In this work we present a millimeter wave orthomode transducer (OMT) based on a simple structure. The OMT, with a square waveguide input (5.69 × 5.69 mm 2 ) and two single-mode waveguide outputs: a standard WR 22 waveguide (5.69×2.845 mm 2 ), has no iris, no pins and no coupling structure. From 34 to 40.5 GHz the measured transmission is ≈-2 dB, the reflection coefficient of each port is less than -10 dB, the cross polarization is less than -29 dB for both polarizations. Analysis in this article will bring some methods to improve the OMT performance based on our structure.

Ridge waveguide divider junctions are introduced and applied to wide-band multiplexer applications. A rigorous analysis and optimization process by mode matching method (MMM) is employed to design the junctions that yield low reflection coefficient in common port and almost equal transmission coefficients in the other two ports over a wide frequency band. Two design examples of wide-band diplexer and triplexer using such junctions are presented. All the components involved in the diplexer/triplexer designs are rigorously modeled and cascaded by MMM. Optimization procedures by MMM are also applied in these two designs to improve the performance. The use of combined transmit/receive antennas on spacecraft can reduce the mass by a considerable amount. Such a configuration normally requires the diplexing of the receive and transmit bands onto a common feed. Due to the difference in power levels, problems can arise if passive intermodulation (PIM) products from the transmit carriers fall within the receive band at power levels of the same order as the receive carriers. The design and performance of a low-PIM diplexer is described. It is shown that a transmission line model may be used for the precise design of rectangular waveguide manifold diplexers which maintain the Chebyshev transfer function properties of the low-pass prototype. The use of mode matching in the final stages of realisation allows the unit to be constructed in two halves and the performance maintained without the need for tuning screws. By reducing the number of metal to metal contacts lower PIM levels can be achieved. It is shown that for two 100 W carriers input to the transmit port, the 3rd Order APIM level is lower than -140 dBm, i.e. -190 dBC, over a temperature range of -40 deg C to +120 deg C. The variation of PIM level with both power and PIM order is presented.< >

A layer of dielectric substrate is employed as a matching structure between the waveguide and microstrip line structure, which is optimised using the direct search method. AMCs, EBGs and other surface-based metamaterials are known to have narrow bandwidths. However, when they are used to generate stopbands for parallel-plate modes, the bandwidth can be very large. This characteristic is used in the gap waveguide technology that was invented in 2008, based on old research on soft and hard surfaces. The gap waveguide technology can be used to package microstrip and CPW circuits, but can also with advantage replace such standard technologies and in particular above 30 GHz. The gap waveguides can have similar lowloss performance as solid rectangular waveguides, but they can be realized in a much better way. rectangular waveguides are normally realized by split blocks which are screwed tightly together to ensure good conductive contact, whereas gap waveguides can be realized between parallel plates without metal connection. This paper overviews how the gap waveguide technology has been explored during the passed five years including: demonstrations of the wideband lowloss guiding characteristics up to 260 GHz, demonstrations of packaging in different frequency ranges with different AMCs or EBGs, and demonstrations of filters, transitions, MMIC packaging, corporate distribution networks, and slot and horn array antennas. The technology demonstrators cover the three different versions of gap waveguides: groove gap waveguide, ridge gap waveguides and microstrip gap waveguides.

This paper presented a miniaturization rectangular waveguide which much smaller than hallow rectangular waveguide (HRWG) having same cutoff frequency of dominant mode and a large bandwidth of single dominant mode working (BWSMW) by inserting a suspended dielectric layer which partly covered a metal grounded plane. The numerical simulating shows that the cutoff frequency of dominant mode descended, while the first high order mode's cutoff frequency changed slowly when the relative permittivity of the dielectric layer increases. The transverse section sizes of the presented waveguide is less than half of the HRWG with same cutoff frequency of dominant mode and much larger BWSMW which is 1.9 times of the ones of HRWG is observed in the studied case.

For the purpose of realizing compact plane-wave antenna measurements, a planar array antenna made of 45 rectangular waveguides is fabricated for small antenna pattern measurements. The center frequency designed for the antenna is 12 GHz. As a result of the horn antenna pattern measurement, fairly good agreement between the outdoor data and that in the fabricated situation is obtained.
