State of health estimation for lithium-ion batteries based on recurrence plot analysis using charging voltage curves

Accurate state of health (SOH) estimation is crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in various applications. Traditional SOH estimators often require complex models, strict test profiles (e.g., low cycling rates), or extensive training data, limiting their applications. Hence, this study introduces a novel data-driven method that integrates recurrence plot (RP) analysis for direct SOH estimation using a simple regression model trained on a single battery. The method begins by transforming voltage data from charging cycles into RP images, which serve as a basis for extracting significant features associated with LIB degradation. These features, termed features-of-interest (FOIs), are then thoroughly analyzed to establish their correlation with the aging status of LIBs. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed RP-derived FOIs align closely with those obtained from differential voltage analysis (DVA) using open circuit voltage (OCV) data, even under high charging rates. This alignment underscores the effectiveness of the FOIs as reliable indicators of SOH. Moreover, SOH estimations conducted on battery aging datasets reveals that RP-derived FOIs from a single LIB can accurately estimate the SOH of all remaining LIBs through a simple regression model, reducing the need for extensive training data and computational resources.

Using recurrence plot analysis to distinguish between endogenous and exogenous stock market crashes

recurrence plots are graphical tools based on Phase Space Reconstruction. recurrence Quantification analysis (RQA) is a statistical quantification of RPs. RP and RQA are good at working with non-stationarity and noisy data, in detecting changes in data behavior, in particular in detecting breaks, like a phase transition and in informing about other dynamic properties of a time series. Endogenous Stock Market Crashes have been modeled as phase changes in recent times. Motivated by this, we have used RP and RQA techniques for detecting critical regimes preceding an endogenous crash seen as a phase transition and hence give an estimation of the initial bubble time. We have used a new method for computing RQA measures with confidence intervals. We have also used the techniques on a known exogenous crash to see if the RP reveals a different story or not. The analysis is made on Nifty, Hong Kong AOI and Dow Jones Industrial Average, taken over a time span of about 3 years for the endogenous crashes. Then the RPs of all time series have been observed, compared and discussed. All the time series have been first transformed into the classical momentum divided by the maximum Xmax of the time series over the time window which is considered in the specific analysis. RPs have been plotted for each time series, and RQA variables have been computed on different epochs. Our studies reveal that, in the case of an endogenous crash, we have been able to identify the bubble, while in the case of exogenous crashes the plots do not show any such pattern, thus helping us in identifying such crashes. Polymer materials that are used in outdoor enviroments are exposed to humidity and polution. In addition, some insulation materials installed in water or embeded to slush containing serious pollutants for a long time. These conditions adversely affect the dielectric properties of insulating materials. In this study, the prepared unsaturated polyester (UPE) samples are stored in an ionized water solution for 8, 24, and 168 hours. This ionized water solution is considered to represent the polluted water in the outdoor environments. Further, the dielectric behaviors of the prepared polyester samples are investigated using the inclined plane test (IPT) method, whereas the leakage current data that are recorded during the experiment are analyzed using the recurrence plot (RP) method. The results of applying the inclined plane test on the unsaturated polyester samples depict that the lifetime of the samples decreased with an increase in the period of storage in the ionized water solution. Further, the results of the recurrence plot analysis reveal that the recurrence plot point density also depicted a decrease with an increase in the period of storage in the ionized water solution.

We propose and demonstrate the use of cross recurrence plot analysis (CRPA) to accurately determine the Brillouin shift due to strain and temperature in a Brillouin distributed fiber sensor. This signal processing technique, which is implemented in Brillouin sensors for the first time relies on apriori data i.e, the lineshape of the Brillouin gain spectrum and its similarity with the spectral features measured at different locations along the fiber. Analytical and experimental investigation of the proposed scheme is presented in this paper.

Introduction: Aortic valve disease (AVD) is an inflammatory, lipid infiltration and calcification disease that has been associated with changes in the conventional linear heart rate variability (HRV) indices showing a marked shift towards sympathetic predominance and a deterioration of the autonomic control. Objective: To explore the HRV dynamics in AVD patients through nonlinear methods by recurrence quantification analysis (RQA). Methods: In total, 127 subjects participated in a cross-sectional study categorized into three groups: healthy valve (HV), aortic valve sclerosis (AVSc), and aortic valve stenosis (AVS), as determined by echocardiographic assessment. HRV data were collected from five-minute ECG recordings at both a supine position and active standing. RQA indices were calculated using the Cross recurrence plot Toolbox. Results: In the supine position, patients with AVS exhibited larger determinism and trapping time than those with AVSc and HV. The analysis of these differences revealed that determinism and laminarity increased progressively from HV to AVS. In the same way, the magnitude of change (Delta) between positions decreased and presented the lowest values in AVS in most of the nonlinear indices. Conclusion: RQA indices of HRV in AVD patients indicate a rigidizing dynamic characterized by larger determinism and extended trapping times in fewer system states in relation to the severity of AVD. These findings establish a precedent for future perspective assessments for the implementation of these methods in medical software or devices.

