Analysis of longitudinal deformation of existing rectangular pipe jacking tunnel caused by shield tunnel undercrossing

The existing rectangular pipe jacking tunnel is prone to deform after the construction of the new nearby shield tunnel, resulting in longitudinal uneven settlement, water leakage, and other ailments that could jeopardize the structure's safety. The safety of the existing rectangular pipe jacking tunnel is in jeopardy in order to prevent the excessive deformation of the tunnel following the construction of the new shield tunnel. This paper proposes the foundation stiffness function model and SP-T model to describe the settlement curve of the new shield tunnel to the existing rectangular pipe jacking tunnel using the first phase project of Hohhot Rail Transit Line 2 in Inner Mongolia as an example. The model is more coincidental than the original Pasternak-Timoshenko model considering the distribution in soil caused by the excavation of a new tunnel because it takes into account the change in foundation stiffness based on the Pasternak foundation. The findings demonstrate the consistency between the field data results and the prediction results derived from the analysis method presented in this paper. The further parametric study examined some influences on the construction of a new shield tunnel that affects already-existing pipe jacking tunnels. These studies include equivalent longitudinal bending and shear stiffness, as well as the location and angle of the new tunnel in relation to the existing rectangular pipe jacking tunnel. In addition to highlighting the impact of equivalent shear stiffness on the existing rectangular pipe jacking tunnel, the impact of equivalent longitudinal bending stiffness and equivalent longitudinal shear stiffness on settlement is discussed in the article. This paper's research methodology can not only forecast the new shield tunnel's longitudinal settlement deformation beneath the existing rectangular pipe jacking tunnel, but it can also generate fresh concepts for investigating related issues.

A simplified method for evaluating the carrying-soil phenomenon in large cross-section rectangular pipe jacking

During the large cross-section rectangular pipe jacking, the soil within a certain range above the jacking pipe is prone to move along with the pipe jacking machine and jacking pipe under various effects generated by the jacking construction, known as the carrying-soil phenomenon. However, there is currently a lack of evaluation methods to quantitatively analyse this phenomenon. Thus this paper proposes a semi-analytical evaluation method for the carrying-soil phenomenon in large cross-section rectangular pipe jacking. This method considers the soil disturbance caused by the joint effect of the added thrust, the friction force, the grouting pressure, and the over excavation of soil generated during the jacking process through the applications of the Mindlin solution and stochastic medium theory, which allows for a quantitative analysis of the yielding range of the surrounding soil around the pipe jacking and hence a quantitative evaluation of the carrying-soil phenomenon. This method is also well validated by comparing its simulated results with measured ones. Based on the proposed method, the influential factor analysis of carrying-soil phenomenon in large cross-section rectangular pipe jacking is also carried out. It is found that increasing the buried depth, reducing the excavation width, maintaining appropriate grouting pressure, and minimizing ground loss and friction forces can effectively control the carrying-soil phenomenon.

In this study, the rectangular pipe-jacking tunnel project of the Liuye Avenue West Extension under the Changzhang Highway is used to study highway pavement settlement and deformation during pipe-jacking construction through on-site monitoring. A three-dimensional numerical simulation method is employed to analyse the factors contributing to the significant settlement and rebound of the pavement. This study identifies the fundamental law governing the development of pavement settlement over time. The findings indicate that settlement increases rapidly when the jacking distance reaches approximately 10 m and then stabilizes at a consistent growth level. Furthermore, completion of the jacking of the left pipe leads to a transition in the surface settlement groove from a "V"-type distribution to a "W"-type distribution. Comparative analysis reveals that horizontal and vertical displacements exhibit similar characteristics, with maximum displacements occurring in the lagging jacking area. On both sides of the axis, the settlement groove curve remains stable within a range of 30-40 m, while the horizontal displacement curve stabilizes within a range of 20-30 m.

Case Study on the Interaction Between rectangular pipe jacking Control and Ground Settlement in Silty Clay

A soil pressure balance rectangular pipe jacking project is investigated to find out the interaction of jacking control and ground settlement in Zhengzhou, China. The dimension of the rectangular pipe jacking excavation face is 6.94 m (width) x 4.24 m (height). The tunnel is 35.6 m long and 10.6 m beneath the ground in silty clay strata. The trajectory of the pipe jacking tunneling machine was measured during the whole construction. Meanwhile the construction sets like cutter pressure, jacking force, and grouting pressure were measured with sensors on the pipe jacking machine. The ground settlement was obtained throughout the rectangular pipe jacking process. The results showed that ground settlement variation started from 7.46 m in front of the cutter and ended with 9.79 m away from cutter. The ground settlement can be divided into four phases according to the settlement increasing pattern which is consistent with the distance from the cutter. The ratio of these four phases settlement is approximately 3:3:2:2. The trajectory of the jacking pipe tail has a nonnegligible effect on the settlement distribution characteristics of the ground. The vertical trajectory variation induces lager settlement increasing than horizontal trajectory. Ground settlement increases during the whole progress, but the increasing amplitude decreases with the increasing of cutter pressure, jacking force and grouting.

