We present the first algorithms for rectangular cartogram construction. Our algorithms depend on a precise formalization of region adjacencies and build upon existing VLSI layout algorithms. Furthermore, we characterize a non-trivial class of rectangular subdivisions for which exact cartograms can be computed efficiently. An implementation of our algorithms and various tests show that in practice, visually pleasing rectangular cartograms with small cartographic error can be generated effectively. This paper proposes the two‐dimensional (2‐D) cutting‐stock algorithm based on the local optimization. First, it is intended to eliminate the combinational process for the rectangular parts in the traditional system. The search operation is defined as the one‐to‐one mapping of the rectangular parts to the partial rectangular regions generated by the divide operation. A stack is used to store the data for the partial rectangular regions, and the merge operation is introduced as a new concept of operation in the stack. The algorithm is constructed recursively using the following four operations, i.e., search, divide, merge, and stack. Through an application example, it is verified that the proposed algorithm can realize nearly the same layout efficiency as the traditional method by the dynamic programming.