Complex machine dynamics, as caused by friction-induced vibrations and related to brake squeal, have gained significant attention in research and industry for decades. Today, remedies heavily rely on experimental testing due to the low prediction quality of numerical models. However, there is considerable lack of in-depth studies in characterizing self-excited oscillations encoded in scalar measurements. We complement previous works on phase-space reconstruction and recurrence plots analysis to a larger data base by applying a novel systematic approach using a large data base. This framework considers appropriate delay embedding, time series partitioning into squealing and non-squealing parts and comparison to operational parameters of the brake system. By means of recurrence plot analysis, we illustrate that friction-excited vibrations are multi-scale in nature. Results confirm the existence of low-dimensional attractors in squealing regimes with increasing values of determinism and periodicity with rising vibration levels. It is shown that the squeal propensity can be directly linked to recurrence quantification measures. Using determinism and the clustering coefficient as metrics, we show for the first time that is possible to predict instabilities in regions of non-squealing conditions.

Nonlinear surface EMG analysis to detect changes of motor unit conduction velocity and synchronization

Amplitude and frequency content of the surface electromyographic (EMG) signal reflect central and peripheral modifications of the neuromuscular system. Classic surface EMG spectral variables applied to assess muscle functions are the centroid and median power spectral frequencies. More recently, nonlinear tools have been introduced to analyze the surface EMG;among them, the recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) was shown to be particularly promising for the detection of muscle status changes. The purpose of this work was to analyze the effect of motor unit short-term synchronization and conduction velocity (CV) on EMG spectral variables and two variables extracted by RQA, the percentage of recurrence (% Rec) and determinism (% Det). The study was performed on the basis of a simulation model, which allowed changing the degree of synchronization and mean CV of a number of motor units, and of an experimental investigation of the surface EMG signal properties detected during high-force-level isometric fatiguing contractions of the biceps brachii muscle. Simulations and experimental results were largely in agreement and show that 1) spectral variables, %Rec, and %Det are influenced by CV and degree of synchronization;2) spectral variables are highly correlated with %Det (R = -0.95 in the simulations and -0.78 and -0.75 for the initial values and normalized slopes, respectively, in the experimental signals), and thus the information they provide on muscle properties is basically the same;and 3) variations of %Det and %Rec in response to changes in muscle properties are significantly larger than the variations of spectral variables. This study validates RQA as a means for fatigue assessment with potential advantages (such as the higher sensitivity to changes of muscle status) with respect to the classic spectral analysis.

The underwater phenomena characterization is an important task for the surveillance and monitoring of underwater environment in a non-intrusive manner. The acoustic methods have been proved to be very powerful for the detection and localization of underwater objects, but also for the characterization of various transient phenomena. This paper proposes a new method for object imaging based on an acoustic system that uses multiple elements. The image is obtained using two main principles: the time-spectral diversity and the spatial diversity of the acoustic system.

Statistical signal processing is one of the most important tasks in a large amount of areas of scientific studies, such as astrophysics, geophysics, and space physics. Phase recurrence analysis and long-range persistence are the two dynamical structures of the underlying processes for the given natural phenomenon. Linear and nonlinear time series analysis approaches (cross-correlation analysis, cross-recurrence plot, wavelet coherent transform, and Hurst analysis) are combined to investigate the relative phase interconnection and long-range correlation between solar activity and geomagnetic activity for the time interval from 1932 January to 2017 January. The following prominent results are found: (1) geomagnetic activity lags behind sunspot numbers with a phase shift of 21 months, and they have a high level of asynchronous behavior;(2) their relative phase interconnections are in phase for the periodic scales during 8-16 years, but have a mixing behavior for the periodic belts below 8 years;(3) both sunspot numbers and geomagnetic activity can not be regarded as a stochastic phenomenon because their dynamical behaviors display a long-term correlation and a fractal nature. We believe that the presented conclusions could provide further information on understanding the dynamical coupling of solar dynamo process with geomagnetic activity variation, and the crucial role of solar and geomagnetic activity in the long-term climate change.

In nonlinear dynamical systems the determination of stable and unstable periodic orbits as part of phase space prediction is problematic in particular if perturbed by noise. Fourier spectra of the time series or its autocorrelation function have shown to be of little use if the dynamic process is not strictly wide-sense stationary or if it is nonlinear. To locate unstable periodic orbits of a chaotic attractor in phase space the least stable eigenvalue can be determined by approximating locally the trajectory via linearisation. This approximation can be achieved by employing a Gaussian kernel estimator and minimising the summed up distances of the measured time series i.e. its estimated trajectory (e.g. via Levenberg-Marquardt). Noise poses a significant problem here. The application of the Wiener-Khinchin theorem to the time series in combination with recurrence plots, i.e. the Fourier transform of the recurrence times or rates, has been shown capable of detecting higher order dynamics (period-2 or period-3 orbits), which can fail using classical FouRiER-based methods. However little is known about its parameter sensitivity, e.g. with respect to the time delay, the embedding dimension or perturbations. Here we provide preliminary results on the application of the recurrence time spectrum by analysing the Henon and the Rossler attractor. Results indicate that the combination of recurrence time spectra with a nonlinearly filtered plot of return times is able to estimate the unstable periodic orbits. Owing to the use of recurrence plot based measures the analysis is more robust against noise than the conventional Fourier transform. (c) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