Bending Performance of F-Type Socket Joints for rectangular pipe jacking Tunnels with Longitudinal Connectors

Joints are the weakest part of rectangular pipe jacking tunnels, and the structural form of the joint is closely related to its bending resistance. In this work, the F-type socket joint of a rectangular pipe jacking tunnel is selected as the object of study. The bending mechanical properties of the joints connected by steel screws and those connected by bent bolts are compared via a three-point bending test. The results show that the two longitudinal connection joints have similar bending stiffnesses. Compared with the bent bolt connection joint, the steel screw connection joint has better toughness, and the load at which the joint enters the plastic stage and the bearing capacity are increased by 0.47 times and 1.02 times, respectively. The failure modes of the joints connected by steel screw connections and those connected by bent bolts are crushing of the concrete of the top plate and cracking of the concrete above the screw holes, respectively. When a bent bolt connection is used, the reinforcement at the screw hole should be locally strengthened, or ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) should be used at the screw hole to improve the load-bearing capacity of the joint.

Mathematical modelling for strata deformation caused by rectangular pipe jacking construction in composite layered ground

In this study, analytical solutions of vertical deformation of ground surface and horizontal displacement of strata are derived combining the Mindlin solution and the mirror method due to rectangular pipe jacking tunneling in composite strata, which considers the combined effect of five factors of additional excavation pressure, friction of rectangular pipe jacking and soils, segment-soil friction, grouting filling and strata loss, respectively. The theoretical calculation results were verified against the measured data in two project cases. Moreover, effect factors of rectangular jacking pipe cross-sectional dimensions, embedment of tunnel axial depth, elasticity modulus on the interlayer and the Poisson's ratio of the interlayer on strata deformation is investigated. The results imply that the theoretical calculation values obtained using this method are more closely correlated with the observed values compared to those computed using the single stratum model. The primary cause of terrene upheaval in front of the working surface is the increased excavation pressure on the working face and the horizontal displacement of the deep soils and the surface subsidence behind the excavation face is resulting from the soil loss as the main influencing factor. The varying cross-section size of pipe jacking is able to impact on the vertical deformation of the soil, but it has a limited impact on the lateral displacement of the strata. The affection of the buried depth of the tunnel axis on strata deformation is more notable in the rectangular pipe jacking construction. As the axial tunnel depth growth, the ground surface maximum subsidence value gradually decreases, while the crest value of horizontal distortion mildly increases. When the rise of the interlayered modulus of elasticity, the maximum earth surface subsidence enlarged gradually while the subsidence trough slight diminution. During the construction of the underground space of the rectangular pipe jacking with a large section, a large amount of soil below is lost, which cannot be ignored to the surrounding soil Sedimentation occurs depending on the disturbance. Now, depending on a large cross-section rectangular pipe jacking project in Suzhou, the lateral settlement of the monitoring section is predicted through the peck formula and the random medium theory respectively, and the comparative analysis shows that the modified peck formula is more consistent with the measured value;The daily settlement data of the monitoring section are analyzed and compared to verify that the mud slurry injection during construction has a significant control effect on the formation settlement.

To study the distribution characteristics and variation rules of ground subsidence. The influence law of overburden thickness is studied by 3D numerical simulation. The cumulative sedimentation of the ground decreases linearly with the increase of the thickness of the casing in the range of 0.5 times the width of the central axis of the large pipe tunnel. The cumulative settlement of the ground increases with the thickness of the casing. The thickness of the casing on both sides of the central axis of the small pipe tunnel, the superposition disturbance of the large and small pipe jackers is significantly. (C) 2020 The Authors. Surface Settlement Prediction of rectangular pipe-jacking Tunnel Based on the Machine-Learning Algorithm

The construction disturbance mechanism of rectangular pipe-jacking tunnels is more intricate than that of circular tunnels, leading to potential issues such as excessive accumulation and deformation of the surrounding formation, which can result in engineering disasters. However, there is currently a lack of reliable methods for predicting these disturbances. Machine-learning techniques have the capability to analyze the influence of multiple independent variables on a dependent variable, offering a new approach for predicting surface settlement in the construction of rectangular pipe-jacking tunnels. To address the sensitivity of existing machine-learning models to initial parameters, an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) method is employed. This method incorporates an adaptive mutation technique, adaptive inertia weight, and postoptimization method for mutant particles to enhance the particle size and determine the probability of obtaining the optimal value. By leveraging the strong mapping and nonlinear fitting abilities of the backpropagation (BP) algorithm, the IPSO-BP algorithm model is developed and compared with the BP, support vector machine, and random forest (RF) models using actual monitoring data. The findings indicate that in the presence of specific noise in the surface settlement data, the IPSO-BP prediction model demonstrates an enhanced accuracy of 26%, 25%, and 10% for the left amplitude. This approach can serve as a valuable reference for settlement prediction in similar projects. (c) 2023 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Frictional analysis of pipe-slurry-soil interaction and jacking force prediction of rectangular pipe jacking

Predictive model and formula of jacking force has been well-established for circular pipe jacking in the past decades. However, the frictional mechanism of pipe-soil-slurry and jacking force prediction of rectangular pipe jacking has not well been understood. Nowadays, the rectangular pipe jacking is widely used, because of its over 20% larger effective usable area than that of circular pipe as underground facilities, with the same cross-sectional area. Nevertheless, the corresponding prediction models of thrust of rectangular pipe jacking are lacking. In order to further understand the frictional mechanism of slurry rectangular pipe jacking, five classical analytical calculation models have been proposed, considering the pipe-soil-slurry interaction, and prediction formulas are obtained. Then, 3D finite difference method was introduced to estimate the jacking force by using FLAC3D. Finally, three case studies have been carried out to validate the proposed models. The results show that the numerical and theoretical results have good consistency, and what is more, the measured jacking force can be well included within the ranges of analytical models presented in this paper, which can improve the thrust prediction of rectangular pipe jacking.
